Re: How to learn the Boenninghausen repertory and method

Post by Vera Resnick »

I highly recommend the Dimitriades books. I found they really changed the way I worked, and were especially helpful during a time when I didn't have access to a computer. Dimitriades himself was also was very helpful with any questions I had.
Initially I worked through Homeopathic Diagnosis case by case, looking for the rubrics, working on finding the remedy and figuring out treatment and then looking at how Dimitriades resolved the case. His recommendation then was to go through the repertory rubric by rubric, checking the footnotes (which are extensive and very pedantic but very worthwhile), getting used to the structure of the repertory - I'm still working on that!.
I've found it especially helpful in acutes. The main drawback for me is that remedies such as Gels and Hypericum aren't in this repertory. Recently I had an acute case which clearly called for hypericum so I went on my prior knowledge knowing that the Boeninghausen Repertory wouldn't help me.
Although Dimitriades' repertory is much easier to use and has really unlocked the method for me - I still prefer the remedy relationship section in the Allen edition of the Therapeutic Pocket Book, which has helped me more - maybe I don't understand quite how to use the remedy relationship section in the Dimitriades repertory.
Enjoy!

Hi Chris,

I may have misunderstood something - but the TTB is available in
English, Allen's translation. I have a Jain edition. This also
contains the introduction, where v. B. explains how to use it.

Dear Vera and Chris,

Vera, did you use the Dimitriades rep right from the beginning? It seems if he is going to weed out the added remedies from the mysterious student (Dunham), then I should wait for him to publish the second edition of the his rep. It is an expensive book. Anyone have any idea of how long he is planning to take to publish the next edition? Chris, to follow his 50 cases is it going to be necessary for me to use his rep? I was thinking of first just using the Indian Allen edition or the Radar Boenninghausen rep. I won't be able to check back to the German, but I will have to be constantly aware of differences in translation.

Obviously I am wading into deep waters. Figuring out how to take baby steps and not to go in the wrong direction is essential.

Thank-you so much Chris. I would have never dreamed to these difficulties in learning the method. I wonder how much it will cost to get a photocopy of the 1905 B-B. I'll ask and get back to the group. Radar is using the Bombay 1936 and Company edition. So it is problematic. The Therapeutic Pocket book is the 1846 M Ster. Coppewrath edition.

Chris, Obviously you also rely on Boger's judgment in his original B-B. Why do you find him reliable?

I am told that working with kentian reps will not work for the Boenninghausen method. Obviously there are problems within the Boenninghausen group. Do you use Phatak? How do you decide that someone is reliable. Knowing the history and who learned from who??

Best,

Dear Chris,
I guess you find that the modern digital repertories use sources that lack copywrite so they are free thus the program is cheap. Then you have sources that are not reliable. Are there any Indian editions that you find trustworthy? How about the Indian edition of Herring or Clark's encyclopedia?
It's amazing to me, but the EH does not include Herring's many volumes.
Knowing the history of these books makes a huge difference.
Best,
Ellen

Ellen, EH does have Hering’s Guiding Symptoms of Materia Medica – all the volumes are contained within the one title

Hi Ellen,

I started getting interested through using (or trying to use!) the Allen edition. I wasn't able to use it easily and couldn't use it that much in prescribing. I did use the Remedy Relationships section to confirm a remedy I'd chosen, or to look for a group of remedies to consider.

To follow the 50 cases you need the Dimitriades rep - the cases are all referenced to his rep. Each rubric has a number which is used in the case discussion. So if you're going that route you should buy both books. I haven't followed the discussion and Chris, who is really the expert here, has probably recommended Boeninghausen's Lesser Writings. Not expensive and adds clarity. Dimitriades really explains Boeninghausen's method of case analysis well with the questions he asks and the hierarchy of symptoms. I don't know when he's putting out a new rep, but the footnotes to the rep all show which remedies come from the mysterious "i-copy" so if you want to disregard them with repertorisation you can. I don't disregard them totally, but I do if they are raising the grade of a remedy without any non-i-copy backup, or any backup from other sources.

I've found it a lot of fun to prescribe using this rep and method of analysis as very often remedies come up that I would never have come to any other way, and it's like meeting old friends wearing new clothes! There is also the knowledge that whenever I prescribe a remedy that's clearly indicated from this rep, the results are instantaneous, which is enough to warm the cockles of this homeopath's heart.

Chris - when are you going to write something more "formal" on Boeninghausen! Have you done so already? I keep trying to save your posts, organize the material, but I'd love to see something in print or on a website!

Vera

I've looked it up before and couldn't find it. Now I see it.
Thanks,

How do you mean?
Everything anyone writes is automatically copyright unless they say
otherwise. It's the default to be copyright.
However information is NOT copyright.
What's copyright is the style of presentation of the information.
So anyone can use information anywhere - as long as they present it
their own way.

Namaste,
Irene

Hi Irene,
Yes you can reword others writing and that is not covered by copyright. I think Radar is using the exact texts of books that are too old to be covered by copyright laws. That's what I mean.
Best,
Ellen
