Because she has a brain. We have evolved from being driven only by
instinct (hopefully).

PS. As far as the ethics of abortion (I fear we've entered a slippery
slope here) in the USA the same people who are against a woman's right to
choose (control over her own body) are usually the same ones that are in
favor of the death penalty. A prime example of male sensibilities
shaping society's values/morals/penalties/laws.
In so many countries around the world decimated by war and disease, there
are children alone, dying literally for lack of food and care everyday by
the thousands. As I write this they are dying. When anti abortionists
speak to me on this issue I love to ask them how many children they have
adopted and how many children they are supporting in countries where the
mother is alone and cannot earn a living or find food. Where are these
humanitarian anti abortionists when you need them?

Re: Subject: Abortion
Is there a distinction between forces imposed upon a woman which may lead to
her child dying than her denying the unborn any chance of life at all and
arranging for that life to be extinguished herself?
What I am saying is that usually a mother (human or animal) will fight tooth
& nail to defend her offspring. In fact in the animal kingdom we regularly
witness an attack by the female if she perceives that the life of her
offspring is in danger. [Hippo killed a woman in Africa last week when she
was taking a photo of the baby hippo and had just got too close for the
mother's comfort]. So what greater force possesses her to destroy the
unborn.
[I think it is a bit wrong to site "control over one's body" after that
'body' has become pregnant. Perhaps if we are discussing control, that
control should have been exercised prior to conception taking place. (I am
not discussing rape - that is a separate issue).]
It is also not right to compare the situation of women in western affluent
countries to those of the improvised nations. Certainly in UK there are
queues of people waiting to adopt!
