Diabetes insipidus, or ??
Can anyone offer possible reasons why "failure to concentrate urine
properly" (colorless/watery; profuse; thirst for large quantities
often; frequent urination; frequent urination at night) would be
worsened by "any sort of stress" (she specifically mentions headache,
any sort of illness or upset, and fasting)? She says she's been
repeatedly tested for sugar in the urine, and this is always negative.
Thanks,
Shannon

Maybe the diuretic hormone which causes water from the kidneys to be taken
back into the blood before the urine enters the ureter is affected by
stress?? Just thoughts.

Well, I can offer one possible physiological explanation. The hormone that
concentrates urine (antidiuretic hormone) normally rises during the sleep
process (the body is so intricately designed -- it's amazing!). However,
when people are not sleeping deeply through normal sleep cycles, the lighter
sleep doesn't trigger ADH, and therefore they continue to urinate frequently
during the night. Sometimes people are aware of disturbed sleep, and
sometimes they're not. A good but not infallible clue is if they need 10 or
more hours of sleep a night, their sleep is probably disturbed. Increased
stress often dusturbs the sleep cycles.

Thanks Rochelle and Rosemary!
Disturbed sleep may be part of it, but seems to go beyond that too.
E.g. she said she talked about an episode on a "cleansing diet" where
she became dehydrated despite drinking upwards of a gallon of water
daily, and was becoming "always thirsty". Once she started eating meat
again, she went back to the prior (still not normal, but better) state.
It's not just a nighttime thing. But, that may well be part of it.
Thanks,
Shannon

Ours is not to question why. It just is.
Work with the symptom picture as usual.
You can read up on the why from allopaths if her DX is Diabetes
Insipidus............but it doesn't help us in most cases

Re: Diabetes insipidus, or ??
I was particularly hoping to find some way (rubrics or other) of
factoring in the relationship of "stress" to what appears more usually
to be a rather stable condition--or maybe it's not; maybe on reading it
only appears that way because of lack of better information--anyone
have experience with diabetes insipidus, or anything else that looks
like this?
Thanks,
Shannon

Why test for sugar in the urine?
A test for diabetes needs a test for glucose in the blood.
(Urine shows sugar only after kidney damage and super-high glucose.)
Is her diet too low in protein? That leads to low albumin and clear urine.
If kidneys are damaged they will not concentrate - but you test that
with urine albumin (or microalbumin) not sugar.
Also - Cortisol is a stress hormone and can cause the symptoms you
describe. (There may be other things too - this is just one I know
well). COrtisol elevated, also causes raised insulin and can lead to
insulin resistance and diabetes (and kidney damage and and and...).
The standard test for it is 24-hour urine total cortisol measurement.
Clues pointing to raised cortisol:
Diet too low in protein; central abdominal fat; lack of energy (out of
breath easily); morning nausea/headache/vertigo.
I'd suggest getting a good allopathic diagnosis - then collect
homeopathy rubrics?

Re: Diabetes insipidus, or ??
Hi Irene,
That was done too, and never found to be high. (Tho sometimes low.)
Protein is an issue, and it's worse with low protein, but has no so far
seemed to be a fix.
I don't know if that was done. Would there be other symptoms?
This is one of my "adrenally challenged" family members
so
that's plausible.
Blood sugar is not high
Nope
not strikingly
Headaches in the history, but none of the rest has been mentioned.
I'll suggest it, thanks. (But I won't hold my breath!

Sharon,
They checked for sugar but was the urine checked for blood or protein? Oddly enough sometimes when my daughter's urine had it's highest concentrations of blood and protein, it was completely colorless, abundant, and frequent. She was drinking a lot of both water and gatorade. She was also anemic. Headache, illness, etc. would make the HPS flare but the only indication would be the protein and blood - no other symptoms (except headache or stomach ache). Stress absolutely increased both.
Even at 3+ blood, it could still look normal in color or pale.
FWIW.

Erica
