Hypericum

Kings dispensatory contains uses of hypericum topically and
otherwise.
When applied to a wound or ulcer one has to consider not only the
anodyne effects of a topical treatment, but the addition of the
calcium, magnesium, sulphuric and carbonic acids contained in the
flower. These along with the properly prepared tincture (76% alcohol)
also provide a good antiseptic base allowing the healing process to
flourish. Although.....this all sounds very naturopathic not
homeopathic to me.

What is the groups knowledge of use of Hypericum in depression. What
concomitants should be present apart from injury and those detailed in
Materia Medica ?. I feel I need to know more about use of this remedy. It
is supposedly contraindicated to use with SSRIs because of accentuation of
Serotonin effect. I have never found it prominent in repertory analysis yet
people often ask about it. Thank you, Jean

Dear Jean, shock and fright can be the exciting causes of the depression
which is often accompanied with a melancholic outlook on life, rather than
an active destructive state which some depressions can move towards. There
is delusion they might fall from a height - so loss of social position, or
concern about social position can be the initial shock/fright. General
'falling' sensations throughout the body - falling of hair, heart feels as
if falling etc. Heaviness also goes with the falling. Falling = injuries.
Sense of levitation which is the opposite of falling = high and lows.

Hypericum effects the nerves - so nervousness and sensitivity is uppermost.
Very sensitive to the pain (whether emotional or physical). Makes them
irritable which can develop into rage. Crawling sensations are common, as
are pins and needles like pains. Also weakness, swellings, burning. Skin
eruptions - as if under the skin, herpes, haemorrhoids. Very sleepy, active
dreams. Talk a lot in their sleep. When awake the mind gets muddled, makes
lots of mistakes. Feel uneasy before storms.

If you have Vermeulen's Prisma, it would be a good idea to read his chapter
on Hypericum. It may give you a few ideas.

Alternatively, if we all asked very nicely, perhaps Joy could pen one of her
wonderful exposes of remedies..... (hopefully)

Thanks Joy and Rhonda for info. This charming young man with classical
depression asked about it and I felt honour bound to extend my knowledge. I
think he is Aurum though has not the heaviness I have seen with that in
past. Has worthlessness, desire for death, a lot of old grief, loves piano
playing, very, very high achiever and duty looms large. The interesting
concomitants, recurrent painful mouth ulcers, and as a sop to his
discomfort and size and poor self esteem he could take the role of being a
joker to integrate in company. Regards Jean
