Control of Homeopathy - Was: Homeopathic pharmacy responsibilities

Again, I have not been able to read a lot of what went on before but it seems to me that there is not much time left in which pharmacies and homeopaths will be able to do what they like with their remedies.

Things are being moved into place to control homeopathy and the production of its medicines. It is more advanced in some countries than in others but will probably soon be global as a result of the push for 'harmonisation'.

For example, the access and use of nosodes is becoming more and more restrictive. If what is happening in Australia is representative of what will happen elsewhere (and in some countries it is even more advanced), drug regulating authorities will take greater control of the regulation of homeopathic medicines, especially the nosodes.

These remedies - produced from animal or human origin - will quite probably not be allowed to be sold or distributed in the future until they meet the safety requirements of those agencies - prions from the mad cow problem will be cited as one of the reason for this, and the need to ensure good manufacturing practices. This is what currently exists in Australian legislation and last time I checked quite a few years ago, assessment and approval by our agency would cost near to $100,000 for each remedy. Currently, changes are underway that will lead to the introduction of even more onerous legislation. From what I understand, the same is underway in many other countries.

In the future, it is quite probable that a paper trail of each remedy, nosodes especially, will be required stating the source of the original substance, how and when it was collected and transported, which pharmacy was responsible for its preparation and under what conditions, and to whom the remedy was subsequently supplied. When you consider that we have no idea about the source, the when, and the how of many of our nosodes, it is easy to see that in one fell swoop there is the potential to lose many of our remedies.

We will also have to justify the reasons for their use so quite possibly reprovings will have to be done, especially for remedies with which there are mainly clinical indications. For those nosodes that have no provings - most of them, we could lose the right to produce, purchase and use them altogether.

In a post someone recently placed on another list they told of how 8 FDA agents raided Homeopathy Works in the states regarding nosodes early in April this year. Does anyone know anything further about this?

Hi Fran,

Well, I have sounded a warning about that several times during the
last few years, right here on the list. Specifically about nosodes,
about the fact that in most of Europe already they were hard to get
and that they have to be made from sterilized material.

I had urged homeopaths in the UK, where those laws were not yet passed
to get active to prevent it there. (We do not know whether noseds made
from sterilized substances have the same spectrum of effectiveness as
those that were made from living tissue/bacteria, virus etc.)

I urged them to have the pharmacies in UK specify whether a certain
nosode they sold was made from sterilized material.

There was no reaction from anyone, it seems.

Afaik all this started with legislation of the "European Community". I
warned then that it would probably spread to non-European countries.
It appears I was right.

And yes - there is more to come.

Last time I spent energy trying to inform myself, the goal was herbs,
i.e. herbs that may have adverse influence of regular medicine drugs
to be removed from the shelves.

Since hardly anyone, either here, internationally nor in Germany
appeared interested I stopped wasting time and energy on it. So I no
longer have up-to-date information.

Hi Luise,

I would guess that many others' situation is the same as mine, where
there is no lack of interest (actually I am *very* interested, and very
much share your concern!), but rather just not knowing how to respond
or what to do. Other than sign petitions as they come across my
desktop, and for *that* reason i do believe it's valuable for us to
keep hearing the information, hear about what changes are taking place
in various parts of the world.
