Re: nursing baby and remedy reaction
I just did a follow-up with a Mum who has a nursing baby. I prescribed
Syphilinum 200 for the Mum which she repeated after two weeks. Each
time she took the remedy (which is working brilliantly for her), her
baby had a strange stool within a day or two of her taking the remedy.
His stool, which is usually normal baby stool, was very black, and
absolutely covered with mucous -- she said it was like someone had
blown their nose on it. I'm not sure what to make of this. Any comments?
Thanks,
Beth

May the baby have a coryza?

The baby is not my patient, but after hearing this report, I
questioned the mother closely to see if the baby had any other mucous
issues and the answer was "NO".

nursing baby and remedy reaction
Hi Beth,
I've lost track of the prior post, but is this about the baby who had
black, mucusy stools after his mother took her doses? If so, my
thought was--this actually sounds like a wonderful "discharge"
reaction, doesn't it? Assuming the baby didn't/doesn't appear unwell
in any way, it sounds to me like a possibly good thing?? Tho I don't
know why a baby would have gunky intestines, unless young enough to
still have some meconium??

Re: nursing baby and remedy reaction
just pulling an idea from the air, this raises a question of whether
the baby was ridding itself of the effect(s) from the mother.
i recall a case of a yound boy, age 11, whose teeth all came in
rotted. it seemed that he had absorbed some the mother's stress
when in utero. so, in that vein, could this baby be ridding itself
of some energy absorbed from the mother? the remedy would
be working on the infant via the breast milk.

Re: nursing baby and remedy reaction
Shannon and Tanya -- Thanks for your responses. I told the mother who
was concerned that my instinct was that the baby probably needed to
get rid of whatever made that stool all covered with mucous, but
didn't let her know that I was confused myself. The remedy the Mum is
taking is Syphilinum and I looked to see if this could be a proving
symptom, but I found nothing to indicate this. Everything we know from
the philosophical literature makes us think that what's curative for
the Mum will be curative for the baby, but I was a bit surprised by
this reaction. I'm hesitant to go up in potency at this point, which I
would have done if the baby weren't involved.

Re: nursing baby and remedy reaction
Hi Beth,
In addition to the "what's curative for the mum" angle, I'd also think
that black stool covered in mucus is better out than in!! But maybe
the main thing I'd go by is the *rest* of what's happening with the
baby. Does s/he seem well, appropriate to the age? (How old is s/he,
and how has s/he done so far?) Were there any changes after that
elimination (and how long ago now was it)?
of toxins that had not yet exerted much influence, but presumably
would/could have in the future. IMO the biggest thing to go by would
always be the overall state, and whether it's improving or declining,
more so than any single event or symptom. If the baby's too young for
those observations to mean much, then, well, expressing confidence as
you did seems useful to me!
If mum is at peace about it, she'll
be a better and more balanced observer of her little one, as well as a
happier camper.
Best,
Shannon

Re: nursing baby and remedy reaction
Thanks Tanya and Shannon, once again. This is a new patient, and one
who is totally new to homeopathy. Her baby is only a couple of months
old and as I said, other than asking if there were any other
indications of mucous accumulation (which there aren't) I haven't
given the baby much attention. Mum did say that the baby had become
fussy and wasn't sleeping as well since her first appointment with me
(and her taking the remedy), but, this is the age that I would think a
sleepy infant may normally start waking up and making more noise in
any case. Tanya, I think that your observation that there are a number
of syphilitic remedies in those rubrics is a good point and makes me
think that this is a curative response, rather than a proving symptom.
I'm going to let Mum roll along on the remedy for awhile. If nothing
else, helping Mum resolve some really serious issues (which are
responding well to the Syphilinum) is the best thing possible for this
baby. so, my thanks again for talking me through this -- I am
definitely feeling less concerned.
