and there is NO scientific truth about AIDS out there yet.

Concern over HIV homeopathy role
The Society of Homeopaths said it wanted to promote an open debate
Doctors and health charities have expressed concern about a conference
which will examine the role of homeopathy in treating HIV.
The event includes discussion of what have been described as "healing
remedies" for HIV and AIDS.

One of the speakers believes that the treatment, involving flower essences,
can be used to halt the AIDS epidemic.

But the event, which marks World AIDS Day, has been criticised by doctors
who say the treatment is not effective.

About 80 homeopaths and workers from HIV projects are gathering for the
workshop in south London today.

'Ineffective'

It will include discussion about a remedy for HIV and AIDS which is said to
have been used in Africa for five years.

BBC health correspondent, Jane Dreaper explained: "The principle behind
homeopathy is that an ailment can be cured by small quantities of
substances that produce the same symptoms but some doctors say it's
ineffective."

Medical charity, HealthWatch, has criticised the event.

Its chairman said the number of AIDS cases in Africa had been exacerbated
by a refusal to accept scientific knowledge about the condition.

The Terrence Higgins Trust, which campaigns on HIV issues, said homeopathic
remedies alone could not reduce the activity of the virus, nor halt the
onset of AIDS.

The Society of Homeopaths, which is organising the event, said it wanted to
promote a constructive and open debate but it was not offering a cure.

I heard an interview on the radio this morning about this. The discussion moved on to the malaria question. There was an 'anti' and an SOH rep. at the point I came in.
Various thoughts occurred to me:
1. The SOH rep made a big play on the fact that SOH members were not involved in the bbc malaria sting operation earlier this year and that therefore the complaint that none of those offering prophylaxis had been disciplined was not their fault etc. They have a code of ethics that covers this etc. Well, anyone in the UK could name half a dozen SOH members who would provide prophylaxis if asked - and presumably would offer treatment for a patient with HIV or AIDS. Some have written books on the subject of prophylaxis and remain members. And why not? So I wasn't really comfortable about the integrity of this argument.
2. At no point did she actually defend the record of homeopathy in prevention and treatment of malaria. I agree that most UK homeopaths have little knowledge of the condition and may underestimate it and I have felt myself that evidence was all a bit hearsay and anecdotal. So a couple of years ago I interviewed 4 people who work with malaria all the time ( including our own Didi) and asked them for their opinions on prophylaxis and treatment. I came to it with an open mind but they were all were all very positive about the results of what they were doing both in prophylaxis and treatment. The results of this survey are on line now

Subsequently I also had the opportunity to ask Luc de Schepper about this: he had initiated a small experiment in Kenya on prophylaxis and was impressed with the results. (No room for him in the SOH then!)
Perhaps we should be a bit braver and not be cowed by the critics into denying what we believe.
3. The SOH rep (whose name I have forgotten) did a brilliant job in keeping her cool and the way the other chap carried on it made me realise that your average homeopath would go into an interview like this like a lamb to the slaughter. We need more people with these skills.
4. I don't think the details of some of the less homeopathic treatments that (i think) were being discussed at the AIDS seminar came out in the interview - even she would have had a struggle defending it if they had! As it was she put up a good case for us being open minded and investigating and discussing before making up our minds - and in that respect made the 'anti ' chap look like the prat he was! (That was why he shifted the debate to malaria, I think).

I am not sure if there is actually a problem about prescribing prophylaxis for malaria , I do it all the time. However I ALWAYS state that there are no guarantees and that I have to advise you to consider allopathic treatment but it is up to you what you decide!!! In that way I feel I am covering myself. Someone phoned only last week for this but I am pleased to say that after talking to me she has also booked up for a proper consultation as well as to collect her prophylaxis remedies!! We have been warned by the SOH that we may get phone calls to catch us out so I am always very careful what I say.
There is someone who regularly collects her remedies as she does volunteer work for her church with the poor in Calcutta, Bombay, Chennai and in China. So far she has not contracted malaria but says she rarely gets bitten. When I was inn Chennai I got bitten a lot but didn't bother taking allopathic or homeopathic prophylaxis!!!! However I did do my homework and Chickenguna was the problem rather than malaria!!

I prescribe as from the "The World travellers' Manual of Homeopathy" .
From 2 weeks before you go and 2 -4 weeks after you return:

Malaria Nosode 30 1dose morning and 1 dose night on 1 day of the week – say
Sunday!! On the remaining 6 days take 1 dose of China Off. 6 a day.
There are lots of other different ways but this I think is the most straight
forward.

David Colquhoun http://www.ucl.ac.uk/Pharmacology/dc.html is a strong opponent of homoeopathy and calls it sugar pills.
For once our lady Homoeopath did well against him (cp to Prof David Peters The Chair of Health Sciences from Westminster Uni).
David and others like him who regard homeopathy as nothing but a sugar pill should be challenged to a 're-proving' and then they will understand what a 30C of something with powerfully throbbing headaches or gut ache can do!
I would love to see it happen.

In '95 I was in India and contracted malaria. Classic 24 hour
cycle of symptoms. Felt ok in the morning and by late afternoon
felt like I was dying. I went to a local homeopath and he knew the
genus epidemicus. Gave me a remedy (Rhus-t) and in 3 days I was completely
cured with no relapse. I had made it difficult for him by self-treating which
had given him "extra" symptoms that he had to weed out to see the underlying
case.
I found out later in Asian Business Week
that this particular district of this state of India had had 10,000 reported
deaths from malaria. Who knows how many unreported.
Just like all our literature records, homeopathy can certainly cure malaria.
