Interesting questions. This is the way Mangialavori prescribes: you take the remedy daily in water potency until there is an aggravation. Some of the aggravations can be brutal, but he likes to know early whether he's on the right track, and this method is quick at pointing out erroneous prescriptions!
It sounds as if the remedy was correct in Dr. Petry's case. Perhaps it needed a complementary remedy to finish the case, or an intercurrent. Perhaps the Eupatorium she took interfered. There's no way of knowing. We don't know her case, and we don't know the remedy she received.
Peace,
Dale

Thanks for this Dale,
I guess one signal of an erroneous prescription would be dissimilar
symptoms (ones she had never had)--but couldn't that also be caused
just by overdosing/proving? Or is there something else he's looking
for? (How long would he have them take it if it weren't producing
*any* response?) Are you able to explain the method any further?
Thanks,
Shannon

Did you misunderstand me? I was suggesting that the case was
inadequately handled, and the aggravation dealt with by stopping
treatment...I did not suggest homeopathy is invalid? I was wondering
what professional homeopaths on the list thought of the writeup as if
you read btw the lines even though she finds herself converted to
homeopathy, she doesn't address the aggravation, the potencies, or why
she had to have emergency surgery anyway? These are important
questions. Theoretically if her doctor found the right remedy/potency
she would not have suffered the flu from hell and diarrhea so badly.
That kind of aggravation does not seem warranted, so I just wonder
what others on the list think?

Thanks a lot.

Hi Jill,
My biggest reaction was to think, "What a shame the homeopath didn't
make sure she understood *to call the homeopath first* (unless a
medical emergency, of course) if anything untoward should happen!

The aggravation seems unfortunate, but need not have been such a big
deal; too bad the homeopath wasn't given a chance to try to calm it
before other interventions were taken. But sometimes even if the h'th
does everything right, things happen...
Best wishes,
Shannon

For the past 10 years, Dr. M. has prescribed daily drops (using LMs in water potency) until there is a clear aggravation. If the remedy is right, he claims it's impossible not to see a reaction within 30 days; if it's wrong, proving symptoms appear fairly quickly. He also uses plant remedies derived from triturations of the whole plant. Guyjons Pharmacy is now his main source.

Hi, Jill
I simply wish to address the issue you raised about aggravations. Gentle healing by the right remedy/right potency is an ideal to which we all aspire, but it's not always possible. I don't think it's purely a question of potency and remedy match, either. After reading a slew of Bellis perennis cases, I wonder if certain remedies might not elicit strong aggravations -- perhaps even require them as part of the healing process. Perhaps the more closed the remedy (and patient), the greater the likelihood of a spectacular aggravation.
Any others have opinions on this?
Peace,
Dale

But in her case it seemed that proving symptoms developed pretty
quickly even on the *right* remedy... Well, I guess it's back to the
many ways one can, er, "pet a cat"? :-) It's interesting to hear the
very different approaches taken, among experienced and successful
prescribers.

Shannon,
I don't think we can assume that hers were proving symptoms because we don't know the remedy she was given for her fibroids. Flus and dramatic discharges such as she described are generally viewed as healing symptoms -- that is, aggravations, not proving symptoms. According to Cooper, one of the main problems in treating advanced cancer was that the right remedy could set off a discharge so violent that it would drain a debilitated vital force, exhausting and possibly killing the patient before it could heal the cancer.
Peace,
Dale
