This came through on another list, and seems to be a unique situation to Autism, as a couple other mothers agreed that they'd experienced the same thing. I'm wondering if there is a "Better with motion/driving" type of rubric that this would fall under? I know there are better ascending/descending... but don't remember anything with riding in a car...vs. stopping, slowing down - causing screaming fits.
Personally, I can't imagine trying to drive in a situation like this. I'd be crazy!

Anyone have insight? This isn't a client, nor even in close proximity, but as several other mothers said they'd had their autistic children respond the same way, I'm thinking it may be helpful to know.

Another issue we are having with ____ that is really very disturbing is
that when we are in the car - my son screams like someone is trying to
pull off his toenails. He is okay as long as the car is moving, but
if we have to slow down and stop for any reason - he goes completely
ballistic. I've tried music and movies and other things to try to
distract him, but as soon as he feels my foot on the brake - he goes
ballistic. Again - does anyone have any suggestions or any thoughts
on just why he may be reacting this way in the car - this has been
going on for almost a year.
