Hi All
Soroush wrote me back to suggest that people who were new to the site would not be able to follow the discussion if the old message wasn't included. Do other people feel this way? How do other people feel about eliminating the old message when replying to someone's e mail. If I'm in the minority then I withdraw my request.

I have to agree with Jill. All messages are rec'd in the first place. Save what you want and discard the rest.

The simplest way to resolve both points is to hit the reply button but then to delete all but the part specifically to which your reply pertains.

It has been accepted standard operating procedure since the beginning of
time (well, internet time for a person replying to an email (Especially
on an email list such as this) to include some pertinent portion of the
email that is being replied to.
In consideration for people with slow internet connections, or those few who
pay "per bit" for downloading email, it is also considered good form to ONLY
include pertinent portions- deleting, for instance the Footer (yahoo.com
info, unsub info, the Minutus disclaimer) and anything which might appear
below that (from the previous email message in the thread.)

people.
There are many reasons why the standard of including pertinent portions of
the immediately preceding email in a thread when replying/commenting should
be adhered to.

Well, I just deleted all previous posts in my last post. Personally I like to keep the tail of posts to help me when i try to compose a response: it's all there. But it can get pretty long--I guess it depends, for me, on the nature of the discussion or points being made.

I get about 400 e-mail a day. If there is not a snippet of the old message
left I have no way to tie in the present conversatin with the rpevious
thread. So if the essence of the question/discussion being addressed is in
the message that would be great
