Just on this subject of older people and joint problems, I have been
wondering for a while about the avalanche of older people dependant
on Glucosamine for their aching joints - The Glucosamine is usually
made from the shells of prawns and shrimps and I puzzle over whether
we'll soon see a lot of people needing prawn or shrimp as a remedy. I
guess there'll be provings of these somewhere already - does anyone
know what they would be called?

Consuming the shells of shrimp may seem kinda weird to folks in the developed world, but it is certainly not unusual in Madagascar. There, in the highlands, women who have given birth are brought bags of little, fingernail-sized dried shrimp (with heads, tails and exoskeleton intact) to make a broth to drink to “make the milk stronger”. The shrimp themselves are consumed with the broth. And everyone on the coast where our daughter is presently serving in the Peace Corps has similar tiny shrimp almost daily.
Other sources of protein are hard to come by—especially this year where last year’s cyclone destroyed the vanilla and clove harvest for this year. When there is meat to be had, the most cherished parts are the fat (for example in a zebu’s hump) and the eyes (of a fish), and after that, the cartilage surrounding the joints. The bones are cracked with the teeth to extract the marrow, and the bone heads are consumed on the spot. Of course all the innards are used in some way. There is little left for the dogs and chickens to eat, but what there is goes quickly.
So it seems to me that glucosamine is not far off just being the food that other folks eat—like an American steak. Not sure why that should make us need potentized shrimp. Teresa (Northern VA)

Our wonderful homeopath really hooked my husband on being treated
constitutionally with the idea that it just might be possible to get my
husband (58) back to running again through miasmatic treatment. At least
that is our doctor's goal for my husband, in the long run. The thought had
never occurred to me, much as I trust homeopathy to be able to work
miracles!

Husband has not run for about 9 years because of knee pain. Even had
microsurgery to no avail. When he finally began taking
glucosamine/chondroitin in supplements about 7 years ago, the daily knee
pain eased off. He has little pain now, but when he has tried to run again,
it has come back. He is able to use an elliptical trainer and/or a
stair-stepper and does so daily, but he would really like to run outside
again. Maybe with competent miasmatic treatment it is possible... I'll be
back in touch in a couple of years on that. Teresa (Northern VA)

aside from normal wear and tear on the joints, diet is
a major aspect of knees breaking down. while totally
agreeing that homeopathic rx help but require a proper
case being taken, i can say that omega-3 oil has been one
the best remedies on my knees. not only omega-3 from
fish oil (much better than vegetable omega-3's), krill
oil has made a dramatic difference for me. and krill are
the very small crustaceans (tiny shrimp) that dwell very
deep in the ocean. they form the major part of a whales
diet, so that tells us something!
i have also used low level laser to rebuild the soft tissue
in my knee joints-quite a dramatic event since all medical
people want you to have surgery.
so those 3 approaches are quite powerful healers.

I take Glucosamine ( at least 1500mg daily) but also rely on a cranial osteopath I see on a swapsy monthly. I am my own worst enemy as I will do high impact aerobic classes I like the loud banging music (and nom Tarantula has never done anything for me :-) ) , run on the treadmill and last night I was foolish enough to do a step class with a support bandage on!! I also have custom made orthotics in my trainers which I think are vital to prevent even more injury!!!

Hi Teresa,

Thanks for sharing all that, I love hearing about your experiences. I
guess I take the point that maybe our diets have become too refined,
and a lot of basic nutritional sources have been lost. So these sorts
of supplements (fish oils, glucosamine, chondroitin) become important
simply because they supply the basic nutritional needs.

It's really interesting that they work so well only as long as people
keep taking them, they don't cure (even though they help rebuild the
joints) they support and palliate, and watching that is helping me to
understand chronic disease.

And I would be still be very interested in reading about remedies
made from shrimps and prawns. I think where I am coming from with
this is because of reading about remedies which come from food
sources, like Lathyrus - we know about it's usefulness in paralysis
because it was used as a flour substitute and caused paralysis. And
foods like chocolate, sugar and wheat have also become valuable
homoeopathic remedies.

the unit i have is a Q1000. you can go to this site:
http://www.solitonlasers.com/
there are some articles there on the laser. my unit is a bit
pricey but it is a professional model with a wide range of
capability.
it works very simply. high frequency laser is used for cutting
as in industry or with eye surgery. however, low frequencies
stimulate the body cells to produce ATP, a cellular element that
is needed for healing. so, in essence, LLL is stimulating the
bodies own healing responses. i consider it a grosser form of
homeopathy in this sense. different frequencies are used for
different levels or qualities of dis-ease. for example, my unit
has 5 different sets of frequencies, or programs. they are structural,
head/heart, organs, chakras, & lymph system. so with these 5
sets of frequencies i can work on every level of the body. there are
other frequency programs that can be purchased, some of them very
specific such as particular cancers, add, autism, etc.
i know the soft tissue in my knee was a disgusting state of mush and
i was not able to walk for over a year. my dentist introduced me
to this unit which at first i refused, but i was so desperate at the
time i agreed at last. it was terrific. i used it for about half-
dozen different structural conditions with great success so i invested
in a unit. i began to see improvement in my knee withing a couple of weeks.
i have treated several other people with it (let it pay
for itself) with a wide range of conditions. one of the most dramatic
were brain seizures in a 13 yr old dog and my cat when she was about
16-17 yrs old. vets usually put them down at that stage, but my cat
rallied round in 24 hrs and began such a rapid healing: it was
astounding. i took 3 days before starting her on a homeopathic rx so
it was very clear that the laser was doing its trick. the dog responded
very quickly, too. within the hour that i was there he began to exhibit
changes in behavior and energy.
so read up on it and you can post me if you have any more questions.
if you should decide to purchase one, let me get it for you.
i know this is off topic, so you may want to post me privately.
