Mezereum sits between a rock and a hard place – the hard place brings a fear of loss (delusion he is poor - this can pertain to any loss) and the rock brings a fear of gaining something unpleasant (delusion he has warts - there is an expectation of a shock, bad news, or something similar), so this rigid halfway house is a house of developed indifference because they cannot deal with or tolerate the state they have arrived at - where they just want to sit and look through the window for hours. But don’t be fooled by appearances because there is a lot of chaos going on inside the ‘house’. It is probably needless to say that ‘spurge’ means to ‘purge’. there is a lot of anxiety and fear wanting to come out but they try to suppress this instead of voicing it. The plant itself exudes an acrid milky substance that is mimicked in the symptom picture regarding the skin – eruptions that form thick crusts or scabs with gluey, chalky white moisture oozing from underneath the crusts. There is intolerable itching, extreme pain and a sensation as if hundreds of insects are crawling over the skin – although Mezereum is a remedy to choose for Lice (literally insects crawling on the skin) this pain is in fact a nerve sensation and Mezereum is one of the top ranked remedies for Herpes Zoster – one of the most painful conditions to endure, and it is this pain that causes one who needs Mezereum to just sit and try to find a way of enduring such unimaginable pain – as if the head would split, as if the top of the head were gone, as if head were an ant’s nest, as if everything in the head were torn asunder, as if violent and burning fire were darting through muscles. They suppress this chaos into indifference.
This is the chaos of Mezereum – something wanting to be purged but totally lacking in power or ability to do so. Instead of purging they bury themselves even deeper into the mire and they literally become buried in thought. A total abstraction of mind to the point of feeling as light as air. Buried but levitating and this brings us right back to the neutral base of apparent indifference.
But it is easy to get lost if one buries the self too deep. The delusion can be so deep as to signify death – everything is dead and this suggests a necrotic state that is paralleled in the physical pathology. Organs become prolapsed, orifices fill with acrid pus, ulcers and abscesses form, finally bones and teeth begin to decay as a syphilitic taint marries a psoric one.
This is the ultimate in suppression, can it get any worse than this? A physical suppression of an early skin condition, one that attempts to re-emerge but is buried deeper. Or an immune system damaged by vaccination and so becomes lost in its direction of maintaining health – all contribute to an unrelenting torment with which to endure.
An elderly man, developed a pain in his right jaw that spread to the surrounding nerves. Pain was described as excruciating and it was impossible to get a further description from him. GP dx shingles and gave antibiotics (not taken). Mainly sat in a chair, in front of the fire, with layers of clothes on, feeling very cold, head held in hands, not uttering a word. He was deeply concentrating on willing the pain away, desperately trying to find a mental approach for doing this and communicating outside this bubble was almost impossible. Mezereum has complete abstraction of mind. He had been like this for 2 days and seemed to be internalising utter despondency and anguish - the chaos of the pain, trying to diffuse it somehow and not being able to do so. He seemed to be indifferent to everything but it was clear to pick up this introspection as being suppressed fear and anxiety. He had then quickly developed an eruption in the place of the pain, then another. The first was about 2 cm across and the second about 1cm. They had both oozed pus and had scabbed over when I came to see him. There had been itching and now an intolerable burning. Sleep was impossible, he neither ate nor drank anything and was miserable to say the least. Two doses of Mez 30c - pain gone, quickly, the burning and itching disappeared and the crust fell off after 4 days, leaving no scars. A few days later the neuralgic type pains began again so another dose was given. Gone. Interestingly it slightly improved his hearing, had been partially deaf in one ear for years.
These extreme pains are typical of what you might get with a sinus infection as well and if sx fit then think of Mezereum. Sometimes you don't always get an eruption with facial shingles but the pains will still be there. Another typical skin condition where you could think of Mezereum would be Impetigo if sx fit.
