some light relief

Hey all, I've been catching up my classics in the 5 minutes I have free before falling asleep, and am reading 'A Suitable Boy' -Vikram Seth. Am enjoying it thoroughly, particularly as the mother - Mrs Rupa Mehra - is persuaded to visit a homoeopath for her diabetes. It was her granddaughter and friend who persuaded her by talking about his great reputation as a healer - 2 cases they refer to are he gave thuja for an eyelid cyst and pulsetilla (sic) for inflamed and infected sinuses. In the consultation his questions completely bewilder her and it's very funny to read.

So - a small and easy quiz - he asks her: if she is easily irritable (answer - yes); is she teary (yes); does she have despair, melancholy (sometimes - esp when thinking of my late husband); does she have loss of memory (no - always remember important dates); does she grind her teeth in her sleep (how do I know - I'm sleeping); does she wake up thirsty during the night (yes - often); is she fond of mangoes (yes - how did you know!!?); does her urine smell of violets (how dare you!!!)

He gives her a Rx based on this short and very un Sankaran-like consult, but he doesn't say what it is. What is it/

The alertness of mind would rule out Nux M? and likely to be a polycrest - a mixture of irritability and weepiness, diabetes, thirst, background grief/sadness, no idea about the mangoes and without my books today the only 2 rx I can remember that have the violet urine odour is Phos and Nux-M, so I'd pick Phos.

I always get confused here because I don't know what a violet smells like.... and am pretty sure a lady in India wouldn't as I don't believe they grow there. Apparently lots of people can't smell violets, anyway. Perhaps we should think carefully before asking questions like this!
I really enjoyed the book - I thought Mrs Mehta might have a touch of the Lil tigs about her.

But I think the point here is that we have the rubric so that it can be used so we need to know what this odour is (violet odorata being one of the stronger smelling violets, quite sweet and heavy) - occurs in Gonorrhea and prostate problems as well. The remedy Terebinth has it as well as Nux-M and Phos, but can't think of others, sure there are more. But her reaction to the question seemed revealing as well, quite indignant about her urine possibly having any smell at all - perhaps that is a clue.

But most importantly direct questioning of this nature is a complete 'no no' in homeopathic consultation unless you have a very quick turnaround of clients and our asian friends are particularly good at cutting down the time involved in a consultation

violets grow rampantly on my lawn. they are beautiful, early spring growers but
i never notice any smell. perhaps the books question was done tongue in cheek.
also better to ask about a lovely than bring up foul smelling urine in a novel!
as for mangoes, there is only 1 rx in my radar and that it --mango! duh.

Considering the location I guess the mangoes are a red herring, common fruit taste
