Tortoise

Geochelone sulcata

Proving Methodology

A proving of Geochelone sulcata was performed in Phoenix Arizona at the American Medical College of Homeopathy in the fall of 2006. The proving was conducted by the Society for the Establishment of Research in Classical Homeopathy (SERCH). This was a full Hahnemannian proving.

Eighteen subjects (provers) began taking Geochelone sulcata 30C on September 1, 2006. The ages of the provers ranged between 21-65 years and they were in good health. There were three male provers and fifteen female provers. Generally those patients who were on allopathic medication or who had significant health problems were excluded from the proving.

This proving was double-blinded. The provers, proving supervisors, proving administrator and proving coordinator all were unaware of the remedy being proven. The homeopathic medicine was selected because of its medicinal properties, symbolic significance and representative nature of desert medicines.

Each prover was assigned a proving supervisor who interviewed them prior to the onset of the proving to obtain a baseline case. This prover then attended an introductory meeting with their fellow provers prior to the start of the proving to go over basic policies and procedures and to obtain informed consent. Each prover had regular contact with their proving supervisor throughout the proving. The proving supervisors reported directly to the proving director.

Each prover took a single dosage of 30C of the assigned homeopathic medicine at bedtime. If they exhibited any symptoms in the next 24 hours they received no further homeopathic medicine. If they had no symptoms, they repeated the homeopathic medicine 24 hours later. Each prover received a maximum of seven doses of the 30C potency. A dosage consisted of 10-12 pellets of the chosen homeopathic medicine.

Participants journaled the symptoms over the space of the next month. Additionally the supervisors kept a separate journal from the daily interaction with their provers. Informed consent was obtained from each participant.

Symptoms were reviewed in an exit group meeting one month later, which was videotaped. Journals (both of the provers and supervisors) were reviewed separately. Any participant who had residual symptoms, or improvement, following the one-month interval was followed subsequently until the symptom resolved or was permanently cured (up to six months).

The specimen was obtained from a captive animal living in Phoenix, Arizona (see cover picture). The animal was born on August 2000. It has been in good health. The specimen was collected on April 20, 2005 at 11:10AM. It was triturated using standard Hahnemannian methods. The remedy was prepared from the shell layers. The animal was not harmed in obtaining the specimen. It is a female named Pokey and has been in excellent health.

The remedy was then prepared at the American Medical College of Homeopathy. The remedy was then potentized to a 30C potency using standard potentization methods (100% ethyl alcohol was used with 30 sucussions per dilution). The preparation of the substance was videotaped and examined for correlation with the proving symptoms (see Appendix A).

The remedy is available from the Hahnemann Pharmacy and the Helios Pharmacy. The name given to the remedy is Geochelone sulcata (Geo-s).
Natural History
Name

Geochelone sulcata is most commonly known as the African Sulcata Tortoise. It is also known as the African Spurred Tortoise or African Furrowed Tortoise. It is the world's third largest tortoise after the Galapagos Tortoise (Geochelone elephantopus of the Galapagos Islands) and Aldabra Tortoise (Geochelone giganta of the Seychelles Islands). Geochelone sulcata is the largest tortoise not found on an island.

Tortoises

The tortoises comprise the family Testudinidae. This consists of 39 species in 10 genera. A tortoise is a land-dwelling reptile. As with its aquatic cousins, the turtle and the terrapin, the tortoise is shielded from predators by a shell. The top part of the shell is called the carapace, the underside is called the plastron, and the two are connected by a bridge. The tortoise has both an endoskeleton and an exoskeleton

Tortoises are found in Asia, Europe, Africa, Oceanic Islands and the Americas. Tortoises have a long history dating back 30 million years or more and have changed little evolutionarily.

Tortoises may be distinguished from other turtle families by the following: hind legs are cylindrical and elephantine in shape; feet are short, broad and club-shaped; the carapace (upper shell) is usually high and domed with the ribs modified in alternating triangular wedges. All are terrestrial and herbivorous.
Description

In Geochelone sulcata, the carapace is tan to yellow in color in the center of each scute (the external plate or scale of the shell). Each scute is outlined by brown growth rings. The plastron (bottom shell) is light tan to yellow in color with no markings. The skin of the African Sulcata Tortoise is very thick and the legs are covered in dull, spine-like projections. The prominent spurs on the rear legs do not seem to have a function. As they age, the growth rings on each of the scutes are strongly marked. Mature males develop reverted marginal scales in the front. The gulars on the plastron (the marginal scales just under the neck) are deeply forked; the anal scutes are also deeply divided. The skin on the legs is well blended into the shell color. Their skin is very thick which may serve to reduce fluid loss through transpiration.

The sulcata is the largest of the African mainland tortoise, with specimens easily reaching 24-30 inches (60-75 cm) in carapace length and 80-110 pounds (36-50 kg). The largest on record was a male resident of the Giza Zoological Gardens (Egypt) who weighed in at 232 lb (105.5 kg) and measured 41.6 inches (104 cm) over the carapace (Flower, 1925, in Stearns). The oldest recorded specimen in captivity, also at the Giza Zoological Gardens, was 54 years of age (Hughes, 1986, in Stearns). Not only do they grow large but they also grow rapidly.

Externally, it is hard to tell males from females. Males have slightly longer, thicker tails and a more concave plastron, but otherwise appear to be similar to females.
Distribution and Habitat

Geochelone sulcata originates in the Sahel region of Africa, along the southern edge of the Sahara Desert. This 500km wide strip includes parts of Ethiopia, Sudan, Chad, Niger, Mali, southern Mauritania and Senegal. The native habitat of G. sulcata consists of arid dry savannah and semi-desert areas. Sulcatas must have areas of direct sunlight and areas of shade for cooling. Urbanization, domestic animal grazing, and desertification have disturbed much of its range. They do not tolerate damp or cold and require constant exposure to warmth and high levels of illumination.
Behavior

Geochelone sulcata does not hibernate. In the wild Sulcatas "aestivate" which means they go underground for months at a time during periods of intolerable heat and drought. Sulcatas like to burrow and they are quite good at doing so. They feel more comfortable when they can feel their environment around them. The burrows are cooler and supply enough humidity to prevent the tortoise from dehydrating during this extended period.

Males and females both can be quite aggressive, starting almost from the time they hatch. Ramming others, and attempting to flip others over, are behaviors continued by males after they reach sexual maturity (about 14 inches (35 cm) carapace length). They are very powerful and very persistent. Therefore housing more than one male in an enclosure should be avoided.

African Sulcata Tortoises like to climb. They are quite strong. Sulcatas have been known to move walls and even posts supported in concrete to get to something that interests them. They cannot swim.

Sulcatas need to roam and wander freely. They respond to bright colors. They are most active at dusk or dawn and generally bask in the morning to raise their body temperature after the chill of the night.
Diet

They are herbivores and voracious eaters. They are often described as "eating machines". They graze and forage for hours each day. They graze similarly to cows or sheep. Desert vegetation is usually coarse and of poor nutritional quality. They produce a large amount of waste. They regularly eat their own and other animals' feces.

Three of the most important factors in constructing tortoise diets are the calcium: phosphorous ratio of the food and supplements ingested, the amount and type of protein eaten, and roughage - lots and lots of roughage. Too much phosphorous or too little calcium will cause bone and shell softening and deformity, and impairs metabolism and organ function. Too much protein, and feeding the wrong kind of protein (such as vertebrates, invertebrates, and commercial mammal foods) or too much of certain proteins (legumes, soy and alfalfa hay products) will cause too rapid growth, kidney failure, shell deformities and decrease life span. Studies of the feces of wild tortoises have shown that they do not ingest much in the way of animal protein. The animal component found in the feces was no greater than the small amount of other nonfood items such as small stones, feathers, fur and lizard skin sheds: in short, whatever was in the way as they were grabbing at their plants of choice (Highfield). Necessary protein may easily, and should, be supplied by plant proteins.
Reproduction

In the wild, reproduction occurs most often right after the rainy season - September through November - but can occur anytime from June through March. Males typically become very vocal during mating. As the eggs are developing inside the female, her appetite will decrease. She will become restless as she begins to roam looking for a suitable nesting site. She may excavate several nests before she selects one. The female will dig a large nest, approximately two feet in diameter and 3-6 inches deep and deposit a clutch of eggs, 15-30 or more. She may frequently urinate into the depression. Tortoises in warmer climates that are kept outdoors for most of the year may have two clutches. After all the eggs are laid, the female will fill in the nest, covering the eggs with the soil and sand that was excavated.

The eggs incubate for about eight months. Hatchlings will emerge from the nest and will be 1½-2 inches in carapace length and weigh less than one ounce. They take 1-3 days to emerge. They are active and aggressive, ramming into almost anything kept in their enclosure.

Hatchlings may not start eating right away. Food should be offered daily until they start to feed, then every other day after they begin eating. They tend to like darker greens such as alfalfa, kale, dandelion, collards, and grasses. Multivitamins and a calcium supplement may be added to their food. Analysis of self-selected hatchling diets showed them to be composed of 4% protein, 5% fiber, and 71% carbohydrate, with 76 calories per 100 grams.

They can grow to be full sized in less then 15 years.
Adaptation

Sulcatas come from some of the Sahel, the hottest, driest area in Africa. Some regions may not get rain for years. They derive most of their moisture from their diet. To make the most of available moisture, their skin is resistant to fluid loss but, when exposed to moisture, may become highly permeable. Towards this end, they will excavate pallets or burrows in the ground to get to areas with higher moisture levels; in the wild, they may spend the hottest part of the day in these microhabitats. Burrows may average 30 inches in depth; some dig tunnel systems extending 10 feet or more underground. Sulcatas are, like most turtles and tortoises native to dry areas, extremely efficient in their use of water. A sulcata may urinate just 0.64 ml a day, significantly less than their spur-thighed cousins living in the relatively lush Mediterranean countries who may urinate 1-2 ml a day. A danger, then, in captivity is that too much water may be given or made accessible which may lead to health problems including skin and shell infections and kidney problems. When temperatures exceed 104oF (40oC), they will begin to salivate heavily, smearing the saliva on their forearms to help cool them down. They also coat themselves with mud to cool off. Their burrows also provide shelters for other animals.
Predators

Many populations of G. sulcata are rapidly disappearing, especially in Mali, Chad, Niger, and Ethiopia. In Senegal there are still limited populations in the north and northeast, but there is a lot of overgrazing and desertification here too that is wiping this tortoise out. The species is on the threatened list.
Health

Like many chelonians, sulcatas are prone to respiratory infections. Not only must the illness itself be treated, but the tortoise's environment and diet must be evaluated. Prolonged psychological stress may lead to physical illness through its effect on the immune system, thus interactions with any other tortoises with whom it may be housed must also be evaluated. Symptoms of respiratory infection include nasal discharge, watery eyes (occurs in cold weather only), loss of appetite, and lethargy. The animal will require treatment with antibiotics as well as supportive care, including warm temperatures and, in the case of nephrotoxic drugs, fluids. Severe cases may require hand - or force - feeding.
Pets

African sulcatas are popular pets. As with many tortoise pets, the animal often outlives its owners, frequently creating orphaned animals.
History

The first turtles already existed in the era of the dinosaurs, some 300 million years ago. Turtles and tortoises are the only surviving branch of the even more ancient family Anapsida, which includes groups such as the procolophonoids, millerettids and pareiasaurs. Most of the anapsids became extinct in the late Permian period, with the exception of the procolophonoids and the precursors of the testudines (turtles and tortoises).
Tortoise Mythology
Africa

Some African cultures regard the Sulcata as a mediator between men and the gods. As a result, the tortoise is often kept in villages to intercede between the Head of the village and the Ancestors. In Dogon countries today, the tortoise is kept with the village leader at all times to allow him to communicate with the village ancestors.

In Senegal, these tortoises are signs of virtue, happiness, fertility, and longevity. Therefore, it is easier to promote programs that support the conservation of the tortoise. The Senegalese respect the symbolic nature of the tortoise and are very important in helping conservationists ensure reproduction and repopulation of it.

In Nigeria, the tortoise was a symbol of the female sex organs and sexuality.
China and Japan

The tortoise represents longevity as it lives in real life for a very long time. It is one of the four most prominent beasts of China (dragon, chimera, and phoenix) and is of the water element. In Feng Shui the rear of the home is represented by the symbolic animal the Black Tortoise, signifying support for home, family life and personal relationships. If you don't have a building or structure representing the Black Tortoise behind your home you can place a symbolic tortoise there for enhanced support to this aspect of life. A tortoise at the back door or in the backyard by a pond is said to attract good fortune and many blessings.

In the Far East, shell was a symbol of heaven and the square underside was a symbol of earth. The tortoise was an animal whose magic united heaven and earth. The tortoise is a creation of nature that carries its round shell over the ground, like heaven and has a flat bottom, like earth. With a profile resembling a mountain and the turning motion of its toes, it seemed to be a depiction of heaven and earth changing constantly through the seasons.

A Japanese Fairy Tale about Urashima tells of a man who protects a tortoise from some boys who were bothering it. As a reward, the tortoise takes the man to meet the King of the Ocean. As a reward for his good deed, Urashima married the King's beautiful water sprite daughter.
Europe

In the West, early Christians didn't like tortoises and they viewed them as symbolizing evil forces during war. In Greece, tortoises were once believed to be citizens of hell.
India

Tortoises seem to possess an enviable and god-like resistance to aging, and so they came to symbolize longevity. Their like to heaven and earth made them a natural for use in divination. Tortoises are also symbol of immortality and are considered temporary dwelling places for souls making their way through a series of lives on the path to Nirvana. The tortoise is considered to be the second incarnation of the powerful god Vishnu in the Hindu religion. After a great flood, which occurs every four billion years and dissolved the earth, Vishnu transforms himself into a great tortoise. On his back, he carries a vessel in which the gods and demons mix the elements necessary to re-create the globe. After a thousand years, when the earth has been reborn, the tortoise remains in place; and on his back stands a large elephant which supports the planet. The three-tortoise stack one on top of each other represents a mother and her babies. It is good for health, protection and support for relationships.
Native American

According to some Native American tales, the Earth Diver tortoise swam to the bottom of the water that stretched across the world. He surfaced with the mud, which the creator used to make the earth. The tortoise is a shore creature using the land and the water. All shore areas are associated with doorways to the Faerie Realm. The tortoise is sometimes knows as the keeper of the doors. They were often seen as signs of fairy contact and the promise of fairy rewards. One ancient text warns its readers not to act rashly when catching tortoises and always to carry out the proper ceremony to worship them first. There are also many legends about how those who killed tortoises eventually met with misfortune.

To the Native Americans, it was associated with the lunar cycle, menstruation and the power of female energies. The tortoise symbolizes the primal mother and Mother Earth.

According to numerous news accounts the hippo and the tortoise found each other at a wildlife refuge where they were taken after being stranded by the 2004 tsunami disaster.

According to the BBC, the hippo is about one year old and was found alone and dehydrated near the Indian Ocean in Kenya. He was taken to a wildlife enclosure near Mombassa where keepers have named him Owen. He and a 100-year-old tortoise named Mzee struck up a friendship and have been partners ever since. Keepers say they are inseparable and that the tortoise has been mothering the baby hippo.
Discussion
Choosing the Remedy

Geochelone sulcata was chosen as a remedy to examine the healing qualities of an aspect of the reptilian family never previously explored. Tortoises have been well known for their healing properties and possess a rich healing lore. Geochelone sulcata in particular represents an example of a desert medicine and a further opportunity to explore the power of desert remedies.
Core Sensations

The core sensation for this proving was related to the sensation of tingling/prickling/burning as if something was coming alive. This was experienced in the head, chest, stomach and upper extremities. What was unusual was that several provers described this sensation within seconds after taking the first dosage of the remedy.
This was most strongly expressed in the stomach area. Many provers described a numbness or emptiness in this area, which was followed by a tingling prickling excitement. When this sensation was most strong it was accompanied by a feeling of anxiety and agitation.

One prover described it as follows:
The opposite of this sensation was that of numbness which was experienced by several provers, worse at night. This was primarily located in the extremities.

Other sensations noted during the proving included fullness, heaviness, burning pains, stitching pain, pressing pains and biting sensations.
Lovesickness

Several provers experienced lovesickness during the proving. The feeling was one of romantic excitement. One prover had not experienced this for many years and the other prover had never experienced this. The feelings were intense. One prover described it as originating from the stomach and associated with numbness and tingling in that region;
The opposite side of lovesickness was also seen. One prover left a marriage of long standing duration during the proving. She felt oppressed and trapped in the marriage and was longing for the love that she felt was missing in the marriage.
Core Movement/Motion

Another prominent sensation during the proving was that of compression by a circular band. This was accompanied by a hand gesture of circular tightening. Many of the provers described pressing pains in the head as if someone was pressing their finger or they had a band tightly on them. This was most problematic in one prover in the abdomen where she felt simultaneous compression and swelling/expansion at the same time. She described it as follows:
One of the disadvantages of carrying around a hard shell is that there is little room for expansion or contraction within the shell. This is particularly problematic for desert creatures where expansion and contraction is one of the main themes of desert remedies.

Other provers described it as follows:

Aching in arms like being grasped very hard (5).

Beside myself with worry about my son. Feel gripped by this. It is pressing in on me.

Felt like I wanted to crawl out of my skin. High anxiety (7).
The compression tended to be circular. One prover described it as compression of the head, like an iron helmet. Band-like constrictions around the abdomen and feet were also noted. One prover could not tolerate shoes around the feet because of the compression.

There was also an emotional component to the compression - a feeling of emotional restriction and an accompanying intolerance to this. One prover described it as follows:
Feel all tied up (10).

I feel like a caged tiger. Agitated (13).
Reptile Themes

Geochelone sulcata can be compared to other reptile remedies (see Appendix A). Reptile themes present in this remedy include constriction and compression, attack and defense, violence, conspiracy, suspicion, antagonism with himself, sexuality, loquacity, sudden unpredictable attack, fear of death, and desire to kill. There was a strong theme of killing, particularly around cutting off the head. Tortoises are particularly vulnerable in the head area.

There was a strong theme of being split and divided that came out during the proving. This is a common animal theme, which is particularly strong in the reptile family.
Desert Themes

Geochelone sulcata is an inhabitant of arid to semi-arid regions of Africa. Many desert themes were seen throughout the proving. These included water themes, distension and contraction, violence, attack and defense, photophobia, large and small, wandering, restlessness, isolation, death and dying, and excitement and hurry following a prolonged period of torpor. The presence of a strong thirst without a desire to drink is characteristic of desert remedies. Formication is also typical of desert remedies.

One desert theme that was particularly strong in this proving was that of prolonged torpor followed by hyperactive energy. This relates directly to the core sensation. In the torporous state, there was a desire for dark cave-like places (the animal spends much of its time aestivating during summer heat) and photophobia. One dream that described this:
Miasm

Miasmatic classification is difficult to do based on a single proving. However, there are suggestions of the Leprosy Miasm with suicidal tendencies, homicidal tendencies, self contempt and loathing, disgust, helplessness, hopelessness, self-torture, feeling violated and dirty and not feeling good enough. The syphilitic miasm is also a possibility.
General Characteristics

Right -sided symptoms predominated in this remedy. The remedy tended to be warm and was associated with hot flushes in several patients. In addition, there was a predominance of nighttime aggravations.

Other general characteristics included a tendency towards injuries, weight gain, swelling and lassitude.
Emotional and Mental Characteristics

Emotions were typically felt in the stomach with this remedy. Most commonly this was an empty or hollow sensation that had to be filled, accompanied by feelings of loneliness and anxiety.

The aggressivity of this remedy was particularly marked by irritability and anger. There was a strong desire to kill that came out in the dreams (this was surprising considering the placidity of the animal and its vegetarian diet). The most common descriptor of the irritability was "snappy", a characteristic commonly associated with tortoises in general.

Compassion and benevolence was seen in several provers. This involved a need to protect others primarily. This also came out in a maternal protective role with many provers having dreams of protecting babies and others. This is interesting in that the animal does not protect its young. However there is a well-known story of an African Seychelles Tortoise adopting a baby hippopotamus and protecting and sleeping with it after the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia (see end of Natural History Section).

Interestingly, slowness was not seen at all in the proving -a quality commonly associated with turtles and tortoises.
Physical Characteristics

Physical areas most targeted by this remedy included the extremities, eyes, head and stomach.

The eyes demonstrated much lachrymation and burning pains. They were often heavy and discolored red. There was profound photophobia and pressing pains, which could be accompanied by a foreign body sensation. Provers would often rub their eyes.

The stomach area experienced a lot of crampy abdominal pains. There was nausea and vomiting, worse in the morning, and an insatiable appetite. These tortoises are known for being voracious eaters. This was accompanied by distension and fullness. There was a strong thirst, particularly for cold drinks, which could be unquenchable. Anxiety was experienced in the stomach.

The extremities were the seat for many symptoms. There was much numbness and tingling. Pressure pains were noted that were particularly right-sided and in the shoulders, wrists and arms. Stiffness and swelling often accompanied. There was much itching.

Menstrual symptoms were fairly common in this proving. Menses were either late or early and coupled with a cramping dysmenorrhea. Several provers experienced a white leucorrhea. Sex drive was generally low.

Skin was often dry and there was much formication. One prover had the interesting symptom of a painful cicatrix.

Of note was that there was little in the way of respiratory symptoms elicited by the proving. This is interesting in that respiratory diseases are some of the most common forms of pathology for this animal.
Preparation of the Remedy

A video was made of the preparation of the remedy (see Appendix B). The theory is that people who prepare the remedy also briefly participate in the energy of the remedy. Although we did not include this information in the selection of proving themes and rubrics, it is interesting to note that several themes were reflected in the making of the remedy.

These included the following:
Comparisons

Geochelone sulcata can be compared to other reptile remedies (see Appendix A). In addition, there are similarities with other desert remedies.
Raw Data
Prover #1
Mind/Emotions
1. What is the remedy and what is me? Who am I anyway? Not sure who or what I am and all the facets of me. Anxiety about the remedy and will I have a supervisor who can "reel me in". I don't want to be flopping around in life so much. I am not sure that I am up for a big change at the moment (1).
2. Feeling between in my sleep-half awake and half asleep. Just being. It is OK. Almost catatonic or stuporous (1).
3. Feel more energized and making big decisions (2-3).
1. Feeling calm and detached, yet contained (3, 5, 9, 15). I've been thinking about the feeling of the soul line, the detached being, etc. It is an "ancient" feeling - like the oxygen is to the air; like I said - as if it is supposed to be and always supposed to be and has always been - almost like an "all knowingness" and a "just being". This feeling is something I always crave for - and have felt before at several times.
2. Cleaned the whole house. Felt energized. Ambitious like I can get things done (4-5).
1. Irritable and bitchy (4-5, 16-19).
2. Woke up with song in head: "Lost without a home, like a dog without a bone" (6).
3. Things aren't moving as fast as I like (10).
4. Detached from body most of the night (15).
5. Feel detached yet contained (15).
6. More sensitive to heights. Cannot get closes to the edge. Looking down is hard (14).
1. Friend and I had a conversation about having restrictions on me and telling me what to do; if he goes on a business trip he can do whatever he wants to do; when I do something he is all over it; I want him to quit putting restrictions on me; that issue came to a head. Restriction is not able to move or deep breathe; being confined; like the same feeling with the belly (8-11).
Dreams:
1. Teaching - there were four fill-in the blank questions - everything you need to know about life - and the students couldn't fill in the blanks. Feel frustrated that they did not know that and I though that I had taught them that (2).
2. Lice and parasites everywhere. Feels gross (2).
3. I was not in my body but sitting in the chair beside the bed, watching myself trying to sleep (15).
4. The past, present, future are the same; like looking through someone and seeing the soul; like looking at the child and seeing the parent and grandparent and their future children; it was a "soul line" (15).
5. Penis inside of my vagina. It was just there and felt full. No movement (8).
6. Doing paperwork and feeling frustrated with it (11).
7. Old boyfriend. I was waiting for him to enter the relationship again. He did and I was relieved (10).
General/Physical Symptoms:
1. Feeling snappy (HG of snapping fingers) and energized alternating with inability to move (1-30); each of these states lasts about two days. I move in spurts, like a burst of energy, need to move and go forward. I can do all this stuff and it is good to be moving. When I stop, I cannot move. Sudden shifts between these two states (2-30).
1. Headache in forehead, root of nose, eye - all in the bones; lasted only 30 seconds but intense (1-2).
2. Headache on top of head and forehead; like a steel cap or helmet; tight and compressed; some burning (5).
3. Extreme photophobia (2-30); eyes hurt with the light. Headache from the light. This was extreme; (even the night light in the bathroom I had to keep my eyes shut); I do like the darkness; put blackout shades in the bedroom; I could go in a cave for a while; something like that; I like it dark; or a hole; where it is dark and cool.
4. Ear pain in right ear on the mastoid point; single spot; extends to jaw as well; feels in the bone (5-30).
5. Bloated stomach. Feels like my stomach has been in the way. It feels too big and in the way. Feels bruised and sore to the touch. Bruised feeling. Fat like I am going to burst. Liver hurts. Worse laying on back. Sensation of being an upside down turtle. Like I am on my back and cannot turn over. Like I am contained in a shell. Like it is contained and bloated (6-30).
1. Heartburn on and off. Burning in stomach but more in esophagus. Not moving. Feels constricted and contained. Feels stuck and not moving (6).
2. Queasiness of the stomach. Motion sickness. Carsick several times even when driving and when coming down in the plane. Almost vomited (15).
1. Diarrhea on and off. Comes in big spurts and then done. No cramping or pain associated.
2. Cold that came on in the middle of the night between 12AM-1AM suddenly. Lasted for two weeks. Head feels clogged and congested. Post nasal drip, slight sore throat, ear pain. Worse airplane. Ears won't pop. Nose congested. Some sneezing. Nose feels full, worse root of nose. Ears are blocked and crackling. Congestion worse early AM and late evening
3. (15-20).
4. Strong thirst. Very dehydrated. Cannot get enough water. Lips are chapped and hands are dry. However keep forgetting to bring water with me. Even though I am thirsty, I have to consciously go find water. No natural inclination to bring water with me (3-30).
1. No appetite in the morning (3-30).
2. No interest in meat. Craving veggies and fruit. Feel like I have gained weight (21).
3. Almost sprained my ankle twice. (12, 20).
4. Bunions significantly worse. Burning like the bones are broken. Bruised feeling. Worse putting shoes on or feeling contained. Like pressure around the foot (25-30).
5. Worse touch, pressure or containment (2-30).
6. Restless sleep with frequent waking (6-15).
7. Kicked husband out of bed in sleep (19).
Prover #2
Mind/Emotions
1. My wife observes me as more relaxed, more fun to be around, less uptight, less driven. Went shopping and was quite tolerant of the time we spent (3).
2. Spent time this morning (7:15-7:45) watching some peculiar activities around a charitable clothes collection bin - young man peering in, skate boarding, then peering in again. Eventually a young woman popped out of the bin, skateboarded a bit, then they drove away in a red car parked alongside the collection bin. He was clearly not happy that I was observing them - but they didn't seem to be removing anything from the bin (4).
3. Was very irritated by the continual importuning of my services by a woman of 81 who is writing a book on a computer. She is perfectly capable of discovering all kinds of data on the computer through internet searches, but not of formatting pages. The problem now was that her internet connection was not working. She has taken to calling for my services every day, sometimes twice a day. We got home after a meal out to find a phone message with a quite sharp twist to it. She later called and seemed quite demanding that I respond immediately. I finally snapped and yelled at her - raised voice and the works - that she had to stop browbeating me, had to respect me and not assume that I was totally at her beck and call. This felt quite strange to me - my general approach is very much to be the oil on the troubled water, and this was a quite uncomfortable experience for me, leaving me almost trembling, and very ill at ease with my own behavior. But shortly before that I had rhetorically asked my wife what was the lesson I had to learn from this constant barrage of demands. So - have I learned to establish clearer boundaries?
4. In the evening, attended a social event with people mostly the age of our son, and was happy to find I was more social, and felt freer to enter into the conversation than would be the case typically for me (9).
1. Irritability and anger. Anger was over minor things (5-21).
Dreams:
1. Dream that involved several people and a flexible band in multiple colors that some wore as a bracelet, others seemed to be placing on their heads - this was being casually passed around and different people were trying it on in different ways. (This may relate to a birthday party Thursday evening, where a colored string of beads was used to amuse the 2½ year old daughter of one of the attendees - several adults were putting it on her, or on themselves.) General atmosphere was casual, without tension, social (1).
2. Dream sequence, 4:30 a.m.: Involving taking some guests on a tour of Phoenix, but it was much hillier and had more green vegetation - gorse-like bushes. We had a new diagonal street in addition to Grand Ave - and we were on it - NE King St, explaining how difficult it was to make the traffic flow work with these diagonal streets (3).
3. There was also a connected sequence of having a small (brownish) bear on a leash - except that some of the time it wasn't on the leash. We needed to kill the bear for no apparent reason, and had two small beige, bear-killing dogs. There were also on leashes. The action focused in on one of the dogs. Its owner/trainer was encouraging it to start snapping. Once it did, it was taken off the leash and set on the bear, who was terrified, dodging this way and that on the path and stairs - trying to get protection, but there wasn't any to be had. The dream ended as the dog homed in on the bear, and it looked as though it was about to be killed. Feeling: Very uncomfortable with this process - uneasy, but somehow unable to protest or do anything (3).
4. Small dream sequence about 6:30 a.m.: We were in Prussia (? - that's what the dream indicated), talking to two men wearing black military uniforms and spiked helmets. The upper part of the uniform of one of the men changed as we talked by opening panels, to leave a rib-like structure around his chest, under which was a fuchsia-colored tunic/shirt that looked a bit like a bishop's attire. The uniform and the helmets were black, seeming almost to be made out of cast steel (3).
5. Minor dream sequence involving a somewhat political discussion with some of my former classmates. The conservative ones were saying that what needed to happen was for the host country (S. Korea?) to unilaterally declare that they no longer needed our troop presence in their country, and then we should leave. Color: Green, as of leafy trees - quite a bright green (5).
6. Dream of being in Austrian Alps. There was some military involvement - maybe at a military camp, or a few officers involved, but no action. The main theme was about learning to recognize the quality of the snow by assessing its composition somehow. We were in a group of friends, and the whole atmosphere was pleasant and relaxed. Colors: White (snow); beige uniforms trimmed in black (5).
7. Dreaming of being on vacation in Alaska - but also of working on the AMCH budget spreadsheet. It seemed to need to be projected on a screen, and there were issues of clarity and how much could be projected, requiring me at some stage to approach the screen very closely to examine the numbers and image generally. Colors: Generally beiges. Feeling: Calm, relaxed, not uptight about it (6).
8. Dreaming of being on vacation with a group in London. Went sightseeing, did the usual things. I did something different at the end, separating from the group. I arrived by bicycle at the large, very elegant hotel, left the bike and my bags on the steps, and went in to order a taxi for 10 a.m. (a few minutes away) to take me to the airport. Next time I looked, the group was back, with the bus, and the taxi had arrived. I was going to take the taxi to the airport since I had ordered it, but my wife pointed out that I could travel with the bus. I contemplated just hiding from the taxi driver, but decided that was not right. There was a scene while I was talking to my wife of a taxi driver coming up a ramp to the hotel in a wheel chair, and being unable to get in because the door would not operate when he pushed the button. The doorman came out and told him he needed Andy's glove since he was in Andy's wheelchair. The taxi driver went in, looking for his fare. Meantime, Andy, the original driver seemed to have disappeared - taken another fare to the airport. I met the second taxi driver on the steps and tipped him with two large coins valued at about a pound sterling each - one gold, one silver, telling him to share it with Andy, since I was really standing Andy up. He was interested in the other coins I had in my hand, but it turned out none were collectible. Colors: Beige, brown - the taxi drivers had light brown coats like chauffeurs' coats on. Andy was particularly pink of face, with very white hair. The other driver was more sallow, with salt and pepper hair (7).
9. Dreaming of vacationing in England (?) with a group. We did tourist trips by train. At the end of the sequence, there was an issue about who had paid the fare home. We needed to complete that transaction, and agreed to pay it with two checks to another traveler who had cash to cover it. He was concerned that we send him the checks immediately we got home - so instead I wrote them immediately and assured him they were covered. Colors: Beiges and black - beige buildings, especially round the hotel and station where we were focused. Black trim (8).
10. Attending a social gathering that included eating. The featured dish was a whole chicken for each person, prepared in such a way that the consistency was like extra firm tofu - no bone structure. Everyone was raving about the delicious smoky flavor, tenderness etc. I couldn't participate, since these were genuine chickens and I'm a vegetarian. The chickens had a light brown exterior, and the interior was a medium charcoal gray - but no-one seemed to mind that. The gathering was rather informal, on somebody's patio (apart from the strange chicken dish, it could have been the birthday party that my son and his girlfriend hosted in the evening) (9).
11. "The Easy School of Hard Knocks." This phrase was in my head as I woke (10).

6. Fatigued - crashing in early afternoon, late evening (9).

8. Great energy and attitude, mood first thing in the morning. Felt clear, energized, organized; did a few things that I might have neglected normally. But crashed after breakfast, and that was essentially the end of the energy. Remained a bit more focused, trying to complete just one thing rather than opening up a dozen projects as I tend to (11).

10. Clenching teeth (2-14).

I picked many to make jewelry but I could not hold on to them. As I was going down the stairs I tripped over a bag of turquoise gemstones. I ran to get my sister to come. When I came back there was a black sheet covering the stones. I uncovered them to expose what was beneath. Orange white small statues. I was scared. I did not feel right in my skin. I was looking over my shoulder. The owner of the place had warned me about a woman who may come by, she was very jealous. The old woman walked in wearing old raggedy clothes. Suddenly as I turned the lady changes and looked beautiful in a red flowery dress with a white flower behind her ear. This was the guardian of the stones. I have been warned about her. Our second warning was in the shape of a clock (it first appeared like a big dog, then it changed into a clock). I broke the arm of the clock and it started ticking. The priest started laughing and said it was a bomb. I ran to the back with the clock and threw it and it hit an apartment complex and I heard a big explosion. I felt horrible and thought of all the people who will be out of a home. Torturing myself with my regrets. The voodoo priest went home saying "I have no time to waste, I have clients to see". Feeling: Very uncomfortable with this process - uneasy, but somehow unable to protest or do anything (2).

The chickens had a light brown exterior, and the interior was a medium charcoal gray - but no-one seemed to mind that. Appendix B - Making the Medicine
Symptoms and Themes related to the making of the Medicine

The preparation of Geochelone sulcata was conducted at the Desert Institute of Classical Homeopathy in October, 2005. Six individuals participated in the making of the medicine. The process took about three hours to complete. This process was videotaped and the tape then examined after the proving was completed. Symptoms that participants developed and themes of the discussion that ensued are recorded below.

This concept was adopted from Jonathon Shore, MD who has used this process in some of his provings. The theory is that participants develop proving symptoms during the making of the homeopathic medicine. We consider this idea experimental and have not formally included any of this information in the body of our proving.

Appendix C - African Tortoise Myths
Legends of the Tortoise

From: Harrold, A. 2001. "Geochelone sulcata" (On-line), Animal Diversity Web.

Accessed June 04, 2006 at www.afrikaworld.net/afrel/mlb20.htm.

Next to the hare the tortoise is the most conspicuous figure in Bantu folklore. In some parts, indeed, he is more so: of the sixty-one stories collected by Dr Nassau in the Corisco Bay district twenty have the tortoise as the principal character. There seem to be no hares in this part of the country; the animal who most frequently measures his strength and his wits against the tortoise is the leopard, and he is invariably defeated, though on one occasion his son avenges his death by killing the tortoise.

The African tortoise in the tales is usually of the land variety, though in one of the Benga stories [Nassau, Where Animals Talk, p. 158: "The Deceptions of Tortoise."] he is represented as taking to the water with his family, to escape the vengeance of the leopard. In Angola [Chatelain, "Folk-tales of Angola", p. 153.] they tell of a man who found a turtle (mbashi) and tried to drown him, as Brer Fox did 'ole man Tarrypin,' with the same result. The American terrapin is distinctly a water-tortoise, or turtle: there are various kinds of these in the African rivers and swamps, but, as might be expected from the immense extent of desert and forest country, the land ones are the commoner.
Uncle Remus's 'Brer Tarrypin'

Brer Tarrypin figures in six of the earlier Uncle Remus stories (on the above listed webpage). Of the others, the best are the "Tug of War" and the famous race with Brer Rabbit which he won, not (as in the later, moralized fable) through his own perseverance and the other's careless self-confidence, but by planting out his relatives at intervals all along the track. In the later collection [Nights with Uncle Remus, see ref.] we have him tricking the buzzard into getting burned to death, and then making the quills of his wing-feathers into a musical instrument, which is stolen from him by Brer Fox and recovered with difficulty. This recalls Hlakanyana killing a hare and making a whistle out of one of his bones, which the 'iguana' subsequently steals from him, and the Ronga hare, with his pipes made from the little horns of the gazelle he has treacherously done to death.

Out of seventy stories in this book, eleven introduce Brer Tarrypin; the only one that need be noticed just now is where he rescues Brer Rabbit from the ungrateful wolf. Mr. Wolf was pinned under a falling rock; Brer Rabbit, passing by, raised up the rock enough to release him, whereupon he found himself caught, and was about to be eaten when he suggests that they might "leave the whole case with Brer Tarrypin." His decision is the same as that of the hare against the crocodile in the Yao story, and Brer Rabbit escapes.
Character of the Tortoise

This, like some African examples, shows the tortoise in a kindly light; but in general he appears to be less lovable than, with all his wicked tricks, we cannot help feeling the hare to be. The tortoise is slow, patient, vindictive, and, sometimes, cruel in his revenge; but he never shows the inveterate and occasionally motiveless malignancy of the West African spider, the hero of the Anansi tales.

It is easy to see why the tortoise should get a reputation for uncanny wisdom. There is something mysterious about him. As Major Leonard says ["The Lower Niger and its Tribes", pp. 314 and 315] (here somewhat condensed):
The Race Won by the Tortoise

The 'Race' story is known in Africa to the Kamba, Konde, Lamba, Ila, Duala, Bakwiri, and, I believe, to many others. I have come across only two in which the one challenged is the hare, and one of these (the Ila) is curiously mixed up with the story of the Animals and the Well.

The race is run by all the animals to the river, to get water in time of drought, and the youngest tortoise, who has been buried close to the bank, brings them a supply as they lie exhausted. In most cases it is an antelope who runs and loses - the duiker, the harnessed antelope, or some other kind - but the Kamba make the tortoise and the fish-eagle the competitors, and the Bondei the tortoise and the falcon; this last tortoise, strangely enough, turns into a fine young man.

Here, and in the Kamba story, the two are contending for the hand of the chief's daughter; but in general there is no inducement to the contest beyond the trial of strength, This Kamba story is given in Mr. Hobley's book (The Akamba) - the match is between the tortoise and the elephant. This is as follows:

The tortoise one day met the elephant, and said, "Do you think you are the greatest of all the beasts?" The conversation continued:

"Haven't you seen me, then?"

"Did you ever see your own head?"

"What of that?"

"Why, if I were to jump I could jump over it!"

"What, you?"

"Yes, I!"

"Well, try it, then!"

"Not to-day. I'm tired. I have come a long way."

The elephant thought this was a mere excuse, and told the tortoise he was a liar; but it was agreed that the trial should take place next day. The tortoise hastened away, fetched his wife, and hid her in the bushes close to the spot they had fixed on. With daybreak the elephant arrived, and found the tortoise already there. He got the elephant to stand in the middle of a clear space, and then took up his position on one side of him, opposite to the point where his wife was hidden in the grass. The elephant said, "Jump away, Tortoise!" The tortoise cried, "Hi-i!" took off for the high jump, and crept into the grass, while his wife, on the other side, cried "Ehe!" The elephant looked and found the tortoise (as he thought) on the farther side, though he had not seen the actual leap. "Joko! Try it again, for I couldn't see you doing it!" This time the wife cried, "Hi-i!" and the tortoise "Ehe!" and the elephant suspected nothing, thinking that the leap had been too swift for his eye to catch, and acknowledged himself beaten, but was sure that he would be the better in a foot-race. The tortoise was willing to try, "but not to-day, for my legs are tired with the jumping. But could you come tomorrow?" The elephant agreed, and the same place was fixed for the starting-point of the course - the race to begin at sunrise.

The tortoise went home, called his children together, and spent the night collecting the rest of the clan, stationing them at convenient intervals along the course and instructing them what to do.

The elephant appeared punctually in the morning, and after greetings started off at a trot - ndi! ndi! ndi! When he had been running for some time he called out, "Tortoise!" thinking he must have left him far behind, but, to his consternation, he heard a voice in front of him: "Yuba! Why, I'm here!" This happened again and again, till he reached the goal and found the original tortoise awaiting him there. "And so it befell that the elephant was defeated." (The original expresses this in three words.) The Benga wind up the story by saying, "So the council decided that, of all the tribes of animals tortoise was to be held as greatest; for that it had outrun the elephant. And the animals gave tortoise the power to rule."
The Baboon Invites the Tortoise to Dine

Another favorite story is that of the friendship between the tortoise and the baboon, which ended (as in the case of Æsop's fox and crane) in consequence of their mutual invitations to dinner. The baboon, having brewed his millet-beer (moa, pombe, or utshwala), placed the pots up in a tree, and the tortoise, being, of course, unable to climb up, while his host offered no other accommodation, had to return home hungry and thirsty. The tortoise paid his friend out by inviting him at the end of the dry season (the time of the grass-fires) and preparing his feast on a spot which could be reached only by crossing a patch of burnt ground. When the baboon arrived he was politely requested to wash his hands. As he had to cross the burnt grass again to reach the stream in order to do so he came back with them as black as ever.

This went on so long - for the tortoise would not let him sit down till his hands were clean - that he was tired out, and went home in disgust.
The Tortoise and the Monitor Lizard

Still more spitefully vindictive is the character given to the tortoise in the Nyanja story which associates him with the ng'anzi, a large lizard, probably a species of Varanus (monitor). It opens, like many other tales of this kind, with the statement that these two "made friendship," by which we are to understand that they went through the ceremonies of the blood-covenant, binding themselves to help each other whenever called upon. One day the tortoise was in need of salt - well known to be a very precious commodity in certain parts of Africa - and set out to beg some from his friend. Having reached the ng'anzi's abode and got his salt, he next asked to have it tied up with string in a piece of bark-cloth. (Such bundles, each a man's load, used to be brought in to Blantyre by people who had been making salt on the shores of Lake Chilwa.) He passed the string over his shoulder, so that the parcel hung under his other arm, and started for home, dragging the salt after him - gubudugubudu! The ng'anzi came up behind him and seized the salt; the tortoise, pulled up short, njutu njutu! turned back to see what had caught his load. He found that the ng'anzi had seized the bundle of salt in the middle, and said to him, "Don't seize my salt. I have just brought it from my friend's house." The ng'anzi replied, "I've just picked it up in the path." "But you can see the string passing round my neck as we tied it. I, the tortoise, am the owner." But the ng'anzi insisted that he had found the parcel, and, as the tortoise would not give in, said, "Let us go to the smithy [this being the local gossip-shop or men's club of the village], that the elders may decide our case."

The tortoise agreed, and they went to the smithy, where they found eight old men. The ng'anzi opened the case in proper form: "I have a suit against the tortoise." The elders said: "What is your suit with which you have come hither to us?" He stated his case, and they asked, "How did you pick up the tortoise's salt?" The tortoise replied, "Because I am short as to the legs I tied the salt round my neck, and it went bumping along, and then the ng'anzi took hold of it, and I turned back to see what had caught it, and there was my friend the ng'anzi, and he said, "Let us go to the smithy," and therefore we have come here." The elders suggested that they should compromise the case by cutting the bag of salt in two. The tortoise consented, though unwillingly, seeing that he had no chance, since the judges were all relatives of the ng'anzi, as he perceived too late. "Perhaps I have been wrong in taking to the road alone," was his reflection on finding that he had fallen among thieves. The bag was cut, and, of course, a great deal of salt fell out on the ground. The tortoise gathered up what he could, but it was only a little, "because his fingers were so short," and he failed to tie it up satisfactorily in the piece of bark-cloth left to him. The ng'anzi, on the contrary, had his full half, and the elders scraped up what had been spilt, earth and all. So the tortoise went away, crying, "because my salt is spoilt," and reached his home with one or two tiny screws done up in leaves. His wife asked him what had become of the salt, and he told her the whole story, adding that he would go again to his friend and get a fresh supply. He rested four days, and then started once more.

On reaching the ng'anzi's burrow he found that the owner had entered it and was enjoying a meal of lumwe - the winged males of the termites, which are about an inch long and accounted a great delicacy. The tortoise came walking very softly, nyang'anyang'a, looked carefully about him, spied the ng'anzi, crept up to him without being seen, and seized him by the middle of his body. Thereupon he cried out, "Who has seized me by the waist? As for me, I am just eating white ants." The tortoise replied, "I have picked up. Yes, I have picked up. The other day you picked up my salt, and to-day I have picked you up! Well, let us go to the smithy, as we did the other day." The ng'anzi said, "Do you insist?" The tortoise answered, "Yes." So they came out of the burrow and went to the smithy, where they found nine old men. Having heard the case stated, these elders said, "You should do what you did the other day: you cut the salt in two." The tortoise cried in triumph, "Ha! ha! ha! ha! - it is good so," and rejoiced with his whole heart; but the ng'anzi said, "Are you absolutely resolved on killing me?" "You formerly destroyed my salt, and I, for my part, am going to do the same to you!" "Ha! This is the end of me! To want to cut me in half! . . . Well, do what you want to do. It's all over with me, the ng'anzi!" The tortoise leapt up, tu! and took a knife and cut the ng'anzi through the middle, and he cried, "Mother! Mother! I am dead to-day through picking up!" and died.

The tortoise took the tail and two legs and went on his way, and when he came to his wife's house he said, "We have settled the score: the ng'anzi ate that salt of mine, and to-day I have paid him back in his own coin, and he is dead."

Perhaps he deserved it; but the tortoise reminds one of Shylock in his determination to get his pound of flesh. Or perhaps this is a cautionary tale, not to take advantage of others, as one evil follows upon another (see Hyena story).

This story may seem to have been related at unnecessary length (though in the original the speeches are repeated verbatim, over and over again); but it makes such a quaint picture of African life as it is, or was not so very long ago in Nyasaland, that the temptation to paraphrase it was irresistible: the journey for the salt, the covenant of friendship (in this instance basely betrayed), the old men talking over the case at the village blacksmith's forge.
The Name of the Tree

There is a very curious story, found in places as far apart as Corisco Bay in the north and Transvaal in the south, in which the tortoise, as a rule, plays the principal part, though this is sometimes given to the hare. It may have a mythological background now partly or completely forgotten: this is suggested by the fact that God (Leza, Maweza) is introduced in some versions as the owner of the mysterious tree.

On occasions it opens with the statement that there was a famine in the land. The animals, searching for food (or sometimes accidentally, while hunting), come across a tree previously unknown to them, full of ripe and tempting fruit. They send messenger after messenger to the tree's owner, in order to ask its name, or sometimes, simply, "what sort of a tree it is, that we may know whether the fruit can be eaten or not." But the exact name is so often insisted on that it would seem to have some magical significance. The "owner of the tree" is in two cases (Sublya, Bena Kanioka) said to be 'God'; the Bapedi and Baila speak of 'an old woman'; the Basuto say, "The owner of the tree is called Koko." As this word means 'grandmother,' it would seem as if the old woman were the tribal ancestress. Other versions do not specify the owner more particularly, or call him or her, simply 'the chief.'

The messengers - in some instances a whole series is enumerated. In others, after the first, only 'all the rest of the animals' are mentioned - invariably forget the name on the way back. At last an insignificant and despised member of the community - usually the tortoise, but sometimes the hare, and in one case the gazelle - is successful. Here the story should end, and does so in the best versions, with the triumph of the tortoise. But in some the animals turn on their benefactor and refuse him a share in the fruit. The Bapedi make him revenge himself by a trick which properly belongs to the hare, and several subsequent incidents are identical with those in a Ronga hare story, in which that of the tree follows on one of an entirely different character. This, like the Suto and Pedi versions of our tortoise story, makes it an essential point that the fruit on the topmost branch is not to be touched, but left for the chief. The Ronga hare gets at the fruit and eats it out of mere mischief.

The Lamba Tale

In a time of famine all the animals gathered near a tree full of wonderful fruit, which could not be gathered unless the right name of the tree was mentioned, and built their huts there. When the fruit ripened W'akalulu (Mr. Little Hare) went to the chief of the tree and asked him its name. The chief answered, "When you arrive, just stand still and say Uwungelema." The hare started on his way back, but when he had reached the outskirts of his village he tripped, and the name went out of his head. Trying to recover it, he kept saying to himself, "Uwungelenyense, Uwuntuluntumba, Uwu-what?"

When he arrived the animals asked, "What is the name, Little Hare, of these things?" But he could only stammer the wrong words, and not a fruit fell. Next morning two buffaloes arose and tried their luck - it seems to have been considered safer to send two - but on their return both tripped and forgot the word. In answer to their eager questions, he said, "Uwumbilakanwa, Uwuntuluntumba, or what?" - which of course, could not help matters.

Then two elands were sent, with the same result.

Then the lion went, and, though he took care to repeat the word over and over again on the way home, he too tripped against the obstacle and forgot it. Then all the animals, the roans and the sables, and the mongooses, all came to an end going there. They all just returned in vain.

The tortoise traveled a great distance and then said, "Uwungelema." Again he reached the outskirts of the village, again he said, "Uwungelema." Then he arrived in the village and reached his house and had a smoke. When he had finished smoking, the people arrived and said, "What is it, tortoise?" Mr. Tortoise went out and said, "Uwungelema!" The fruit pelted down. The people just covered the place, all the animals picking up. They sat down again: in the morning they said, "Go to Mr. Tortoise." And Mr. Tortoise came out and said, "Uwungelema!" Again numberless fruits pelted down. Then they began praising Mr. Tortoise, saying, "Mr. Tortoise is chief, because he knows the name of these fruits."

This happened again and again, till the fruit came to an end, and the animals dispersed, to seek subsistence elsewhere.

So in the Benga country the grateful beasts proclaimed Kudu, the tortoise, as their second chief, the python, Mbama, having been their sole ruler hitherto. "We shall have two kings, Kudu and Mbama, each at his end of the country. For the one, with his wisdom, told what was fit to be eaten, and the other, with his skill, brought the news."

The Luba Version

This has an entirely different opening. The animals, discussing who was to be their chief, decided to settle the point by seeing who could throw a lump of earth across the river. One after another tried, but their missiles all fell short, till it came to the turn of kabuluku - the little gazelle, who was thereupon unanimously elected.

Some time after this the animals, wearied out with hunting, came across a tree bearing large fruits, of which they did not know the name. They sent the elephant to Mvidi Mukulu, the High God, who told him it was Mpumpunyamampumpu, but he must never look behind him on the way back or he would be sure to forget it. He did look behind him, and had to confess his failure, at which the animals were greatly annoyed, and told him he was no good. (In the original udi chintuntu, which P. De Clercq translates "Tu es un homme méprisable!")

Then the buffalo was sent, but did no better; then all the other animals, except the gazelle, and they also failed.

The gazelle kept her instructions in mind, never looked back, and returned successfully with the name. The ovation with which they received her is described by saying that "they all stood up, and the gazelle skipped about on their backs" - one supposes that they carried her in triumph.

Some Further Variations

The Bena Kanioka version, while beginning in much the same way, ends very differently. After the various animals have failed in their quest the tortoise comes to Maweza, who tells him the name of the tree and gives him a little bell, saying: "If you forget the name the bell will put you in mind of it." (It is not said why none of the other animals had been thus favored.) The tortoise did, in fact, forget the name on the way, but the bell, ringing in his ear, recalled it to him. He reached the tree in safety, and told the name to the animals, who joyfully climbed the tree and ate the fruit, but refused to give him a share of it. When they had eaten their fill they killed him. But the little ants took his body away, and sang:
It is not explained who this person is or how he appeared, but the ants handed over the dead tortoise to him, and he restored him to life. The animals killed him again, smashing his shell to pieces; the ants put the pieces together, and he again revived. As soon as he had regained his strength he uprooted the tree, with all the animals in its branches, and they perished in its fall.

The Pedi version, which is, I think, mixed with a hare story, contains one or two points not found elsewhere: the old woman, when telling the name (which, by the by, has not been asked for: they only say, "May we eat of this tree?"), adds, "You may eat, but leave the great branch of the chief's kraal alone!" (One gathers that this is the topmost branch of the tree.) The tortoise, deprived of his share in the fruit and shut up in a hut (a variant says buried by order of the chief), gets out during the night and eats all the fruit off the forbidden bough. Before returning to his prison he disposes the kernels about the body of the sleeping elephant.

Another incidental touch is that the tortoise - no doubt as an aid to memory - kept playing on his umqangala while crooning over his message to himself-strangely enough, if he is correctly reported, not the old woman's words, but the following song:
The nature of the obstacle is not specified, but what appears to be the same story (told to Jacottet by a girl at Morija mentions an ant-hill). In this story the lion is said to be the chief of the animals who sends the messengers to Koko, and then goes himself. Angered that so insignificant a creature as the tortoise should have succeeded where he failed, he has a pit dug, and orders the tortoise to be buried in it. The tortoise burrows his way out in the night, eats the fruit on the top branch, and returns to the hole. The animals, of course, when questioned, deny all knowledge of the theft. The tortoise is then dug up, and asks, "How could I have eaten the fruit when you had buried me so well?"

The name of the fruit is in every case different; usually it seems to be a nonsense-word (or perhaps an old forgotten one), of which no one knows the meaning. But in Pedi it is Matlatladiane, which the aged guardian of the tree explains to mean: "He will come presently." It is not stated who will come - perhaps the successful messenger.

In some stories in which children escape from an ogre it is the tortoise who saves them by swallowing and afterwards producing them uninjured. The Ronga version of this tale, however, makes the deliverer a frog.
How the Leopard got his Spots

Another incident showing the tortoise in a kindly aspect comes from the Tumbuka, in Northern Nyasaland, now Malawi.

The hyena, for no apparent reason beyond ingrained ill-nature, put the tortoise up into the fork of a tree, where he could not get down. A leopard passed by and saw him: "Do you also climb trees, tortoise?" "The hyena is the person who put me here, and now I can't get down if I try." The leopard remarked, "Hyena is a bad lot," and took the tortoise out of the tree.

We are not told what the leopard looked like at this time, but he would seem to have been 'self-colored,' for the tortoise, offering out of gratitude for his rescue to "make him beautiful", did so by painting him with spots, saying, as he worked, "Where your neighbor is all right, be you also all right [makora]." The leopard, when he went off, met a zebra, who admired him so much that he wanted to know who had made him beautiful, and himself went to the tortoise. In this way he got his stripes.

This "Just-so" story accounts not only for the markings of the leopard and the zebra, but for their being creatures of the wild, for when the people, hoeing their gardens, saw them they exclaimed, "Oh! the big beauty! Catch it and let us domesticate it!" or words to that effect, so both of them fled into the bush, where they have remained ever since. The hyena too met with his desserts, as follows.

The zebra met a hyena, who asked, "Who beautified you?" He said, "It was the tortoise." So the hyena said, "Let him beautify me too," and went away to the tortoise with the words, "Make me beautiful!" "Come," said the tortoise, and began [the work], saying, "Where your neighbor is a bad lot [uhene], be you too are a bad lot!" and then said, "Go to the place where the people are hoeing." But at the sight 'That's an evil thing!' said they. "Kill! kill! kill!" And the hyena turned tail and fled, dashing into the bushes, kweche! and saying, "I will smash him to-day where I find the little beast. Previously I only stuck him up in a tree-fork." And he burst out upon the spot, but found no sign of the tortoise who had gone down a hole.

The old man who told the story added this moral for the benefit of the young: "So nowadays they laugh at a hyena in the villages. You see that one evil follows upon another."
The Great Tortoise of the Zulus

The Zulus have a rather vague tradition about a Great Tortoise (Ufudu olukulu), who has nothing to do with our friend of the adventures related above, but seems to be a mythical being, possibly akin to the kraken, who may not, after all, be entirely mythical. Perhaps it is not out of place, when mentioning the kraken, to relate, in passing, the experience - whether we take it as fact or as folklore of an East African native who had served as a fireman on British ships in many waters. Somewhere between Australia and New Zealand the steamer's anchor-chain was seized by a giant octopus (pweza: "The pweza is an evil person," say the Swahili). The body of the creature was out of sight, but the tentacle which held the chain was - so Ali declared - the width of the table at which we were seated - say, three to four feet. The ship's company stabbed the tentacle with a boathook till it let go, and the pweza sank and was seen no more. Otherwise, one was given to understand, the vessel would have gone down with all on board.

As to the Great Tortoise, Umpondo Kambule told Bishop Callaway that it had taken his grandmother as she, with her three daughters, was crossing the river Umtshezi. It was "as big as the skin of an ox" - not merely "as an ox," being equal to the diameter of the spread-out skin. At any rate, it was big enough to dam up the current: "the river filled, because it had obstructed the water." The three younger women crossed in safety: the grandmother lost her footing, was seized by the tortoise, and dragged into deep water. Her children - the rest of them hastened, to the spot on the alarm being given - just caught sight of her as she was raised for a moment above the surface; then she sank, and was never seen again.

The monster seemingly came out sometimes to sun itself, and on one occasion was seen by some herd-boys, who took it for a rock and played about on it, not heeding the warning of a little brother, who declared that "this rock has eyes." Nothing happened that time, but on another day the tortoise turned over with the boys who were on it and drowned them.

I just noticed that the e-mail heading said Testudo, but the name of
the tortoise remedy says Geochelone sulcata. Are those the same?

Hi Shannon,

No not the same Rx...the tortoise Rx I was seeking is Testudo-hermanni (a Greek tortoise) which I found mention of at the following site:

>
Hence also the interest in the 'snail' Rx. My Pt. referred to characteristics that may be found in both snail or tortoise, though could also be from the mollusc family. I didn't see what I needed in the African tortoise so if anyone has info on the Greek tortoise that would be wonderful! I believe Helios sell Testudo-hermanni.

TAN.

Hi Tan,

here are the provings and some cases of Cepea hortensis by Stefan
