help for an old itchy dog

Post by lynnpax »

Dear homeopaths,

My rottie/chow/pit mix, Friar Tuck (he is portly & black like he is
wearing a dk robe & he likes to protect me), has systemic yeast that
is driving him crazy with itching, worse on the left side.

He is scratching and biting himself raw. He is between 11 to 13 yrs
old and had 2 broken legs and a purulent venereal cauliflower tumor
on his penis when I rescued him 8 yrs ago. He was given thuja and the
tumor was surgically removed.

On the streets in Queens, NYC he was know as ¡§Mr Bones¡¨ because he
was starving so, but he put on weight quickly ¡V a spare tire around
his middle (even when he loses weight he retains this fat on his
belly) and a wide build when getting regular meals.

He is a natural guard dog because of his breeds and loves to guard
the dog run & me (when we are out late) and is aggressive to other
large dogs. On the other hand he is very fearful:
Mind; FEAR; general; driving him from place to place (68)
Mind; FEAR; general; escape, with desire to (10)
Mind; HIDE, desire to; fear, from (5)
Mind; FEAR; general; thunderstorm, of (34)
Mind; FEAR; general; lightning, of (7)
Mind; FEAR; general; tremulous (40)
Mind; FEAR; general; noise, from; sudden, of (3)

There is no consoling him when he is in a fearful state & I have seen
him climb on top of the back of the sofa (!?!), trembling during a
thunderstorm. Also he wants to be on top of my head during a storm
and has cut my cornea twice stepping on my face while I was sleeping
when a storm started in the middle of the night. (He is a ¡§momma¡¦s
boy¡¨, loves to be coddled & doesn¡¦t mind being omega in the pack.)

Over the years I have given him acon and all of the fearful remedies
to no avail. He witnessed a member of our ¡§pack¡¨ be put down in our
living room a yr ago (by a female vet and a female vet tech) and now
goes into a fear state when 2 women come to the apt (I will never let
another of my dogs witness this again because of this experience ¡V I
just didn¡¦t knowƒ¼)

Twice during the years he presented with an inability to urinate.
Thuja healed that ¡V there was a splat of a bloody cheesy substance
then an easy flow again.

Last yr he presented w/ large scabs w/moisture underneath on his
lower abdomen & thighs which disappeared after the employment of ars
(he was also very thirsty.)

Shortly after the ars he got a skin tag in the area the scabs had
been and then a few months later an angry periorbital inflammation on
his left eye appeared (it eventually went to the bottom of the right
eye.) Eyes; ERUPTIONS; eczema; lids (20)

A hom vet said she thought he had scabies (no skin scraping was
done). Because no one else caught the mange, I guessed he possibly
had demodex when young and the ars had uncovered that layer.

After treatment w/sulph the inflammation went away but he is now left
with the yeast infection. (he even smells like yeast) he also has:
Extremity Pain; GENERAL; motion; agg.; beginning of (29)
Extremity Pain; GENERAL; weather; wet; agg. (33)
Skin; ERUPTIONS; eczema; rheumatic, gouty persons, in (7) (I must be
careful not to give him too much organ meat as this makes it harder
for him to move. I suspect that he is gouty but am not certain.)

He no longer bites his skin till it bleeds but now till it is raw.
The dead scarred dark/blackish tissue oozes a clear moisture. Under
his arms scabs/crusts form
Skin; ERUPTIONS; suppurating (76)
Extremities; ERUPTIONS; scabs; upper limbs (22)

He is agg by eating (no matter what he eats.) I am now giving him raw
meaty bones in the AM & cooked veggies in meat broth with a small
amount of meat in the PM.
Generalities; EATING; agg.; after; long after eating (14)
He also agg when fasting.

Of coarse his regular vet, who just did a scraping, wants to put
Friar Tuck on antibiotic (a possible side effect of this is yeast
infections.)

I have used psor, petr, calc and sep which all seemed to help & he
does seem to be getting better very slowly (I am not certain of this ¡V
it just might be my wanting it so ¡V but he is still extremely itchy
& fearful and spring thunder storms are about to begin again ¡V no
sleep for me.)

I recently had a nightmare about Friar Tuck. In my dream I was
walking him but instead of his leash I held him with a beautiful,
wide black satin ribbon which was elastic so that I could not pull
him out of the way of the street sweeper that was coming toward him.
And he didn¡¦t seem to want to get out of the way of impending doom!
When finally seeing him under the truck I awoke...

I need help to solve this conundrum and give him some ease.

A few thoughts:
1- Finding the similmum besides calc (not recommended repeating in
the elderly even if it helps - it did.)
2 - giving him monilia LM till I find the correct similimum (&
possibly beyond.)
3 - Using a topical cream such as Florasone Cream (Cardiospermum)
from Boericke and Tafel
4 - Giving him a probiotic (would giving him kefir be good?) Do dogs
need different digestive bacteria than humans?
5 ¡V Is there a vitamin (zinc?) or mineral that might help him?

Does anyone have any experience with this, ideas or suggestions?
I would really appreciate it right now (& so would poor Friar Tuck.)

Sincerely,
Lynn, NYC

I am having trouble finding the remedy monilia which I would like to
get in an LM.
Does anyone know where I can find it?

Thanks,
Lynn

PS. I forgot to mention Friar Tuck's ear involvement. Although he is
not shaking his head, both ears are inflamed and feel hot at times.

Hi,
My suggestion:
This is an involved case - needs thorough work-up IMO by a vethom
to suggest remedy, and supplements.
It's not something one can answer off the cuff, except a few small
aspects perhaps, not the main one:

Diet:
Make it high protein but VERY low carb - practically no carbs to
starve the yeast. (do not feed carb-laden treats; use meat as treats)
Make it anti-inflammatory (no starch, no seed oils seeds, no canola
or saturated fat or trans fat.)
Use lean meat, trim fat and replace fats with extra virgin olive oil
and fish oil.
Make SURE there are no canine toxins in any food, supplements, or
treats (Alfalfa, garlic, herbs, broccoli, onion, yucca etc )

Gut health is essential to carnivores:
Bifidus bacteria probiotic (not dairy types like acidophilus)
Rice bran for the bifidus to eat.
PABA to kickstart the bifidus (which makes their own after a time)

If you bath him, use a special shampoo like Biogroom sensitive.
Try a spray of remedy in water to soothe skin. (Hypericum/calendula
plus Bach crab apple all in water in a plant mister - sometimes
helps, but you need a matched remedy for emotional and physical issues.)

Namaste,
Irene
