Acute care question - for my Mom - fractured pelvis
Dear friends, your advice would be greatly appreciated.
Mom fell and fractured her pelvis and wrist this morning. I gave one
aconite and rescue remedy before paramedics arrived and was just
about to give her arnica when they made it very clear they would not
touch her if I gave her anything. So had to wait until we returned
home from hospital this afternoon to start arnica. Extreme hip/back
pain (for which she took Percocet in hospital) – worse for any
movement. Wrist looked terrible until arnica and started looking
very good within 30 minutes – started at 6c and moved to 30c. Hip
and back still hurt terribly (not only the fall but the treatment at
hospital like a sack of potatoes). She is calm and relatively
comfortable for now – but don't know what it will be like when she
needs to get up – or even turn. Transport home was via stretcher –
they never sat her up or tried to get her to stand at the hospital –
just sent her home. Osteo appointment is not until Monday afternoon –
no instructions from anyone until then – even though I asked
repeatedly for care/movement instructions. They only gave pain med
and no care instructions. Don't know if I should be moving her or
letting her stay quiet. I have encouraged modest toe wiggling but
nothing more just yet. I understand the fractured pelvis is
exceptionally painful under any circumstances, but she also has old
vertebral fractures – which gave her pain and uneven gait before
this.
Care and remedy ideas/experiences very much appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Re: Acute care question - for my Mom - fractured pelvis
Hi Donna,
This is so hard to answer without knowing the location and extent of the fracture - any advice we give could be very inappropriate except to say if she stays in the one position she is at grave risk of pressure ulcers which could take longer to heal than the fracture.
I would contact the hospital again, or your local doctor who should be able to contact them on your behalf, to find out exactly what she should and shouldn't do in relation to the fracture.
Bryonia, of course, is one remedy to consider in relation to fracture pain worse for movement.
Hope the give you information as soon as possible - this is very poor care.

Fran, yes, thank youm, it is a very frustrating position to be in. I
have no information abut the extent - the radiologist was not
available. The doctors and nurses at the hospital would provide NO
information. The GP is away for the weekend. The osteo will not
give advice before seeing her and will not see her until next week.
Just feel so helpless. Must simply rely on basic acute care
approach. I know it is never wise to treat family - but in this case -
I am it.
Thanks for answering so quickly.

You mentioned GP - which is a UK term - so if in UK try phoning NHS Direct and see what they suggest.

Distressing story. In addition to Fran's advice maybe observe state. Frantic with pain ??chamomilla, wanting hand held or salty things Phos 30c, Dictatorial > Lyco. I would think just your company and care will be invaluable.
My mantra is that a homeopath should be part of every Health Care team but even as a GP have had similar responses. I suppose everyone fears being blamed if anything adverse occurs. Such is our system at the moment
A locum Dr , presuming there is one ,could maybe ring Cas and find extent of pathology , Best Wishes, Jean

Would it be appropriate to give symphytum, and/or to take as much case
as you can get and choose the best-indicated "broken bone remedy",
taking into account her mood and generals--and then gauge
appropriateness of the remedy by whether or not it makes her feel
better, both with regard to the pain and also otherwise? (Which,
however, doesn't answer the question of what movement she should or
should not do--incredible that they didn't tell you that!!)

Ruminating on this and the dangers of giving advice without observing vitality , pulse, colour and other indices. If distress severe can always call ambulance again and get more help local hospital if can not manage at home, Jean

Lie her with the sacrum on a well padded surface
Do not move her if painful
Give her pain meds and fluids
Do respiratory exercises and to pervent thrombosis
Watch for blood in urine

Re: Acute care question - for my Mom - fractured pelvis
Donna,
It doesn't matter if her GP is away for the weekend, there has to be someone covering his patients until he is back on call on Monday. That said, you need to make a lot of noise to get the information you need to care for her at home, either with the ER where she was treated or with the GP on call. Did the ER give you a fracture pan so she would not have to get out of bed to go to the bathroom ? Personally I would call the doc on call for the GP and insist on instructions, I would also call the hospital and ask to speak to the nursing supervisor. The care you and your Mom didn't receive is shameful and I would kick and scream until you got the help you need to adequately care for her. Hospitals in the US are fearful of being reported to JCAHO for lack of care, you can always mention them to have people take you seriously.
The pelvic fractures I have seen have been in the hospital and on strict bed-rest with pain meds as needed. Jeans suggestion to call the ambulance a second time is also a way to go if you get no help over the phone. You can refuse to have her sent back home once in the ER, she can't take care of herself at home and you have the right to refuse to care for her without adequate equipment and instruction.

Re: Acute care question - for my Mom - fractured pelvis
my one experiene with such an accident was with a cat who was either hit by a vehicle or
an object. vet diagnosed a broken pelvis and said nothing to do but keep him still an wait.
i did the arnica 30c 3x/1hour which brought him out of the trauma state he was in. then began
symph 30c daily. vet said he wouldn't be moving for a couple of months. he as hopping
across the lawn on day 8! i have used this combo with broken bones very successfully on
several occasions.
but as others have noted, the case should be taken and not treated by rote.
