Knowing the MM viz repertorizing

Post by Luise Kunkle »

Hi All,

all through the thread about "how to study" I had been wodering how
much knowledge of the remedies is worth as compared to knowing how to
rep. etc - except for acute cases, where there is no time for
repertorization.

This wondering also included the methods explained by Chris et al -
i.e. those leading to a deeper understanding of the remedy, wondering
whether there is in any remedy anything to understand.

I was not going to voice such "wild speculations", but, as it
often is the case, something happened just the last few days that made
me wonder whether they are all that wild after all.

I came across a symptom in a youngish man (well mid-thirties which to
me is young:-) ) whom I have been treating for decades off and on. He
is a friend and actually pretty healthy.

However, he called me and gave me a sx which is not so healthy and srp
in pretty healthy person: off and on at night he will wake up and be
drenchend with sweat.

Considering that as a child he did have Mercury symptoms in acutes and
that he also has often mentioned that he easily and heavily sweats
during exercise, of course mercury came to mind.

The symptoms seem to fit well into what we "know" of Mercury:
night aggr, easy and profound sweating. BUT: Mercury does not have
sweating during sleep, never mind profound sweating during sleep! (Not
according to Kent, not according to Phatak.) The guiding symptoms have
it - in highest degree in the sleep paragraph. But one wonders what
Hering meant with it, since in Knerr it is only listed in the fever
rubric - and in the Encyclopedia nightly seat or during sleep is also
only is listed with fever.

Since actually sweating in fever is quite a different pair of boots
from general sweating (in fever it plays a specific part) I wonder
whether we can figure that Mercury would be in any way similar to
"profould outbreaks of sweat during sleep)

Researching further, even the symptom: easy sweat during exercise
seems doubtful. Hering again mentions it - but only in very low degree
- in the Encyclopedia I do not find that sx. anywhere for
Mercurius.

Interesting, isn't it?

Regards

Luise

Hi Luise,

Complete 2008 does show it (ascribed to Kent):

Perspiration; PROFUSE; SLEEP; During (21) : acon., aral., camph.,
carb-an., Chin., chin-s., con., coriand., dulc., hyos., merc., mur-ac.,
nat-c., olea, Op., ozone, Phos., podo., syc-co., Thuj., til.

So perhaps that's your answer after all?
But it does happen often enough that a prominent symptom of a case
isn't in the rep--sometimes not there *at all*, and sometimes not there
in connection with the (apparently or in fact) needed remedy. So
again, just as we can't *choose* a remedy based on any single symptom
(well only if we're desperate :-) ), we also shouldn't *eliminate* a
remedy based only on *absence* (either in the case or in the rep) of
any single symptom--sometimes you have to go by the overall picture,
even if single symptoms are "missing" or "excess"!

Hi, Luise.

I find that an overall deep understanding of the core remedy picture is
often essential in choosing the correct remedy. When the picture falls into
place, with the symptom picture fitting closely with the remedy totality,
you've got the simillimum. One needs a synthetic understanding (an overall
picture, not just a disjointed set of symptoms) of the case and the remedy
to put them together reliably. It's more complex than "keynotes."

Hi Shannon,
Well, in the original Kent (book) it is not.

camph., carb-an.,> Chin., chin-s., nat-c., Op., Phos., podo., Thuj.,
This is not my point.

It is that "easy sweat" and "night aggr", would IMO be a
characteristic running through the remedy. The question is: is Mercury
indicatedbecause of thischaracteristic? It should, shouldn't it?

Hi Luise-
Knerr's repertory has this symptom. In Knerr you should look under
Sleep and not under Fever.

During Sleep- sweating

there are tons of remedies and one of them is Merc in high ranks.

In the same rubric it is also under sub-rubrics - During sleep - non-
ameliorating sweat and under "rheumatic patients with neuralgia -
Merc.

For some states - Sleep, Convulsions etc. Knerr has specific Before,
During and After conditions..
we also shouldn't *eliminate* a
of
picture,
Very true and this is how we could treat some of the pathologies
even when they do not appear in the repertories or in provings...
the indications come from other symptoms... that is why the remedy
does not have to cover ALL the symptoms of the case

Hi H.,
Yes - I did see that - and also it is in Hering under sleep, where
Knerr probably got it.

And just now Ifound whatmaybethesolution to themystery (which itwasfor
me)

The symptom is in the MM Pura, but not in Allen's Encyclopedia. So
Hering probably went to the MM Pura for his GS and Kent etc. to the
encyclopedia.

Still interesting - makes me include Knerr in my repertorization.

It shouldbe in the TTB also -will haveto check that.

;-) You mean his rep? So I gathered. That's why I offered it.
Since he's listed as the source, it was presumably in his writing, not
in his rep.

You mean in absence of other supporting symptoms? There are many
remedies that have both of those characteristics, and some for whom
"easy perspiration" is even more strongly characteristic (e.g. Merc is
listed only as (2) for it, whereas Nat-c, Bry, Sep, Sulph are all 4,
and there are a handful of 3s and other 2s...) So it's a nice
confirmatory *if* the rest of the case also looks like Merc--at least
that's what I'd say.
