Depression following H1N1

Post by Carol Orr »

A friend of mine has a sister who is medical assistant. The sister and her
whole family had the h1n1 flu(in Iowa). The sister said it was milder than
most flus. She said that she noticed with the hospital patients who had the
flu as well as her family that there seems to be a period of depression which
follows the recovery of this flu.

Depression after flu - any flu - is a well-known effect. Must be because of the knock to the immune system- flu is a deeper level than just a cold, and takes longer to recover from.

I would suggest the depression may be as Tanya has said
Post tamiflu drug reaction or anything else that may be used to suppress the symptoms - drive the disturbance deeper
suppress physical symptoms and will get even worse physical symptoms in more life threatening organ systems or mental/emotional symptoms

I doubt it is from being ill which is a release of toxins, but from the suppression of that and interference with that.

Not something I have seen or experienced.
I suggest it is due to the suppression of symptoms

I can assure you it is common - not depression in the true sense of the word, but a definite low patch, with weepiness and lethargy. I have seen others with it too.
My doctor told me it was very common after flu - said I needed a tonic. Gave me something in ampoules to take, which included bull's blood!!! This was in France - yeukh!

Hi all,

Sorry I'm very busy these days and not able to read up Minutus but every few weeks. So sorry for jumping in late.

I'd like to bring your attention to a small but favourite of mine (copied from Murphy's MM) Please note some of the keynotes that I emphasized with CAPS.

NATRUM SALICYLICUM

HOMEOPATHIC -- Nat-sal. produces marked effect upon the internal ear with vertigo, deafness, noises in the ears with loss of bone conduction, hence is useful in Meniere's disease. Natrum salicylicum affects the head, ear, throat, kidneys and liver and on metabolism. Hemorrhages, especially nosebleed. Produces marked effects upon the internal ear with vertigo, deafness, noises in ears and loss of bone conduction, hence. Vertigo when objects seem to move to the right, worse on rising from lying.
NAT-SAL. HAS LASSITUDE, DROWSINESS, LISTLESSNESS, TREMOR. ONE OF THE BEST REMEDIES FOR THE PROSTRATING AFTER-EFFECTS OF INFLUENZA. INCREASES THE QUANTITY OF BILE. Temperature subnormal with slow pulse. Prostration after influenza. Follicular tonsillitis.
CLINICAL - Abscess. Boils. Debility. Depression. Ears., noises. Fever. Meniere's disease. Noises in the head. Edema. Periostitis. Rheumatism. Stammering. Strabismus divergens.
MIND - SEVERE MENTAL PROSTRATION, WORSE SINCE INFLUENZA. WEARINESS AND DEPRESSION. Listlessness. Apathetic. Perfectly rational periods, alternate with manifestations of insanity of a somber character. Incipient dementia. Highly nervous dread.
Abdomen - Inguinal glands swollen, sensitive.
Chest - Dyspnea, breathing noisy, shallow, panting, pulse irregular. Complete loss of voice.
Ears - Tinnitus of a low tone. Deafness. Auditory vertigo. Giddiness, deafness, noises in ears.
Eyes - Amblyopia. Pupils dilated, very slightly sensitive to light marked divergent strabismus. Eyes have a peculiar sparkle. Does not see distant objects, mydriasis. Retinal hemorrhage. Iritis due to trauma.
Face - Burning pains on skin of forehead. Left face red, both eyelids, upper lip edematous. Anxious expression, red face.
Food - Great thirst. Appetite lost.
Head - Severe headache as though head would burst. Dull headaches and confusion. Fibrositis of the scalp.
Limbs - Axillary abscess. Strong itching on back of right hand. Feet swollen, soles tender, veins of dorsa much congested.
Lungs - Dyspnea with great heat. Breathing so noisy it was heard in street, gasps for air. Breathing is shallow. Panting respiration like that of a hunting-dog.
Mouth - Speech hoarse indistinct, stammering, some words she cannot pronounce. Dryness in mouth and throat with great thirst.
Pulse - Pulse stronger, arterial pressure increased. Pulse irregular, small, weak. Pulse weak, compressible.
Rectum - Diarrhea, great thirst.
Skin - Edema and urticaria, red in circumscribed patches. Tingling and itching. Pemphigoid eruption.
Stomach - Vomiting, unconsciousness.
Temperature - Wild delirium, with great heat, dyspnea. High fever with intense thirst. Fever and rash come only with disappearance of rheumatic pains.
Vertigo - Vertigo, worse raising head. All objects seem to move to the right. Giddiness, better lying down, worse rasing head or sitting up.
COMMENTS - In some of the overdosings high fever with delirium was produced. Nat-sal. has been used freely in the manufacture of beer to prevent fermentation and this has caused poisoning symptoms, notably sweating and tenderness of the feet with dark colored and enlarged veins. Divergent strabismus and stammering were marked pathogenetic effects in one case and should lead to homeopathic uses. It has caused irritation of inguinal glands and has cured abscess in axilla.
Clarke gave Nat-sal. 3c to a patient recovering from influenza who had symptoms of vertigo with noises in the head, the patient was so much relieved by the medicine of her weakness and depression that she named the remedy her "tonic."
W. R. Rice published a case in which he gave a lady 10 grains doses of Nat-sal. every four hours. After the third dose "most alarming prostration, mental and bodily," set in. Pulse became weak and compressible and the temperature became subnormal. On stopping Nat-sal. the symptoms rapidly passed off. Ebstein has claimed for Nat-sal. in ordinary dosage a controlling power over glycosuria and R. T. Williamson has confirmed this in some cases.
COMPARE - (1) Gaulth., Chin. (2) Lobelia prupurascens - drowsiness, dizzy headache between eyebrows, cannot keep eyes open tongue white-feels paralyzed as also do the heart and lungs intense prostration of all vital forces, deadly chill without shivering, useful for the low, nervous prostration of influenza. (3) Pyrus malus, Crab apple tree - Labyrinthine vertigo. (Cooper). (4) Salix mol., Salix nig., Sal-ac., Salol. (5) In Meniere's disease, Chin., Kali-i., Carb-s.
SOURCES - Boericke. Clarke. Phatak.
