Autism: Amino acid DMG helps in 42 per cent of cases

Children with autism can be helped by taking the amino acid DMG (dimethylglycine), a major new study has confirmed. The benefits of the supplement especially for people with mental problems have been known for years, but the evidence has either been anecdotal or the studies have been too small to interest other researchers.

The new study, organised by the Autism Research Institute, recruited 5,367 autistic children and 42 per cent of them reported major improvements in their condition after taking the supplement.

According to teachers and parents, the children who responded positively to DMG had improved verbal communication, better social interaction, better eye contact, improved affection, a reduction in seizures and improved sleep patterns.

One of DMG’s long-time advocates, Dr Roger V Kendall, says that it helps the neurological system and can also modulate the immune system. It acts as a methyl donor, and methylation activates neural pathways that affect behaviour.

He recommends one to four 125 mg DMG tablets per day for an autistic child, and it should be taken with 800 micrograms of folic acid. DMG can also be found naturally in liver, and in beans, seeds and grains.

Hi Didi,

I know your email is a response to another one and that you are not saying that this is the way to go with children with autism but for those who may not know otherwise, I want to point out that 42 % is a very poor figure compared to good homeopathic treatment. Parents can do better than this!

I have a over 100 Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) children on my books at the present and see new ones weekly - a shocking thing at this was unheard of in the past. Parents bring them in for homeopathic treatment because tghe word spreads that it gives results.

I only have about 2 children I can think of who have not improved with homeopathic treatment and I am sure even these cases could have been helped if I had recognised the remedy and if the parents had persevered a little longer (one only had one appointment).

Some of these children are completely clear of symptoms and others are improving.

One of the reasons children with autism respond so well and are fairly easy to treat compared to adults with chronic disease is that they are in an uncompensated state with their autism (even if their behaviour has been modified with the behavioural therapies it is still robotic or wooden) and so not much is hidden. They also usually still have strong vitality to work with.

I have attached a ink to an article I wrote on this issue - Reversing Autism - that was published in December's issue of Similia, the journal of the Australian Homeopathic Association.

http://homeopathy4autism.com/

It may encourage parents trying to help their autistic child to seek homeopathic treatment. It looks in detail at 3 cases of autism, one of which was doing extensive biomed treatments, the other two were not. Each case had a different pace of improvement and parent reports are included. They show a cross-section of results that can be expected with homeopathic treatment - one is fantastic, the other average, and the third slow but still making gains. The article also has 8 other snapshot cases included.

I have thrown the article up quickly so please overlook any poor formatting - I will fix things as I can get around to them :-)

Hope this info helps - we can do a lot better than 42%!!!

Dear Fran!!

Thanks for your posting. Certainly we can do better than 42%!!!!!!!!!!!! I just happened on the article at the same time that Lucy posted her questions.

Question: would the supplements suggested in that article assist in homeopathic treatment? Maybe get your %age of success up even higher?

Hi Didi,

Didi Ananda Rucira wrote:
Always an interesting question and from my point of view, maybe, maybe not.

The big problem is that once other supplements and interventions are introduced our job becomes harder - the supplements are given to change or suppress symptoms. They alter the very symptoms we depend on for making good prescriptions.

Most times they just prop up or support the underlying imbalance rather than truly correct it. They may improve symptoms but do not remove the imbalance that allowed the problem or damage to occur in the first place. They cannot get down to that bioenergetic level to repair the damage there. This is a little like spraying the flyspray to get rid of the flies but not removing the garbage that attracted them in the first place - there is still something rotten going on.

Now if you had a child with autism and nothing better to offer, yes, these supplements are certainly better than nothing but there may be a tradeoff. For example, they are not fixing the problem and over the long term mayin fact be replacing it with another. I do not know much about DMG but there are still concerns that folic acid supplementation, for example, that is normally considered quite safe, may cause a raft of problems. See the following link for a summary:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7069077.stm

Does this mean I ask parents to stop everything during homeopathic treatment? Many of them are throwing everything, including the kitchen sink at their child's autism. No. Even though it can be more difficult to prescribe, it is best to change nothing at the commencement of treatment so it can be clearly seen what the homeopathic intervention has done - then changes can be requested.

Also, and this will be discussed more fully in part 2 of the article (once written), once homeopathy has moved the child to a better state of health and these supplements are no longer needed, they can have aggravating and harmful effects in their own right. I have seen this in many instances this is one of the reasons I am not a practitioner who tries to "support" my homeopathic treatment with other things - I have either got the remedy right or I haven't and I work from that level. I should imagine it would be very easy to be lulled into second best prescriptions for the child when using supportive treatment because there is at least the appearance that things are getting better when in fact they may only be being palliated or suppressed. When I can clearly see the good, the bad, and the ugly of my treatment, I can look again and try to make a better prescription if needed.

Hope it makes sense.

We used DMG before we found homeopathy and we definitely saw good improvements. However it was not a cure nor, as Fran so aptly expressed, did it address the underlying issue. Also, for those who do choose to use it, it can cause serious hyperactive and aggressive behaviors when first introduced - especially in those with methylation problems (which are most). For some it will balance out and for others, if they cannot tolerate it, it is suggested they use TMG.
Once the right remedy was found for my son, he no longer needed it. It was a crutch in my eyes.
I have seen the same thing happen with children who are improving on their remedy. I second what Fran has witnessed. It has turned out more often than not the supplements are causing some of the behaviors and once removed, the improvement from the remedy just increases. I have found any supplements with citrate to be troublesome which can be tied back to the corn and yeast issue.
I have only as yet taken a handful of autism cases but all have made significant progress with classical 5th & 6th prescribing. One has just been re-tested and no longer qualifies for a diagnosis of any kind. Hooray!
FWIW!
Truly,
Erica
