first aid remedies

Post by Hart Matthews »

Hi all,

I have just purchased a homeopathic first aid kit from Hahnemann Labs, and now I'm having fun figuring out why certain remedies are in there. :-)

I have consulted my acute repertory and keynote books, but I'm not sure what would be the specific indications for the following remedies:

Elaps - [dark hemorrhages with a cold feeling inside?]

Formica rufa - [a flu with sudden rheumatic pains, restlessness and profuse sweat?]

Calcarea phosphorica - ?

Androctonus - [this was in Sherr's lecture on the remedy; does anybody recall the specific condition?]

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Just in case anyone's interested, the rest of the remedies in the kit are listed below. It's a pretty interesting selection put together by Eileen Nauman. The glaring omission is Opium, but we can't get that one here in the US. Bryonia is also not there.

The "advanced" first aid kit you mention was designed to be used with the book "Help and Homeopathy" by Eileen Nauman.

The book is available at minimum.com. You can view the table of contents, perhaps that will help?

There are excellent references on line or you can buy as a starter
book, the Boericke pocket manual of materia medica and repertory.
It will list how to use the remedies.
I'll grab the one for which you have zero, and give an example:
It suits a Calc-p innate constitutional type to help them get
healthier, more resistant to the things to which they are most
susceptible.
(Read MM yo see those things)
A recent acute case of Calc-p involved a cat with a pyometra after
she was in season but not bred. (Not good to do in cats as they are
induced ovulators, and "calling" without ovulation often leads to
problems ).
Another example: A current case I have involves an upper limb bone
sequester, and Calc-p is a wonderful bone remedy when the symptoms
fit. In this case it is a cria (baby llama), born in that horrid
record 17 Dec winter storm at minus 48 degrees, whose ears froze half
off before it could even hit the ground 20 mins after it started to
emerge. The broken limb was not immediately spotted in the urgent
hassle to dry and warm her and return her to the mother, and the body
grew new bone around the now rotting sequestered bone where it had
broken, the llama was limping and in pain - and the vet suggested
euthanasia or amputation as the only options. But Calc-p was a match
to MENTAL (always look at them) and other symptoms. Now the cria is
running around like any other little baby Llama on four legs, with
just one abscess not fully completing the drainage yet. (Healing is
always from inside to outside).

So basically - look at the case at hand, and figure what its critical
symptoms are, convert to rubrics, and then select your matched remedy.

Namaste,
Irene

Thanks, Irene -

In case anyone else is interested in the first-aid indications of the four remedies I asked about yesterday, Eileen Nauman has apparently listed Elaps for coral snake bite and Androctonus for scorpion sting (go figure). :-)

Formica rufa is listed for GI disturbances with red, itching, burning mucosa, and for violent attacks of coughing with vomiting. Presumably, it might also work for a flu with sudden, intense joint pains and the same redness, itching and burning.

Calc phos is listed for slow-healing fractures, especially hip fractures. Maybe I'm missing something, but this just doesn't seem like an acute indication. I think I'll slide Op into the Elaps slot. There are plenty of coma and head trauma remedies in the kit, but Op is hard to beat.

I'm considering replacing Calc-p with Bry. However, Andre Saine lists Calc-p as an atelectasis remedy in his Repertory Additions. It seems to me that would be a slow-onset condition if it called for Calc-p, but I don't have any experience with it in that context. Has anyone else given Calc-p for atelectasis?

So, has nobody on this list watched Jeremy's lecture on Androctonus and remembered the specific acute indication for it? I think it may have something to do with the sensation of a needle through the eye.

Much thanks to Sara Klein Ridgley, who consulted her copy of Nauman's book for me. I have my own copy on order now.

Yes, I've watched Jeremy's lecture on Androctonus (on
HomeopathicSymposium), and it is *wonderful*--as are his others!! But
I don't remember an acute condition, unless possibly a visual symptom
where it appears that one is looking out through a hole? I don't know
what acute condition that would go with, tho.

Thanks, Shannon -

Looking back through my notes, I thought I had just neglected to write down the specific condition. But now I'm looking back through it again and thinking the only specific he mentioned was Retinitis pigmentosa, which of course is not an acute indication.

I suppose any eye injury with a needle-like sensation or tunnel vision might also respond to Androc if the rest of the case corresponds.

Yes, I like all of Sherr's materia medica lectures, except that he does such a thorough job that for days afterwards I feel like I'm proving the remedy. :-)

Thanks again,
Hart

Some of the proving symptoms:

numbness, radiating pains, choking sensations (like a pad of cotton wool), salivation, everything tastes like lemon, jaw aches cold water, tingling and numbness of tongue, abundant saliva, teeth pain warmth.

Various joint, back and limb sensation but not all of them are bone pains specifically.

Not just hip. Also limbs, as in the example I posted.
I think so - the mentals being most important and the generals next
most relevant.
You are looking only at specifics and that is THIRD only in
importance in remedy selection.
Yes. Broken bones are indeed acute conditions. Some acutes can take a
while to heal, and some can be very severe and life threatening.
The difference:
Acute is caused by some external event at a specific time,k and will
resolve (either in health or death or other stable state).
Chronic is an internal illness that develop;s over time and will not
ever resolve on its own.
Also a mistake in my opinion.
Each condition has specific indications and a MATCHED remedy will
work where a non-matched one will not.
For example concussion will often resolve with nat-sulph, so I have
that in my kit.
Op helps where there is no pain in a condition that is usually
painful, and may drag a leg; - a different indication from Nat-sul
concussion which has to do with confusion, and dizziness for example.
Same comment. Bry will NOT work where Calc-p is indicated.
Remedies are not interchangeable, they each have specific indications
for use, kinda like paint colors. OIt you want blue results, it will
not help to use red paint.
According to whom?
A collapsed lung is usually an acute condition not a slow onset one :-)

Remember that each remedy has an average of about 10,000 indications
and that you are choosing a smattering of a minority of them to use
for first aid. Calc-phos for example has around 11,800 documented
rubrics - namely that number of symptoms which it can help IF the
symptoms match the remedy.
So choosing 2 or 3 to know about, does not mean it lacks the other
11, 797 areas of activity:-)
Probably many people have done so over the years, in that Calc-p has
a large number of documented appropriate respiratory rubrics - just
not partial lung collapse as such. The SYMPTOMS of it are indeed
there in Calc-p.
Whether that is a valid peculiar symptom or not, I would not expect
to see it, and would choose a remedy on the patient's actual symptoms
and how well they fit *within* the remedy picture. Otherwise you will
miss the majority of good places to use the remedy.
I never look for a symptom - that is backwards. One starts with the
symptoms seen. Only those. Always only those.
:-)

Namaste,
Irene

Re: first aid remedies

Post by Hart Matthews »

Thanks for all the feedback, folks -

Everything that has been said is right on the money. The only problem is that I have limited room to carry remedies (a full remedy cabinet won't fit in my backpack!).

I should have made myself clearer. What I'm asking about is a *trauma kit*, a small collection of remedies to use in emergencies until the victim can be transported or a more extensive remedy selection can be accessed. I thought that asking about a "first-aid kit" would make that clear. Sorry for the confusion.

So, because I'm only carrying 40 remedies, I need to choose only the *most commonly used* emergency remedies. By definition, most of them will be specifics and polycrests.

In my case, that will not include a remedy for slow-healing fractures unless I decide to travel with somebody who has one. On the other hand, if someone breaks a leg or punctures a lung on the trip, Bryonia could be extremely useful.

Nor will I carry Androc or Elaps unless I happen to be traveling in an area where there are scorpions or coral snakes. I'll have other remedies for bites and stings. Sure, someone might suffer an eye injury that shows all the characteristics of Androc, and I'll be wishing I had it, but I'll still have Acon, Ruta, Staph and Symph in my kit until I can get the patient better care (Androc!). In my first-aid kit, I'm much more likely to need a common head trauma remedy like Op (knock on wood not).

Don't get me wrong! I've got Elaps and Androc and Calc-p in my office, and if a client comes in with an old fracture that's not healing, Calc-p will be in the differential. And I won't prescribe it unless it fits the case, I promise.

So that's why I asked whether anyone on the list had actually used Calc-p for atelectasis. In the literature I have, it is ONLY listed by Andre Saine in his repertory additions, nowhere else that I can find. But I thought, since Saine is a contemporary homeopath, that perhaps this was a recent discovery and that someone here might say, "That's the best remedy ever for a collapsed lung! You should definitely carry it!"

Thanks again to everybody who responded -

Kind regards,
Hart Matthews
