homeopathy and root canal treatment

Hi,
Lately a lot of people have been asking me about homeopathy and dentistry, especially root canals. Although Arnica seems to be magically helpful after most dental procedures, with root canal treatment my dentist explained to me that usually the cause of the pain is infection in the root with no place to go, as the tooth is a "closed box". He explained that the pain subsides as the body absorbs the infection back into itself, as it cannot be expelled through the tooth. A patient who I'd given Arnica to for use after dental treatment reported that in root canal pain it was useless.
Last Thursday I experienced the joys of root canal treatment for myself.... I used Arnica 200, and by Friday morning felt almost completely recovered. However, Friday afternoon the pain started building up, and I could feel it was a congestive throbbing pain. Location - lower right molars, extending to the ear and right temple. I also felt a lot of dryness. I tried two doses of Bell 200, which has helped me in the past for tooth pain, but it didn't help here. Increased dryness (mouth and eyes), and a fluttering sensation in the right temple. Back to the books, led me to Bryonia. The pain and "fluttering" in the temples went down, the pain became much more bearable. Woke up Saturday morning still feeling slightly achy but much better. Saturday afternoon the pain started building up again. Bryonia didn't help. The tooth itself became more sensitive to touch. Tried Staph, which gave an interesting sensation: localization of the pain in the tooth itself, which started throbbing, then back into the jaw. Finally only relief came when someone gave me energy treatment using an amethyst crystal.
So here I am, Sunday morning, still wondering what remedies are good for this kind of congestive pain, nerve connected but not the shooting pain I would associate with Hypericum (which I haven't tried yet). Feeling slightly achy but generally better - only I don't know if it will build up for the afternoon again.
In my situation, there seems to be a clear afternoon agg modality. Also there's external pressure and lying on the painful part amel.
Any ideas appreciated! There is also the question whether by my self-dosing I made the situation worse.
I'm also interested in the whole connection between homeopathy and dentistry - does anyone have any comments or recommended reading? I've found the few pages in Dana Ulman's Discovering Homeopathy helpful, but am looking for more info.

As a slight segue, dentists often do root canals as they claim that antibiotics cannot penetrate into, as you put it, a "closed box" in order to fight the infection deep within the tooth however, I once found an old reference for using the homeopathic cell salt SILICEA and have found it to be successful several times in clearing up the infection and thus eliminating the need for the root canal.

note the presence of Sil, Hecla lava, Pyrog and Merc on the list. i have used merc with abscesses with some success in controlling the pain.

you might have a look at these remedies. there was a dentist that used to tune into minutus who spoke of using hecla lava a lot.

I think my case was probably pretty typical of what goes on. I had some pain a few months ago, which I treated successfully with Belladonna. The dentist took an x-ray, saw there was decay very close to the root, and said a root canal was needed. There was no pain at that point ( a lot more after the treatment though!) and no abscess.
Thanks for all input! I know there are homeopathic books on dentistry but is there anything recent that relates to modern procedures?

i think abscess means any inflammation at the root with a build up
toxic crap; ie, pus which the body has no ordinary means of discharging.
obviously once the root canal has been done, inflammation can remain if
the dentist is not successful in removing the toxic material.
what is interesting is that the inflammation can affect the rest of the
body, but the body cannot heal the inflammation because is is encased.
now since there have been cases where abscesses are treated with homeopathy
successfully, but slowly, it seems that the body may be able to handle
the problem if people can stand the pain while they work on the problem.
most of us cannot.

There were a couple of wonderful (long) articles in a past Homeopathy Today (NCH publication) on this subject and related tooth issues. I can look it up and say which issue if anyone is interested in that detail. One was by a dentist, a Dr. Fischer, I think it is, right here in my “hometown” of Annandale, VA. The article(s) would probably be interesting to practitioners and certainly to lay people. You have to be a member of NCH to look at them online, but I remember when I got that issue I thought that the articles were worth a year’s membership in and of themselves. Teresa (Northern VA, USA)

With the help of the just mentioned HT article even a lay person could understand what’s going on and put up with temporary discomfort for the great outcome, IMO. I think the remedies suggested dealt with the pain very quickly and often resolved the problem without root canal, but there was also stuff on root canals. Teresa (Northern VA, USA)
