[SPAM?] Osteoporosis

Post by Dale Moss »

"All over the place" = docs didn't know what to make of her bone density scores because the values differed so widely.
Peace,
Dale

Hi, Dale.
This is nutritional information rather than homeopathic – Based on best research to date, she should be getting, one way or another, Calcium 1200-1500 mg daily (Varied salts, or Calcium citrate, because Calcium carbonate is poorly absorbed), and Vitamin D3 1600-2000 IU. The Calcium should be divided into 3-4 doses during the day, because not more than 600mg can be absorbed at any one time, apparently. Ideally the calcium should be accompanied by a blend of minerals in proportion to the calcium: magnesium, boron, and silica are other important minerals for bones. And she should probably add a Vitamin K3/ K4 supplement unless she eats enormous amounts of green leafy vegetables regularly. Recent research has shown that the K contributes importantly to the elasticity of bones, which may be an even more important factor in preventing fractures than bone density. (one reason the “bone-building” drugs cause pathological fractures is that they stop the formation of new bone, while the old bone tissue becomes denser, and the bones end up much more brittle after 5 years or so on these meds… so the situation ends up worse. ). Obviously, if she happens to be taking an anti-clotting medication (I don’t expect she is), she would have to work with the prescribing doctor to adjust the medication so she can take the K and still have the desired prothrombin level).
It was interesting that the Calc-p and Sil cell salts may have affected the bone density measurements. It’s not uncommon, however, for bone density measurements to vary widely from one site to another, depending at least partly on the amount of weight-bearing exercise that each site regularly receives. It would be interesting to know what her baseline measurements were, and how the new activity of riding may have helped to strengthen some areas. Yes, the fact that she fell and didn’t break any bones was a good sign. And the whole issue of bone health is – like all natural processes – way more complex than anyone understands.
Hope this is helpful in confirming what you told her to do.
Rosemary

Recent research shows that humans make and absorb 10,000 units of Vit
D from sunshine after 15 mins exposure of 50% of the skin, daily.
(There is an excellent article in a Scientific American of several
months back, pointing to all the research findings.)
Thereafter we do not make more that day. So this is a good guide to
what is normally ndeeded daily. It is a LOT more than usewd to be
thought correct.
(There is no evidence of any side effects of excess when supplemented
at 10,000 IU a day of NATURAL D3, or even if 5 times that is used.)
For people who live in high latitudes as I do, it pays to supplement
about that much - and I use 50,000 IU weekly. BUT - a big but - I use
the natural form only which is D3, and not the D2 which is the Rx
form my Dr prescribed when she saw how low my serum D was. (All Rx
vitamin D is artificial D2 and not natural D3.)
MOST of the Vit D3 made and absorbed by people is used by the
immune system - and the bone usage is relatively minor in
comparison. Basically we all need a LOT more than used to be thought.
This artificial K (such as K3, K4, K5 etc) does not work properly to
keep calcium in the bone. It supposedly helps with other things
(clotting...).
The natural forms of Vit K (K1 and K2) are the ones that help with
keeping Ca from being leached out of bone.
K1 is from green leafy veg as most type O blood group people will
enjoy. K2 is found in yogurt and other cultured products with live
culture, as most folks with Type A blood prefer.
Something like Spinach or dandelion or collard is best for K1 - and
it is very significantly better than the next best vegetable (which
is asparagus with only a fraction of the K found in spinach).

Namaste,
Irene

Hi Irene, others,

Do you have a source for high-dose Vit D3?

Googling gets me round and round the mulberry-bush;-(

Thanks, Rosemary. This was very helpful. The Vit. K3/K4 is a new addition to the mix, at least to my knowledge, and its contributing to bone elasticity is interesting. I've seen the bone brittleness caused by Fosamax, et al., in an elderly patient who suffered a spontaneous fracture of the sacrum after, yes, five years on one of those "bone-building" medications!
Peace,
Dale

Glad to see you followed my non-pharma vitamin D3 advice provided to you here on 9/25/08 in thread Taking Vitamins after being misled that your prescription Vitamin D was D3 but actually D2.
