Hi-
I am learning about homeopathy right now, but decided to take my daughter to a classical homeopath because I think she really needs a constitutional remedy. I took her to a physician who has been practicing nutrition and homeopathy for the past 12 years. The remedy she came up with was so far from what I possibly thought could be what she needs from my own research that I find myself doubting this practitioner. That said, I am certainly not trained in homeopathy in any real way and she has been doing this for a long time. But I am sort of looking for reassurance, I guess, or confirmation that it sounds very strange.
Basically, I have an 8 year old girl, very bright and very early in all milestones, sensitive, a little bit anxious but also very personable, outgoing, likable, and a leader among her friends. Can be very silly and is not self-conscious about her expressiveness and absurdity when she is in that mood. Tends to make friends easily. She can be boisterous and totally resistant to criticism at times (but can also be very sensitive to criticism and cry if she feels she was wrongly accused). When she knows she did something wrong, she will protest very vigorously and almost defiantly. She is an utter bookworm as well, just finished Harry Potter Number 6 in a day and a half. She devours books. So, at the same time that she can play endlessly with her brother (5 yo) for hours, a little bossily but ultimately very happily, she can also curl up with a book for hours as well.
She is very artistic and can also draw for hours. Her eye is excellent. She recently joined my husband in his photography class with all of the adults. By her second class, she was taking pictures with really excellent composition. She enjoys creating art and is very proud of her work. This is noticed by everyone who has the opportunity to see her creations, since she was 3-4 years old.
Her two major issue is gastrointestinal and attention. Her GI issues include a history of reflux as a baby, very significant, leading to oral aversion for a while. Breastfeeding was difficult because of arching, though she was never dx'd as reflux at that time and certainly never treated allopathically or otherwise. She went on to have problems of stomach aches, first presenting with hypoglycemia and hunger. This occured most before lunch and at the end of the day of school. She also tends to eat little in the am before school. Later, she developed constipation and chronic stomach aches. Her issue is, I believe, that she doesn't ever totally empty when she goes, though she moves her bowels daily. She has a tendency towards very bad breath at times, despite regular brushing and a very healthy diet with no chemical additives and lots of fruits and vegetables. She loves vegetables (avocado, artichokes, spinach, swiss chard) and meat, but abhors fat. She likes chicken, particularly crispy skin and the "dry" meat. Does not care for milk, particularly to drink, unless it is raw and fresh. Also dislikes sweet potatoes, feels that they are "too sweet."
Her other issue is poor focus. Some of this is willful -- she prefers to finish what she is doing or do what she likes rather than subjects or topics that take effort. (Who doesn't?) But she also will not apply herself to a problem, for example in math -- at first glance, she automatically will say "I don't know what to do." If pushed and led through, she typically shows that she can do it, though she tends to make sloppy errors including not checking that her answers make sense in math problems.
She is a pretty sloppy kid. She has long hair that she refuses to wear back, and wouldn't brush it if I didn't force her. Her nails are always dirty, and even though she said she would use a nail brush to clean them, she doesn't. The first time she wears shoes, they are scuffed. Every pair of pants gets holes in the knees. She gets paint on her clothes, jackets, etc.
Her fears include: the dark to an extent, concern that something is going to happen to her family, and worries about bugs in her bed after seeing a spider on a couple of occasions on the wall next to her bed.
She doesn't have many bad dreams but has dreamt about robbers taking her things or her, recurrently.
She loves animals, dogs especially.
Other characteristics:
She gets headaches, most often with lack of food.
States that she often "feels lonely" at school and wishes that she were with her family.
Tends to be hot at night, and will sometimes strip to her underwear on warm nights.
Has had a horteolum (eye inflammation) recently that took weeks to eliminate.
Recently was shown to need glasses due to a right eye that had significantly worse vision than the left.
Has very long-lasting, significant and severe reactions to mosquito bites. Long after a bite would normally resolve in anyone else, she is complaining that it itches. Often the bites will blister and "pop."
Has a history of an ear infection at 9 months that ruptured after being untreated, there was reddish tinged discharge (don't remember which ear). After 3 courses of antibiotics, it wasn't better. Finally, ped chiropractic adjustment helped and she never had another one. She did have chronic fluid with hearing loss in kindergarten for an entire winter. Never had tubes, resolved.
Probably has some allergies, but not clear to what so far.
So, the remedy this homeopath suggested was medorrhinum. She gave my daughter one dose in the office and said to come back in a month. She said that she is not the classic medorrhinum, but that she feels it will help her be more centered and less all-over-the-place. (In the homeopath's office, my daughter was all over the room, looking at everything, and started leafing through and reading Roger Morrison's Book that was rather worn and well-used, next to this practitioner).
I had really been thinking Sulfur. She said maybe, but not right now.
Any thoughts? I know it is a lot to throw out there, but it's hard for me to place trust in another pracitioner, being one myself, especially when the remedy sounds nothing like my child.
Thanks--
Maya
question about constitutional remedy-long
Re: question about constitutional remedy-long
Dear Maya
Please trust your homeopath. A dose of Medorrhinum - which is a nosode - maybe a very good first prescription for her. Yes I can see Sulphur but can also see lots of other remedies. Lets see how she is in a month when she goes back.

Re: question about constitutional remedy-long
Hi, Maya,
Would it be possible to ask the homeopath to share with you the logic s/he followed in selecting the remedy, since you're interested in homeopathy? Might be a learning opportunity, plus a chance to get a better handle on whether this homeopath is someone with whom you'll be able to work comfortably.
