canine question

Post by d_rona2000 »

Is there a rubric for excessive licking? I know there could be a
variety of reasons (for comfort, out of anxiety, need for salt,
etc.). in this case, there seems to be an oral fixation. He finds a
stuffed toy with an appropriate size limb or nose and sucks on in for
up to an hour. The licking of hands, feet, pant legs, etc. is not
constant - but when it gets started it is compulsive, intense and
overwhelming to him - nothing short of removing to another room will
stop it. These issues are not constant - and almost turn on and turn
off at specific hours in the day (early evening). For background -
male, 1.5 years old, small breed, home made diet, overall good
health.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Dona
Have you tried Rescue? In the water he drinks. Could also be an itch. But Rescue will calm him down.

Hi Donna,
I think I would try to evaluate it in context of the rest of his case.
What does it feel / seem like when he does it; can you put it into a
human metaphor? I mean, e.g. is it like compulsive attention seeking,
or trying to please (anxious; desires affection?)? Or like a
self-stimulating behavior, or maybe just "Compulsive behavior" or
"Automatic acts"? Does it seem to calm him when he's nervous, and what
starts it off, etc.? Is it specifically time-related, or is there
maybe any type of activity or event that *also* happens at that time?

Yes, I did try to work on it from the point of view of compulsive
behavior - it does not appear to be aimed at pleasing or attention
seeking. It also does not appear to be event driven as you might
expect for a 'nervous' reaction - i.e. when an alarm goes off or
nearby dogs start to bark. There is no clear trigger for the
behavior - but the reaction is clear - the obscessive licking or
sucking on a stuffed animal. If I had only seen it once, I would
assume it was self calming behavior - but seeing it repeated - it
does not appear to actually calm him - it just goes on and on until
fatigue or human intervention ends the session. Under most
circumstance he would not be called a 'nervous' individual, but he
has a very low threshold for reaction to stimuli.

Thank you for the ideas and input.

Over time we have tried several Bach Flower remedies, as well as DAP
(dog appeasing pharomone) which don't seem to have any influence on
this behavior. By itch - do you mean a skin irritation or an
irritation in his mouth?

The thing I'd look at next is, what remedies might you be thinking of
*aside* from that behavior?

It goes along with some constitutional types:-)
Try to repertorize the innate constitutional type of the dog and I
suggest a few doses of that, at 200C.

SUggest: ALSO check the food, treats ands supplements for toxins.
They (eg alfalfa) can cause this kind of hyperesthesia type response.

Namaste,
