The definition of hangnail that was given (at bottom) did not fit my notion. I searched it on the internet at Answers.com and came up with the following. Important to correctly define because having a lot of them or having them often might be a useful symptom? At times in my life I have had a lot of them. Nutrient deficiency?

Hangnail: A small piece of dead skin at the side or the base of a fingernail that is partly detached from the rest of the skin.

Teresa - you are absolutely correct!!! What I described was an ingrowing nail!!
It's a while since I had one but if they got infected Hepar Sulph 30 used to sort it every time!!! I used to get them from biting the skin at the sides of my nails.

Yes, I used to get those too. There’s an old word, whitlaw, I think, for those infections beside the nail bed. Teresa (Northern VA)

Hi Rochelle
One of my patients who had this very severely on hands and feet was initially diagnosed with lichen planus. Diagnosis recently amended to psoriasis (when joint pains appeared). She had a history of nickel allergy, too.
Best remedy for nails has been mercury, though rhus tox has helped joints.
At one point some of her nails went green- a bright apple green!
No fungus ever found on biopsy.
I am still not totally convinced by diagnosis but they are finally getting better.

How interesting!! My sister in law's thumb is a blue/green!! She has it hidden under a thumb bandage!! She says it started with the stress she has been through of late that's why I want her to go back and see Francis Treuhertz!!! I don;t treat friends and family constitutionally
