cascade effect, diabetes & impotence

Post by Ruby »

I wonder, if we might find a remedy for Impotence with a homeopathic
remedy of Nitric Oxide????!!!!!?????
What do you think?

Fascinating article on a cascading wave type phenomena in tissue;

The maintenance of an erection is achieved when the initial rush of
blood past blood vessel cells prompts a continuing supply of a chemical
relaxants. The discovery could provide clues on treating impotence,
particularly in diabetes, and on circulation in the heart.

The mechanism for triggering an erection was already known to be due to
release of the neurotransmitter nitric oxide (NO) from penile nerve
endings, but this chemical release survives just a few seconds.

Now scientists at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions have discovered
that an erection is hardened and maintained by the continuous activation

of cells in the walls of blood vessels in the penis.

"The fact that NO production can be activated continually to maintain an

erection gives us a potential mechanism that can be exploited
pharmacologically or by gene therapy to treat impotence," said Arthur
Burnett, professor of urology at Johns Hopkins and lead author of the
new study.

Feedback effect

Solomon Snyder, also at Johns Hopkins said that the cascade of events
leading to full erection begins with erotic thoughts or physical
sensations that initiate a release of NO from nerves in the pelvic
region and penis.

"The NO released into the blood initiates dilation of the blood vessels
in the penis. Then the shear stress of so much blood pounding on the
blood vessels' walls activates NO synthase (NOS) enzymes in the
endothelium cells to produce more NO," Snyder told New Scientist.

"The effect of additional NO production then triggers further dilation
of the blood vessels, leading to more blood in the vessels and so more
shear stress. It's a cascade effect that maintains an erection," Snyder
explains.

Diabetes link

The researchers hope that increased understanding about the mechanism of

maintaining erection will lead to treatment of impotence, perhaps by
preventing the inhibition of NOS.

"Impotence in diabetes could be due to multiple things, but
hyperglycemia decreases NO production via NOS in cell culture and
diabetes also affects the nerves," says Burnett.

"The knowledge of how blood vessels stimulate circulation could also
help us treat other organs with endothelium cells such as the heart or
liver," Burnett adds.

Would treating with Nitric Oxide (assuming it has been proved) be treating
the totality of the impotent man??

Soroush,

Perhaps not... Perhaps it would just be "spot treating" a problem...

'Spot Treating' as you call it is suppressive. It is how an allopath would
use a homoeopathic remedy.

It is like just trying to cure mens problem in a woman by just looking at
the mens aspects. It does not lead to a cured case.

If a man is suffering from impotence
(we generally have 2 types:
1- The mind is willing, but the flesh is not &
2- There is no sexual interest whatsoever),
then we have a deep rooted problem which needs to be treated accordingly.
