Acid throwing

A couple of weeks ago on a television news program here, there was another report on the incidence of acid throwing in Bangladesh. This is a horrific situation for (mainly) women and children already living in impoverished conditions, and it's not surprising stories like this leave such a lasting impression on the viewer.
Sulphuric, hydrochloric or nitric acids are commonly used in the final stages of making and cleaning Bangladesh jewellery, and are very cheap and readily available by the gallon in the grimy backstreet workshops . Unfortunately in the last decade or so (also in parts of India, Cambodia, Vietnam and other parts of Asia and Africa), it has become the practice for men who have had their marriage proposals spurned, to take revenge by throwing acid on to the face of young women causing permanent, horrific scarring from third degree burns. The face of the young woman is deliberately targetted to destroy her beauty and identity. In some cases the acid burns are so deep they even corode underlying bones in the face and chest, and the eyes are destroyed or permanently blinded. Sometimes it is one or two days before the shocked family can get the victim to a hospital for treatment.
There is even a trend for husbands to throw acid over their wives and babies if marriage dowries are not paid in full, or if there are disputes over land and properties with in-laws. In one tragic case, a one month old baby had acid poured down his throat by his own father, the baby has survived so far, but the injuries to his breathing aparatus are catastrophic.
Such a complete disregard for human worth is difficult to fathom. It makes you wonder if there is a mass proving of nit ac underway in Bangladesh... "Angry wilfulness. Very interesting. Grandgeorge writes about Nit-ac, "it is about Laws. The Nit-ac subject must be told that such a thing as pardon exists on this earth. Human beings are certainly imperfect; human error is therefore pardonable. On the other hand, to persevere even though in the wrong is diabolical."

Sankaran writes that the Nit-ac subject lives under constant threat (another reason for this dreadful retaliation) and presents as an unforgiving, violent and malicious nature. Sympathetic only to those who are in a similar situation.

A rx for hysteria so whole communities could come within its influence.
