Re: REgulation - Was: CHC Test

Post by Soroush Ebrahimi »

Dear Theresa
When the attempts by SoH and others in UK came to nothing, I wrote to SoH and recommended that we examine and take note from other organisations - for example the Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Chartered accountants are respected by Government and businesses alike. (Yes we still have good and bad amongst them.)
There are lots of schools for accountants. But the exams for chartered accountants are set by the Institute and marked by them. So standards are maintained.
If homeopathy schools are accredited by a nationally recognised registration body, then their curriculum and their teaching and monitoring must also be approved by the same body. So the tests at the end of each year set by the nationally recognised accreditation body should not be a major problem.
To me it seems a simple and effective way of doing it.
The schools have the freedom to teach what they want to a degree in addition to the core criteria set out by the registration body. So we would then be sure that the graduate are all up to a set standard.
[My problem has always been, if someone in another town requires the help of a homeopath, can one safely pick up the directory and guide them on?
Would one do it to one's nearest and dearest?]

Soroush

Interesting typo here, Luise. We spent many years in UK trying to get a registration/self-regulation concensus going in order to avoid the state 'fist'! It fell apart at the eleventh hour and now an attempt by the largest organisation to go it alone and make the ensuing independent body open to non-members too also seems to have hit a wall. No-one is giving up on the ideal but it is looking increasingly unlikely to me that the state fist will be avoided. In our case there would be a general lowering of standards as our existing colleges mostly teach to well above the general standard of 'complementary' therapies. The emphasis would be on professional behaviour rather than quality and type of practice, I suspect.

the state fist in order to mean anything?

I mean, just as anyone can call himself a homeopath, any group of
people can set up a "certification board". set standards of their own
liking and start certifying - schools and individuals.

So standards would have to be agreed on by ALL those who consider
themselves homeopaths, they would have to speak in one voice to
persuade the authorities to agree to those standards. If there is
strife, you cannot expect the authorities to know enough to determine
whether classcal homeopathy or Heilkunst or mixopathy or.. standards
are best - and you cannot expect Heilkunst or mixopathy to agree that
"classical" is best or the only way.

I do not see how you can overcome that hurdle.

Dear Soroush,

Are you wanting to make a case against using homeopathy at a distance?

If so I do not agree.
ALL my work is by email (not by phone).
There are lots of huge advantages to doing it this way and it is very
successful for the client.
Everything in writing
no misunderstandings
client can re-read instructions often
H can re-read questionnaire answers often
No rush notes in cleitn presence
Nothing client says forgotten or omitted
can send more questions any time
client c an send extra thoughts any time
any time is literally any time
Questionnaire gets fine-tuned but has important basics written ahead,
thus never forgotten
Time to fine tune questionnaire with good thought between client
contact and questionnaire.
No stressed animal in clinic getting sicker
Can work with baby elephants, wild animal parks, adult giraffes and
entire herds of cows.
(What size office did you want me to have? :-)
Gives access to clients anywhere with internet, and even remote
places now have satellite.
Allows the homeopath to specialize in rare disease and get very good
at it.
Allows the homeopath to send pre-written emails (custom-edited) of
explanations of aspects of the approach, or of homeopathy, of of
nutrition , diet, etc or of whatever helps the client feel better
about the process.

I could go on all day.....

I LOVE working by email.....

Some people do not like working that way - which is fine too.
The point is - we all need to work the way we are best suited to
work, (not telling others what's best for them!) so that we each use
the way that provides the very best use of our skills and uniqueness,
to best help the client.

Namaste,
Irene

Dear Irene
You mis-understood.
If one picks a homeopath from the directory, how do you know how good they are?
Would you send your nearest and dearest to them?
Would you have a similar problem with choosing an accountant?

I agree that there is no easy way to find a competent homeopath other
than personal knowledge referral.
One has to look at credentials the school and references. Still
difficult:-)
We do need a way to certify a minimum proficiency has been reached.

Sadly the SoH directory does not indicate the college where the person graduated from - I asked for this info to be included but was ignored.
