This may be a stupid question but are you allowed to use a MM and rep during the test or do you have to memorize the majority of the polycrests?

were told to use whatever rep we wanted, although kent
was the traditional one.

Hello Erica,
You are allowed to have a rep of your choice for that portion of the exam. The MM is from memory. They ask that you study a list of 154 rxs.

Hi Richard,
Presuming that all or many of them are polychrests that would mean
that you either have thousands and thousands of symptoms to memorize
or that you are urged by the system to limit yourself to a small MM -
that considered suitable by the CHC - or that you are led into the
fault of prescribing by repertory outcome.

I completely lost faith in the CHC test after my experience ten years ago.
I took it with a colleague and passed everything but the cases. I did pass the Theory and Philosophy, the MM and the Medical Science.

My Colleague also failed the cases and the medical section. This was after a very good
two year training and both of us having many years of study before that, as well.

We retook it together. She passed the medical but we still both didn't pass the cases.
I've done really well with patients over the years and paper cases elsewhere but just couldn't seem
to give them what they wanted. I don't think we were allowed to use computers then, just our books.

Then my colleague was sent the cases and told to do them at home and send them back and passed.
I was not given that opportunity - as the tests are supposed to be proctored my colleague should not have been either. I thought that was very unfair.

She's a good homeopath so I'm glad she got certified but as you can imagine it left a bad taste in my mouth about the whole organization.

i agree that testing is really about gamemanship and knowing
the rules of the game to win. i was very glad to do this
2 month prep course which provided those rules, including
the ones needed to do the cases. my understanding is that
they really only use polychrest cases. further, they want
to see a particular format used for the case presentation.
karen allen puts out a book for studying for the chc which
is probably invaluable if one doesn't take a prep course
geared to the test.
that said, i am not at all convinced that taking the test
is that meaningul since, like most tests, it primarily shows
that you know how to pass a test. the real world is quite
different.
