I always enjoy reading the posting in the Minutus, I have learnt a lot from all of you.
I have a question, have any of the ferns have been proven?
I mean:
Braken fern - Pteridium aquillinum
Deer fern - Blechnum spicant
Sword fern - Polystichum munitum
Lady fern - Athyrium filix-femina
Spiny wood fern - Dryopteris expansa
Oak fern - Gymnocarpium dryopteris
Narrow beach fern - Thelypteris phegopteris
Goldenback fern - Pityrogramma tringularis
Liquirice fern - Polypodium glycyrrhiza
Green spleenwort - Aplenium viride
Maindenhair fern - Adiantum pedatum
Fragile fern - Cystopteris fragilis

Dear Lucy,
I do know that Frans Vermeulen's next book to be published is on plants and has a chapter on the ferns, naturally. He includes everything he can find on those that have been made into remedies (and more!), but that doesn't necessarily mean that they have been proven. Sometimes people just feel instinctively, or follow local lore in knowing that certain things should make an interesting remedy and make them up, or have them made up, so they are listed in a pharmacy's catalogue, but have only been used clinically.
The themes seem to be a major affinity with the eyes and vision; many ferns contain thiaminase which is said to promote a feeling of optimism, helps to overcome stress, depression, anxiety and poor memory, stabilises appetite and maintains normal heart function. Severe deficiency results in beriberi. Also ferns contain anthelmintic properties which paralyse both the voluntary muscles of the intestine and intestinal worms; fern-induced toxicity closely resembles the side-effects of intensive chemotherapy or radiation; some are edible and some are highly toxic and carcinogenic; some are used for topical applications for wounds, sores, boils, burns, chafing, abscesses, acne, eczema, psoriasis etc.
Most of the ferns that have any homeopathic data have less than 5 symptoms except for Fil - Dryopteris filix-mas which has 40-ish.
There is a fair bit of use for treating for worms amongst the little remedies.
We obviously need some fern provings, they have great potential.

Hi all,

Felix mas (Male Fern)
has a great reputation as a vermifuge and other sx.
A quick look at RefWorks shows it in a number of books including Boenninghausen & Allen's Encyclopedea & Hering's Guiding sx.

But no indication of actual "proving"

The pharmacopoea indicates a History and authority:
Introduced by Berridge; Allen: Encyclop. Mat. Med., Vol. IV, 332; X, 528. Hering; Guiding Symptoms, Vol. V, 326.

It is in Provings And Clinical Observations With High Potencies. MALCOLM MACFARLAN, M.D
But again was that a proving or simply going by historical information.

Hi Shannon,

Well, it was first mentioned to me in a discussion on the treatment of Molluscum by someone who said she had used it a lot successfully. I am not a great ‘specifics’ person but this person asked if I hadn’t noticed how often children with molluscum seemed to suffer from poor concentration at school, dreaminess and getting into trouble for it. Sweatiness, exhaustion, jumpiness, irritability also ………... When I reviewed some of my more stubborn cases I could see a picture there and I used it on two ongoing cases with spectacular success and since then most children with molluscum symptoms will end up with Ladyfern now at some stage. I have not often been disappointed. Having said that, my most recent case, which was by far the worst I have ever seen and which had been going on for 2-3 years responded dramatically to Phosphorus after Ladyfern did nothing. Mulluscum does not come up clearly in the proving of either although there is something in the ladyfern one that could be a burst red molluscum and some itchy lumps.

I feel I should be using it more widely and this has reminded me to.
