Can you make some suggestions?

Post by Barbara »

My neighbor came to me last night. She is in the 36 hour day
situation with a ninety-year old mother who is deteriorating rapidly
with Alzheimers. Celeste is distraught, physically exhausted from
lack of sleep, etc. She is a physically strong, small-boned and
thin woman in her late fifties. Her husband is also in the home and
supportive.

I mixed her a small glass of water with Rescue Remedy in it and sent
the bottle home with her. I suggested she look into homeopathy and
gave her the card of my naturopath who is treating me with homepathic
remedies. The family is not well-to-do (her husband is my barber)
and she said they could not afford it as they have to pay $800 a
month for health coverage as is. I will take her Dooley's book in
the next few days.

I am just a student of homeopathy and would have no idea how to
repertorize for her (exhaustion, despair, emotionally and physically
debilitated). Of course I want to get help for her and have no
pretenses of my own ability to do so. She did not come to me
for "help" and she is a person who will persevere and do what's right
until the very end at the expense of her own well-being.

Maybe if I could suggest something to give her some relief it would
help her to see that working with the homeopathic doctor is the best
way to go for both her and her mother.

Thank you for any recommendations you might make.

Barbara

You say you are a student. Have a look at the magnesiums- as in Mag Carb and
Mag Mur and also Nat Carb. Muriatic acid - in Scholten's Elements describes
this situation - see below!!

Picture of Muriatic acid
Essence:Real care and nurturing.
Real care and nurturing
They like to take care of people. They tend to sacrifice themselves
completely in this task and they are always ready to help others. It is as
if nothing short of total devotion is good enough. They tend to carry the
burden of the whole world on their shoulders. The feeling behind this that
they may be left ontheir own if they don't provide this service. They feel
that only total devotion and nurturing will prevent their relationship
coming to an end.
Exhausted from caring
Because they get so totally absorbed in taking care of things they
eventually get exhausted. There is no limit to the amount of time and
energy they will give to the nurturing of others, so they never have a
moment to themselves. Then they want to do ten things at once and they
become chaotic and hurried. Until they are totally exhausted and then
they'll become very irritable. Anything, any remark or request may be the
last straw and eventually they will just droop in a chair or fall asleep in
the middle of doing something.
An exhausted mother
This is a typical situation of a mother or father who will use all their
energy to be a good parent. They want to be a really perfect parent and
partner. This striving for perfection can make them exhausted. Especially
if there are some added difficulties such as the care of a handicapped
child or a sick relative. They will overtax themselves, but their idealism
won't let them do things by halves.

However do remember that you can't force things on people. If she is not
asking you for help maybe you should not think about offering it!!

All the best

Hi Barbara,

A couple of rubrics from Synthesis:

Anxiety, sleep, loss of: Calc, Carc, Cocc, Nit-ac.
Anxiety, health, of others: Agar, cocc,
health, of relatives: Ars, bar-c, carc, cocc, hep, merc,
moni, phos, plat, tritic-vg.
Ailments from, cares, worries: Ambr, arg-n, ars, calc, carc, caust,
cocc, con, cypra-eg, germ-met, hippic-k, ign, kali-br, kali-p, lyc,
mag-c, nat-m, nit-ac, nux-v, ph-ac, phos, pic-ac, sanic, staph, vanil.

Out of these my favorite would be Cocculus because I have had
experience wtith it - it is well known as a remedy for those who lose
sleep and suffer ailments from looking after sick people. I've found
it to provide a feeling of settling and calming and being restored
when I've had one of those long nights with sick children. And there
are some Bach flowers which may address her issues specifically -
like Olive for exhaustion, Cerato, depending on if she is the sort of
person who is desperate for support but never actually accepts it, or
Centaury or if she is being overwhelmed and unable to stand up for
herself, Honeysuckle or Walnut to help with the process of change. If
she finds the Rescue Remedy helpful she may be open to finding a
flower remedy which is more specific to her situation, and the Bach
remedies can be very cost effective for those on a low income.

You may not be able to help her at the moment with homoeopathy - but
her story provides you with a practical situation to explore, which
is always good for comparing and learning remedies, and laying
groundwork for building confidence and expertise.

And meanwhile, sometimes people value just the shoulder to cry on, a
space to take a breath and sit for a few minutes with someone who
just cares and doesn't become unavailable by trying to fix whatever
is wrong. One way to maintain that sense of availablity is to match
your breathing rate to the other person's breathing rate. This
somehow seems to give the person the space to settle and resource
themselves, and find a way forward.

Thanks for your response Rochelle. The element of perfectionism is
defintely a component of Celeste's personality. I am not thinking of
prescribing anything to her personally. The suggestions will
contribute greatly to my "education" in homeopathy.

I truly hope she can consider consulting with the homeopath. The old
saw about leading the horse..... She definitely needs some help.

Gail, Teresa and Rochelle -

I so appreciate your resonses. It adds so much to my education and
gives me some places to go if Celeste and I talk again soon. I do want
to ask her about the RR and if it helped at all. My experience with
recommending the flower essences is that people just don't use then
intensely enough to get the effect they need. When I use them with my
cats I treat them as many times a day as I can (short of bathing them
in it) or very frequently in short periods if needed. People just seem
somewhat leary of doing that in spite of information that they cannot
harm in any way.

Certainly the Cocculus seems to be a hit in all the problems Celeste is
facing right now and she might accept the short-term dosage protocol to
see if it will help. Also if she feels the RR helped she might be open
to going on to the Olive.

I know as practitioners people seek you out and it is important for any
person to take responsibility for their own treatment. My intention is
not to reach the practitioner level and I feel so strongly in the
modality that I wish the whole world could be more open to it.

Who knows what effect even a small pearl dropped in the right place at
the right time can do? I left my bottle of Rescue Remedy with an ER
vet one time - saying "just play around with it and see what you think"
as of course those vets deal daily with animals in severe shock from
traumas and surgery.

Hi Barbara,

as a student of homeopathy you will have some MM's I suppose.

What you have said strongly suggests that Cocculus may do her good.
You might look it up in a Materia Medica.

Extra expense she cannot afford fo a homeopath may only add to the
overload of pressures she has weighing on her, which seem to be her
basic problem.

Luise
