nymphomania?

Post by Vera Resnick »

Could promiscuity in a homosexual be called nymphomania as well? Px goes through phases of starting up with strangers but the contact is joyless, he can't wait to get it over with, and also feels fearful, that he might have put himself in danger.

I can't post more details. Any ideas of more rubrics I can use, or remedies?

Vera

I would say you could see it thus. There is the rubric 'fear of his own sexual impulses' = lac cpr - definitely worth looking at. Will have a think when I've more time, Joy

Nymphomania is used to describe female behaviour, homosexual or heterosexual. http://health.discovery.com/centers/sex ... mania.html

Generally, lesbians are monogamous and do not have nearly the promiscuous reputation of gay men. Nor do they have HIV+ and AIDS in significant numbers. Promiscuity in gay men is quite common along with the issues you've described mostly treated as psychological and/or psychiatric. Google gay promiscuity for more info.

Vera, another term is Satyriasis but I don't think this is what you are meaning, is it?

Satyriasis, but maybe also e.g. compulsive disorders, and/or
disconnected--maybe also investigate the *reasons* why he keeps
returning to this risky and joyless behavior, and also include the
effects that it has, what it brings out in him (fearful and anything
else)?

compulsive disorders definitely fits with the whole picture, includes other behaviours as well. In general taking the whole thing into the broader area of other behaviours that are compulsive and bring no joy is relevant.

According to Yasgur "satyriasis - an excessive and often uncontrollable sexual desire in men". I was thinking of nymphomania because he is usually the more "feminine" partner - which leads to a lot of questions about remedies frequently given to women in this case.

The history is very complex, murky and can't be quoted here. Reasons probably drift around ideas of self-punishment, old habit, etc. He has been in therapy at various times - I'm sure it has been of some help, and I think homeopathy has increased his awareness of when he's headed for behaviours that will be self destructive.

Chapter 18
Staphisagria
(staph.)
George: One can easily mistake Staph. and Coff. The debate which we had in the case yesterday was very interesting.
Staph. is one of the sensitive remedies. It is a remedy which produces an aliveness of emotions. The emotions are very much alive but their physical strength is not great. So you have a patient who has light emotions with great sensitivity, but very little resistance. The emotions are not strong in the way that we usually mean forceful emotions. They are people who will become sick if the emotions are somewhat suppressed. They cannot find expression because of certain values or certain existing reasons. They have to withhold and that is where pathology arises. Staph. is the main remedy for suppressed emotional reactions.
You may get physical symptoms, emotional symptoms or mental symptoms. But the main reason for that is a sudden suppression. There are situations where these people do not protect themselves in the way that an Ign. can, by not showing the emotions. That is the point at which they have a shock and they withdraw inside themselves. They are people who usually have a sweetness. They will have suffered a lot and you will think that they should have some resentment against the world. Due to their suffering you will see that they have some grudges against society, people, the world. But it seems that their nature cannot take this attitude. They cannot hurt somebody with their feelings. It is very difficult for them to hurt somebody.
When they come for consultation, they may tell you that they have had repeated cystitis. "I have taken antibiotics many times and it does not seem to help." It comes again and again. Immediately you see a person who is sweet and controlled. But if you probe into the matter and learn more about their lives, you may come up with a story which is really Staph., which is that they will tell you about their emotional or sexual lives and you will see that they have been suffering because of the partner being very rude, very harsh, brutal sometimes. Yet they seem to hold no grudges against that person. They seem to accept all that and to view it as a kind of fate or karma. In proportion to what they have suffered, there is no resentment. There may be resentment, but nothing in proportion to what they have suffered. They are people who are very high strung and excitable. The emotions can flare. The senses are in a state of excitement. The taste, the sight, the sounds, the smell are all acute.
Question: They would not flare into anger and resentment?
PAGE 223
George: They will, but the main thing that is behind is that when they see controversy, there is no strength behind the emotions to present their case and to state the unjust behavior of the other person. You will never find this attitude towards others in Staph. They kind of swallow things - more and more and more.
Question: How does that differ from Puls.?
George: It is different altogether.
Puls. will have reactions by being irritable. The main reaction will be crying. That gives great relief to Pulsatilla's emotional state. So if you hurt them, they will have a kind of outlet.
But in Staph. they will become speechless. You tell them something and they cannot speak. Everything stays inside and then there is trembling. And then there is changing of colours in the face. You may see a white face with blue lips.
You may see a man trembling. He goes home and his heart is pumping and he is trembling. He feels that he is going to have a heart attack and has all kinds of emotions and physical symptoms because he could not express his emotions the moment somebody said something to him in a brutal or forceful way. He will be closed. He cannot express himself. That is why we say that there is a suppression of the emotions. Staph. is famous for having the kind of emotions that are really suppressed. You will find it in men as well as in women, which is unusual.
Also the Staph. patient will never impose or be demanding. They come in and you have given the wrong remedy. Because they have been treated nicely by you, they will come back. But they will try to tell you that something has happened. They will feel that you will be hurt if they tell you that the situation is exactly the same. So you don't really know what that person has done on your remedy. And then eventually you find out that if nothing has happened they will bear no grudges. They do not demand anything.
That is the time where you may have a case of Staph.
Question: You said that Phos. would never bear a grudge?
George: Yes, but this is in another context. Phos. will give you their whole story and you will make easy contact with them. You can talk to them about different things, whatever that may be. You can talk to them about their way of life and so forth. He will tell you anything which is happening with him - sexual, non-sexual, with his family, with his friends - everything! It is another context altogether.
But Staph. is sitting there and they will tell you exactly what is the problem and nothing more in order not to tire you.
PAGE 224
Question: How would Coff. differ from that?
George: Coff. is more intellectual. They will have an activity of the mind which, even in primitive, uneducated people, is stable. It takes excitement and is more forward than Staph. They tend towards Phos. states.
Question: In this encounter that they have with people, do they handle that like Lyc. also.? They can't express it and then they start trembling inside?
George: No, Lyc. is social and expressive, as long as he does not undertake any responsibility, of course, Lyc. in a social affair would be forward and do a lot of joking. But Staph. will be reserved and select company which is to their taste. Lyc. will choose friends from many sources.
Staph. will choose one or two persons that they feel congenial with, like Sil. The only difference is that Sil., because it has a kind of tiredness, will not confront or contradict you.
You are going to get dizzy from all of these comparisons.
Sil. will not confront you and they will say that you are right. But they will express their opinion or accept your point of view and keep their own. It is a kind of tiredness that keeps them from going into confrontation. She is feeling quite strong to do this in case she wants to.
Staph. is weak! They are very weak-minded. They are emotional. You see, Sil. is not so emotional. Staph. are over-emotional people and that is why the ailment which usually comes with Staph., comes from a relationship which is emotional. Staph. people do not have trouble in keeping a job and everybody likes them, because they never confront anybody. So they will not have problems with their jobs.
But where the emotional factors are involved and a great urge for acceptance and not to be criticized, it is a strong feature for them. And when they are accepted, they get some expression of their emotions, and everything is okay. But once there is a criticism, a rebuke, a confrontation, there is trouble. Even slight things that very much concern the emotions. That is why EMOTIONAL INFATUATIONS AND BREAKING OF THEM ARE THE MAIN CAUSES FOR PATHOLOGY OF STAPH.
Question: What you just said sounds extremely similar to Nat-m.
George: No, I still have not given you the idea.
Question: I mean that whole thing about criticism.
George: No, no, no, it is a different reaction altogether. They want to express feelings. They cannot keep them back. They have feelings and feelings arise all the time. They feel a lot, whereas Nat-m. does not feel ... no, not, does not feel, but does not have this abandonment of emotions. They are sweet persons - Staph. - but they are weak. Highly strung emotionally, sweet, weak, and emotions which are refined. They are not coarse and vital. They are going to have a lot of emotional troubles in their lives. They are going to go through hell in their lives.
PAGE 225
You can imagine that after a man realizes the woman does not confront him EVER, and so he will become more and more wild with her. She will be suppressed more and more because she offers no resistance. So usually this type of woman will see somebody and fall in love with him. The next thing is that she feels very happy because she adores him and does not rebuke or confront him. Then there is a kind of affair which easily leads to marriage because she does not confront or have any faults. The man feels that this is the woman in his life and they will get married. Once they get married, the man starts being rude and brutal in his behaviour because she will never ask him why he spoke to her like that or treated her like that.
Question: Is it fear that keeps them from expression?
George: It is a kind of speechlessness. They will be married two-three months and then they have done something like break a vase. The man suddenly brings out his anger. And Staph. cannot talk. They may go into another room and start trembling, but if the person comes to say they are sorry, they still feel that they have imposed on him. They will think about the other person and how they will take this reaction.
THEY CANNOT PROTECT THEMSELVES AT ALL. So eventually that which was very beautiful and very nice becomes something which is intolerable inside, but they will not have the courage to set the matter right or get a divorce. They are very romantic people. Very romantic! They will keep a marriage for as long as ten years under these circumstances until you give them Staph. After several months, you will see how they assert themselves and suddenly they talk. Of course the husband had been in the habit of the same responses for ten years and so now there are complications and it is time for a divorce.
Actually when you are giving Staph. to a married woman, you are heading her for a divorce. I have seen a case of a woman - you just cannot imagine how sweet they are and they are more sweet than Phos. - who was married with a man who would beat her brutally. She was married to a very rich man. She was worried about her parents if she should divorce him. I said, "Yes, but you cannot tolerate all of these things or you are going to go crazy." I have seen it so many times that they will come after several months and be in the middle of a divorce process. It is almost a routine. Unless you take the husband and treat him as well. Then the marriage may keep going. But definitely if a Staph. is going to assert their feelings and demand their own rights, it will end in divorce.
PAGE 226
Question: You are saying that because they marry a Staph. woman that it brings out that rudeness and brutality. It is interesting because a child may not be given any limits where the parents are very free, and will do that too. It is almost like they will do more and more and more just to see if they can get a reaction.
George: Yes. You see the child - a Staph. child - is brought about by seeing fighting between the parents. Then he will go speechless and after that develop the symptomatology.
There is another stage of Staph. where it progresses and goes towards a kind of mental disorder, then they have the tendency towards the opposite exactly. The child will become wild and with the least provocation become unco=ntrollable emotionally - violent. Especially they will want to throw things - this is very characteristic. The adults will be violent too. But this is a mental state which they reach.
Question: Before they reach that state and the husband has been nasty, does she become sort of cold and will not talk to him for two days or something like that?
George: They become sulky, but it is not the sulkiness of Nat-m. They show everybody that they are sulky.
The sulkiness is out of fear more than out of grudges.
Question: Are Staph. people always intellectuals?
George: Not really intellectuals. I have never seen that. A really intellectual to me is a diseased person. Whatever is out of moderation from our point of view is considered diseased. So the intellect of Staph. is not affected very much, especially in the beginning. It is the emotions from which they suffer a lot. So it is a kind of empty state. They are not intellectuals.
The person who is so intellectual is a person who is still trying to protect himself from something which is weak, from something which is not healthy. When we see intellectuals here, we don't mean the philosophical thinker - a philosophical penetration of somebody's mind. An intellectual is a person who can prove to you that this blackboard is not green because of this and this and this. An intellectual is one who finds another point of view, whatever it is. Where is the real truth and they will find another attitude. His mind is working not from a deep place in his own being. It is working on a level which is superficial. That is why you see people who are successful in whatever they do. Why? Because they put up a facade and are talking in a way which is always putting others down. But if you observe this person, you will see that there is nothing behind them. Then you see another one who does not speak and who is shy, but you will see that there is something behind that man or woman. It is a kind of pathology.
PAGE 227
So this kind of intellectualism is not in Staph. Staph. will go right through to the matter. They will say to you ... The people who have strong emotions, are the most healthy. The more healthy the part of man which we call emotional, the more the total of the being is healthy. Philosophically what I mean is that which we call in ourselves emotion - what is the highest expression of emotion? Love! So if the person has that, they can be wise. It is a strange thing.
The simple people - you may find one in a village - his emotions have not been torn to pieces as are those living in societies. You might ask advice about a problem which you think is very complicated. He will go to the heart of the matter and give you the answer. This type of guru sometimes is useful. They are people who have had the most love and they are the most healthy emotionally. Before we can express the emotion of love and we pass it through the intellect and we make a whole conversation about it, then we have stunted that love. With Staph. there is this healthiness in the emotions but they are weak and they are easily suppressed. But this is a big thing versus Ph-ac. where you will see sick emotions. You will see a lot of love and compassion and affection and then you will see the mind will go blank. So the Staph., from a point of view, is quite a healthy person. That is why they are so nice, also.
Question: Who is healthier - Nux-v. or Staph.?
George: Don't take it this way.
Response: It takes a Nux to ask that question! (Laughter)
Question: How do you rate Staph. on that scale of sensitive remedies?
George: Staph. will be above the Natrums.
Question: I am having a bit of trouble here. So the trick is to get the head and the heart together, isn't it?
George: Yes, that's true. But when we say healthy in emotions, what do we mean? When we say a healthy mind, what do we mean? A man who has what?
Response: Clarity, creative, helpfulness and selfless.
George: But what do you have if you have a person who is selfless and clear? What quality will his mind have? Wisdom. He will be a wise man.
PAGE 228
If a man is finally healthy in his mind, he will be wise. So a man who is healthy in emotions will be calm and serene, but at the same time he will express the positive emotion of love - the highest.
In order to have a really healthy man, you have to have a man who has love and wisdom. There is an idea that you must balance your mind with your heart and not let your heart get out of control and do not let your mind become so intellectual that it goes out of control or balance with your heart.
Now we get lost in this idea, but if we go to the final goals, where we take an individual towards a single point, he should reach a state of love and wisdom. That is the perfect individual. If he reaches that state, he gets cancer and he dies.
It is important to understand this point. We are taking the individual towards that which is more clear in the mind and more positive in feelings. So if we see that he is going towards that direction, we are taking him through a cure. He is really progressing. But if we see the opposite and he is going towards disease we must understand, otherwise we shall be in a total darkness when we treat somebody.
It is interesting what you will find in the process. If you say that you will give him this remedy or that remedy and then that remedy, and clear him from the miasms, am I going to produce a really wise, whole human being? No. You are giving the possibility, by giving the right remedy, to free him from pain and from suffering so that he may evolve to that state. You are giving him that possibility and it is a much better possibility than when he has physical pain and emotional pains and stresses. You are releasing him from the anxieties so that he may progress on his own. These kind of people these days are full of fears and anxieties. They are much worse than if they had pains in the joints or the stomach or whatever. So we free them from that. It is a great possibility that we give them to progress further.
During that progress, what happens? There is a time when progress stops and you cannot find any further remedy. So there are certain barriers which are put there by Divine Providence we can say. You cannot break through. Why? Because he has to understand certain things. He needs experience and maturity to be able to progress further.
So if the individual is evolving and you give certain remedies and you reach a certain stage where you cannot break through. He will complain of little things, but still you cannot find a remedy. Then that individual may go through a crisis in experiencing life in which he realizes certain things which are very valuable for him. And that information which he receives in experiencing the crisis is a breakthrough.
PAGE 229
After that, you will again see a symptomatology. And then you give him further remedies and he will make progress. So if he stays with you and you are a good homoeopath who knows what he is doing and when you cannot give him any more help, and you say, "This is what I have done with you." How do you know that? Because you see, most of the time there is no symptomatology and no picture really. For a long time he comes back and the symptomatology does not give a picture. Let him go and experience his life and then there will come a time when he will seek what is different in him - he seeks the truth. These are final questions.
He is now happy, satisfied and everything is going fine, but then there is a further kind of quest - investigation - which may bring him into a crisis state. If he is sincere enough, this will bring him into a state of crisis - inner crisis. And then after that this is the time that he needs a good psychologist or advisor, who is more experienced and who has been through the process and knows what he is going through.
Question: As long as you are talking in that realm, where does responsibility stand in all that? There are many levels of responsibility and pathology. People who have wisdom and love, take on a lot of responsibility and can involve themselves with service.
George: Responsibility for me is .... you see, we have free will. Once we have free will and enjoy it, we have responsibility. There is no way out of responsibility. This is what I feel is unhealthy in the guru-chela relationships. If the disciple gives the responsibility of his own life to the guru, it is wrong. He is going to have another pathology. It is the same pathology as an unhealthy love-affair. It is the responsibility of the guru to make him undertake responsibility.
If the students of Greece lean on me quite a lot while I am there, and if they rely on me more and more, there will develop a kind of relationship which is not healthy for them. Neither is it healthy for me. It is going to tire me very much and it makes me sick. It is going to make them weak in making decisions and taking responsibility.
Question: I was also thinking that if their level of health improves and say, for example, this group wanted to start taking on and wanting to spread homoeopathy or wanted to see more patients, and then they collapse or get themselves into a state of sickness.
George: There is an imbalance. There is ambition involved and behind ambition is egotism and selfhood. I take a lot of responsibility then. I like it because the others say, "He is wise", and so forth and so on, whatever it is, and that takes everything away.
The ego bloats when one can say that he will go to an assembly of one million people or .... this eventually will lead to a state of illness. I come here to give you a month of seminar. When I go back, I will sit back for a few days and think about whether it was worthwhile and why. I make my next decisions by making that experiment and seeing where I made my mistakes, where I gave too much or where I gave too little. If I don't do that and I just go through the month I will be sick very quickly.
PAGE 230
So there is a point where you have to be very careful. You are all in the same situation, because you are learning a science which is very valid, after all, and it is natural that because you are very few that very many people will want it. You are all going to deal with that situation. I can give it to you in writing.
DON'T OVER-EXERT YOURSELF. It is a big thing. You will know something that everybody wants to know. Your responsibility is not to have this knowledge and keep it to yourself because this would be sickness - an Ars. situation. But if you go out and treat yourself like Phos., it is again sickness.
The manager of a bank or a high official, they have to be responsible people. Staph. people do not take on responsibility. There is a phrase which is indicative: "True humility arises from an internal assumption of powerlessness."
Say that we have certain individuals and we went to find out which one of them has the best possibilities for evolving. You will have the Ph-ac. person where you will see that the emotions are flat. No emotions. There is much less possibility for evolving. They are not healthy. Who is healthy? I don't believe that any of us are healthy in the true sense of the word. The moment that we are dealing inside either with indifference or negative emotions, we know that there will come a state of indifference. There is very little positive and then total indifference. From that moment forward, indifference to negative emotions is easy and necessary to exist. I believe that if we could make all of our emotions positive and all of our thoughts positive, we would go away from this world immediately. At that stage we will fly to the angels.
Here you need the elements of positive and negative in order to exist on the material, physical, relative world. Relative means not absolute. We are living in a world where we are born and we die, so that we ar living in a relative state completely. So the absolute means without body. The moment then that that goes towards the absolute, that which is relative will minimize. It is a mathematical formula. The moment that this tips to absolute, this relative stage will become minimized.
So if we go and make ourselves absolute in wisdom, absolute in love - that means not even a trace of indifference - the emotions are all positive and the thoughts are all positive and creative - this which is relative cannot stay any longer. It disappears. It goes to pieces. This is the idea behind this. We are getting off on philosophical discussions today.
PAGE 231
I believe that disease finally has a role to play in our lives and that which is relative, through suffering, is taken to a state of absoluteness, which can only be at the mental and emotional level.
It cannot be the physical level. The physical is born and is going to die. That is relative. So therefore, you cannot make absolute health and not die. This is a dream which will never be realized and we all know that. But the gurus claim that that which is emotional and mental - that inner self - can be in an absolute state. It can have absolute wisdom, knowledge and bliss, as the yogis say. Absolute existence. So when they meditate, they will meditate on that state of absolute existence, knowledge and bliss. But we only go to such things through suffering. Disease has its own part. Otherwise it would never happen.
I have a theory about this. You know about Adam and Eve. They lived in a paradise, it says. Was it a paradise? I believe that this stage in which they lived was not the point of the birth of humanity. The birth of humanity had taken place before.
If we take humanity as a kind of birth and final death, this is the state where they come out of the adult state - eleven years old? Adolescence. This adolescent state, where they go out of the bliss in which the child lives without knowledge and without realizing the difference in sexes, and without realizing that which is the opposite, a child does not realize that there is an opposite sex and that there are opposite qualities. As soon as the sexual opposite is awakened, he knows the opposite and he wants to cover himself. That is the time which he has timidity. Then of course comes the idea of duality. They feel that in order to be complete they must have the opposite. That is an awakening state where you know about good and evil. Then the child will realize what is good and bad. Then they will cover their genitals and they have the sense of duality. Then they fall. Then through the ages comes the evolution.
We are supposed now to be in the maturing age. We start the wisdom age. Then the final stage of fifty years old after going through all of these efforts in order to attain love, which is the state after adolescence.
It is interesting that a Staph. woman, after she gets married, will go into a state of cystitis, which is an irritation of the bladder or ureters, most probably due to coming into contact with another physical body. They develop a cystitis that will go away, if there is no pathology behind, by Staph. A newly married woman who immediately develops cystitis due to the excess of intercourse, will need Staph. It seems that in the physical body there is a super-sensitivity. That is, if you touch Staph's painful point, it is so painful that it can take them in convulsions. Tumors, haemorrhoids, whatever it is it is very sensitive to touch. They will need Staph.
PAGE 232
So again there is the same idea where you see the confrontation and the going into spasms and convulsions. Whether it is a tumour or a wart, whether it is a nodule formed ... neurofibromas ...
Responses: Neurofibromas are not painful.
George: There is another state then, which is very painful.
Response: Plain old neuroma.
George: Neuroma then. They are quite painful. Anyhow the Staph. will tend to create nodules which seem to be penetrated by very sensitive neurons. And if you touch them (warts, haemorrhoids, tumours or whatever), there is such great pain that they will go into convulsions. It is the same way if you touch them a lot or confront them emotionally. They may go into convulsions also in that state. These convulsions will appear as a coiled state.
So you have a child who is ten years old and suddenly you tell him to shut up four-five times over several months and then he will start coiling. But you have to get the sensitivity of the person and the confrontation of these emotions through the parents or the school teacher. I have seen chorea treated with Staph. many times.
Question: It should be added then?
George: Yes, sure it should be added. Do not get the idea that you give Staph. because you have chorea, because if you go the other way around you will miss it most of the time.
Comments: There are a number of bold type remedies listed for it.
Comments: I don't see chorea very much.
George: I have seen several cases. They will try to hold themselves like that and make small movements.
Comment: I think we call chorea actually the full movement
Comment: Mostly I see it in children from birth - like cerebral palsy.
George: I have seen a case of a mentally retarded child who was severely ill. The child had to give up school and could not go at all because he was oppressed because he was left-handed and the teacher told him that he had to write with the right hand. The child did not say anything. He tried to do that. At the end of the school year, he just gave up school. He was going into tantrums and started being violent and throwing things. He was hitting his mother and he presented a state where you would talk to him (he was eleven years old when he came to us and that happened at the age of six), and he would look. You would say, "What is your name" and he would look at his mother and instead of answering he would say, "Why are you writing on the paper?" I said, "Simply, I need to write your symptoms down." "What symptom?" I would say, "This business of what you are telling me." Then he would go into the sulky state. So you ask him again another question and he comes up with an entirely different answer. He does not care what he answers. He does not care what you ask him. He will look at you and make some psychological observation and starts getting afraid. So let him think that is okay and to go on and on about different things. One time he was like a wise man, and another time he was completely out of touch. He was not able to do any writing or any reading.
PAGE 233
A person might ask the mother, "Is he the only child that you have?", and the mother said, "Yes". He was 7 years old and they were on the bus and were sitting next to each other, so they started talking. The mother had another child who was more mentally retarded than this one, but she did not want to give the whole history to the woman on the bus. So the child, who seemed not to hear the discussion, turned around and said, "Why are you telling her that?" They seem out of touch. It is a curious phenomenon.
Another curious thing was that he was so sweet with us and when I played with him he would laugh and he would enjoy that. But the mother said that in the house he would hit her on the least provocation. He would blow up in anger and he would hit her hard. Because of that hitting, and I could see that the child was not violent, but the mother was describing to me a violent act. There was fear of the dark. I gave him Stram. and he was worse. I gave another remedy and then the third remedy they told me of the history of the suppression of the left hand in an effort to make him become right-handed. The idea of suppression came to my mind and I gave him Staph. 50m.
After seven years, that child has almost caught up with the four years of classes that he had missed. He is catching up almost to his age. It is a great thing. He is not going to become equal, but they were taking him to a school for special children where he could learn. He had a teacher who taught him to write again and from the very beginning he started catching up. I cannot describe to you the entire situation how it was, but it was an animal-like autistic child, with the difference being that at certain times he would have contact. And sometimes he even had wisdom and he could go into the heart of the matter when you would talk to him.
Again, because there is such an arousal of emotions and they are romantic, you would expect them to be very easily excitable sexually. This will bring them to a state where they become licentious. At the same time, because they are so sensitive and they know how easily they can be hurt ... the emotions are strong, the imagination is strong, the sexual urge is strong but they are sensitive and they cannot make contact easily. They cannot find a partner easily and they go into masturbation. So Staph. is one of the main remedies that we use to counteract chronic effects of masturbation. I remember a man who was telling me that from age six or seven he would masturbate until the age of thirty-five, at which time he came to me. He had not been with any woman. He was masturbating continually. And they will feel terrible after masturbation. They feel exhausted. Even after they have been into excesses and they go and have sexual intercourse, after the intercourse they feel very bad. They have headaches and it will take them two-three days to recover.
PAGE 234
Question: I had some question about the aggravation after masturbation. Most of the old books came out of that particular cultural perspective and ...
George: No, it will be headaches. It is not a moral issue. It can be moral, but not only.
They get a headache, especially Staph. and say that they want sex because their sexual powers are very strong. But they know that the after-effects are going to be so bad that they avoid it.
There is a time after these excesses, when there is a second stage where they become impotent.
So impotency also becomes a prominent symptom for Staph. And Staph. is one of the best remedies for impotency, along with Lyc. and Agn.
Question: Is that impotence in a person who is sexually arousable?
George: Yes, there is desire. But in impotency there is no erection. Or during the intercourse they will lose the erection. Desire is always there, in spite of the impotency.
Question: Is the sexual aspect of these people almost always there clinically? Will they always have a strong sexual drive and sexual fantasies and all of that ... is it almost always there or in a significant percentage of times will you not see it?
George: I have seen that it is always present in these cases - problem with sex. You get a man who is very macho and he cannot have a contact, he is shy and so delicate inside. I have seen that in cases where the person's work is hard - such as a sea captain. These are supposed to be rather crude people. They do not have the ability to find a woman because of their sensitivities. And they think that they are impotent. Their emotions are so soft that when they are with a woman either there will be a premature ejaculation or, due to excessive desire, there will be no erection at all.
Staph. will regulate these people and soon you may find them getting married.
PAGE 235
Question: Excessive pollution means what?
George: Excessive pollution means a lot of seminal discharge - emissions. That is the way I understand it. Pollutions of his underpants or something.
They are so excitable that they may go into bed and they will have all kind of imaginations about sex and though they may just have returned from a sexual contact, they will go to bed and imagine all kind of sexual fantasies. This relieves them usually with masturbation in spite of the fact that they have just had sexual intercourse. They are very easily excitable in that sphere.
This is a great problem of Staph. to get a divorce in the beginning. They may find it difficult to find another partner. Also the Staph. has a kind of timidity. You will not find that in Kent's repertory. They are not timid in their work, but they are timid in their emotional relationships.
As they continue in the pathology and they suffer more and more emotionally, then eventually the mind is affected in a way that resembles a kind of induration. This appears as a feeling of pressure either in the frontal area or in the occipital area in the back. In the later stages they may become so inflexible and arteriosclerotic that they may just sit and stare.
This is with old people where you will get a history of being sensitive and excitable and a lot of sex in their lives etc., and they finally go into a state of arteriosclerosis. They will have induration of the mind - it becomes hard. You will find these indurations very prominently in the meibomian glands.
People who are prone to have lots of styes most probably have a need for Staph. Always after treatment you will see that there is a little tumour left there. Do not repeat the Staph. to get this little bit of induration away, because you will not do it. The induration will stay, but the main thing, which is the inflammation, will subside.
Question: How much good can you do for a person who is sitting and staring like that? Can you use the remedy?
George: Quite a lot. You will immediately see that they come into a kind of balance in their emotions and in their sexual activities and they react well after that with quite a big difference.
Question: I think she is talking about the old arteriosclerotic people.
George: Oh, I see. In these people you can see an immediate amelioration.
The mind becomes more clear and more flexible and that will last for a few months only. Then the symptoms will return and the person will need another dose. You may have to change. There is not much that you can do when they come into that stage where they are expressionless. It is the idea that a wooden expression comes into the face, and at that stage it is quite advanced. But you will get some amelioration with Staph.
PAGE 236
There is another state which they can go into and that is a kind of hypochondriacal state - especially in those who have not associated with the other sex and have masturbated a lot. They go into a state where they will become quite hypochondriacal over their things - their rooms and the way they want their things. And they do not want you to come into their room because you will spoil their things. Not fastidious so much - hypochondriacal.
There is an anxiety for health but not as much as in the big remedies that we know for this condition. And it is not so much a state of hypochondriasis ... I must give you some examples to show you what I mean.
This person becomes unsocial and has certain patterns. A man of thirtyfive-forty years old becomes a kind of sclerotic in his expressions. They have a certain way that they will go to the toilet or do certain things. You get a normal individual and in different situations they will be flexible and change and they can adjust to another place easily. But these people cannot. They lose their flexibility and cannot go away from the patterns which were established long ago.
Question: Would you call him a creature of habit?
George: They are very sensitive. Staph. can be seen writing poems. They are not the big managers who have habits in order to be able to cope with their demands.
They will have their coffee at a certain time and wash at a certain time and follow patterns in order to accomplish what they must. But not this type. If they go into that state it is quite a sick state.
Question: Is that what you mean by hypochondriacal?
George: Yes. It is a state that I understand when I see it in a patient and I was never able to explain.
Comment: I always thought that it was just related to the body - that they would be over-concerned about what was happening to their body. Can it be in their life too?
George: Yes, it can be in their life too. Their surroundings become an extension of themselves.
Comment: Like over-attention to detail regarding their personal being, but it could include their environment.
PAGE 237
George: Their anxiety is about others also.
Question: About how their car is working or things like that?
George: Yes. Not only whether the car is working or not but about the cleanliness of the car. It must be clean in a certain way and things must be done in it this way.
Question: A sort of perfectionism?
George: Okay, it is a fastidiousness. And there is an anxiety about health. If you will blend the two, you will understand what I mean by hypochondriacal.
Question: I think of it as a lot of handwashing and things like that.
George: It is not the obsession so much. It is this also, but a lot of other things as well. When we go into obsession about washing the hands, we will go into Sulph. and Syph. But remember the idea of when they are confronted they are very pained.
The scalp is very sensitive. A tumour will have a point where the scalp will be VERY sensitive when you touch it. They will catch their breath and then this can go into a real convulsion. They can go into constant movements. And they can go into trembling externally which may last one day and go away in a confrontation.
Question: If these people show their anger, does that make them feel bad?
George: Oh yes, VERY bad. They would not express this anger in the beginning stages. Eventually they will start showing that anger sometimes. When they are pressed too much, they will tend to over-react in a situation where it is not appropriate, but it is a back-log of emotions which have been taking place all along.
Remember again the sensitivity. They don't want to hurt others. It is not the intellectual idea which is behind Nat-m. that they do not want to hurt; it is another idea altogether. They don't want to hurt because they don't want to hurt. They don't feel like hurting somebody. They are incapable of doing that because of their powerlessness.
Another interesting thing that I found is psoriasis which has broken out after an indignation or feeling of rejection.
They may have been hurt badly when their man flirted with another woman in front of them very openly and then when they got home he spoke badly to her. After three days there was a breaking out of psoriasis which eventually covered the whole body. It was in small patches, frequently. That was cured by Staph. 10m. And they have a lot of eruptions, but the most prominent is the scaly one that looks like psoriasis.
PAGE 238
Another thing that Staph. may present in a woman, due to the sexual desires is that she can reach a state of nymphomania.
Question: Are there any other confirmatory symptoms? This remedy I find could be seen commonly in our culture. Our culture is a very pressed and suppressed culture. A lot of people don't even express anger. But I find it difficult to differentiate what is really Staph. versus some other remedy. We don't have cravings and aversions and other things that you can look at to determine this. Is the trembling very prominent?
George: They will tell you that they will tremble specifically in a confrontation.
Question: But the sexuality is the confirming symptom though? You pretty much are saying that they HAVE to be hyper-sexual.
George: Yes. Or if it is going into the other stage, they are impotent. A person who has had a lot of sexual activity and now he is impotent, or a masturbator.
Also remember the idea of indurations in the glands. There are tumours and warts which are always painful to touch.
Question: What about Coloc.? That is another remedy that is related to the confrontation issue. Are they close to these people or very different?
George: You see, Coloc., Caust. and Staph. go in a circle. They are similar remedies, especially Staph. and Coloc. This is a circle like Calc., Sulph., Lyc. and like Sil., Puls., Fl-ac.
Comment: Staph. is listed as a "3" for milk aggravating.
George: Milk aggravates. You may keep that in mind, but I have not seen that.
Oh yes, the sleeplessness is true. You will get sleeplessness for the whole night without any cause. They will wake up in the morning and become sleepy. Then the next night they will go to sleep for one or two hours, wake up and then they cannot sleep again for the rest of the night. They are occupied with sexual thoughts during this time.
Question: Do you get many who will admit that?
George: Most of them are exhausted and think about sex. They think that by concentrating their mind on sexual things they may have some sleep. This leads them to masturbation.
Question: Do you get many who will admit to these sexual preoccupations?
George: You do not dare to ask some women, but when you begin to understand Staph. you will be able to tell these things.
PAGE 239
She will tell the story when she is well - when it is over. But at the time it is happening, she is too sensitive for that internally.
Question: Isn't that true of males too, that they won't talk about their sexual lives?
George: Yes, unless of course it is the main problem that they come for. Either they are impotent or they are habitual masturbators and they come specifically for that problem. There are many sexually excitable remedies such as Lach. and Plat. and Bufo., but the type is the thing that you have to differentiate. The Bufo. case you will never miss. They will have thick lips and a face which is bloated and he is in a kind of sleepy state. The lips are very very thick.
Question: You were mentioning Mohammed Ali when we saw him on T.V. and the way he is now in his mind.
George: Sexually they are so basic and without any power at all, so that they are like animals. You will sometimes see this in children. They will try to be by themselves only to masturbate. So in the repertory you may see that they seek solitude in order to masturbate.
Question: What age?
George: 8, 9, 10, 14, 15 - that age group.
What will strike you there is the element of animalism which is apparent. They don't realize what you are talking about when you try to make a conversation. Their minds are completely gone into their basicness - given completely to instinctual reactions. They are very primitive.
Question: We have a word in English which is buffoon which describes just what you said.
George: Yes, that is the word exactly. We have that in Greek too. They may be retarded children, with very thick lips and the tongue is out. They are cretins. It is interesting that the women in Brazil - you see Bufo comes from toad - they made a proving on their husbands. When these husbands were very active and the women could not stand it they would go and collect this extract and put it in their food and drinks. They noted that the sexual desire was brought down. They were making a proving on them - or a cure, actually. This is in Brazil. This was with the mother tincture.
It is very interesting because now I can visualize these Brazilians and they are actually the Bufo type. It is very seldom indicated in ...I have seen doctors who have taken Bufo and they have told me ... I have seen a very intelligent man in Athens who was an actor. We prescribed for him and he went without medicine for a very long time. Then he took the remedy because his wife was one of the doctors at the centre. So he took the books and read and then he eventually confessed to me that he had taken Bufo. It was completely out of the question because you could see that he was a refined man - more Staph. than Bufo. But he probably took it because of some tendency to masturbation.
PAGE 240
He did not want to tell me and so he went to look in the books. And so it made him worse. It is also interesting that when I talked about Staph. and said that they are usually artists, they will not be Agn. They do not have the courage to present themselves in public. They do not want to make themselves known to the public.
Question: So there is a timidity in a way?
George: Yes, there is.
Comment: It is very similar to Sil. in many ways.
George: Yes, but Sil. is more grounded.
Question: Did you say something in Greece last year about testicular tumours?
George: Yes, they get indurations in the testes.
Question: Is that cancer or what?
George: They can get indurations in the prostate gland with swelling. But where I found it most useful is in cases of convulsions after emotions which were stressed and depressed.
Question: Are these people warm or cold?
George: I did not find any extremes. They can be either worse or better with cold or heat, but there are no extremes involved. They may tend to be worse cold, but not extreme. You will not be able to make it a cold remedy and have a big point about that. I don't want to crowd you with information that you can find in the repertory. So I give you a few things that will stay in your mind. You will start differentiating eventually as you go along.

Hi Vera,

Have you considered the self-destructive aspect of it? Such behavior
could be considered just as self-destructive as driving a car 150 mph
on the freeway. Take away the pleasure or thrill-seeking, which
doesn't sound like much of a factor by your description, and what's
left? Compulsive, borderline suicidal behavior. It sounds very
syphilitic.

Perhaps a rubric about sex without pleasure would be appropriate,
too. I wonder if there's a sub-rubric of nymphomania or satyriasis
that would indicate lack of pleasure?

Good luck,
Hart

thanks for your response. Px has received Staph during treatment, has been helpful especially with physical symptoms. I cleared a problem most of the way with Lyc, and Staph completed.

I don't think he's so fearful of infection, more of other people harming him physically during intercourse. I also don't think he looks at it as making love. He doesn't want to change his orientation, but wants to be more in control. I don't think he has ethical problems with being homosexual - he's been aware and following his orientation for at least 20 years.

Is the quote from Vithoulkas?

What are some other areas where you see the compulsive aspect?
Can you say anything about how he feels about himself, his life, the
world--looking for "central delusion" or sensations, or etc.? E.g. if
this aspect weren't there at all, what might his life look and feel
like, and what might his issues be instead?
What things does he like to do, or goals, desires/aversions? (Any of
that that's not in the realm of what you shouldn't describe here?)
