Spider bite = Ruta!

Post by Irene de Villiers »

Thought someone might be interested:

I had a rather nasty (presumed spider) bite a day or so ago, which today
got a lot worse, very swollen around it, burning hot (gee I could sell
it back to the utility company for winter heating!), red for 6 inches
dia, increasingly blistery in the center, itching like mad, rubbing
(brushing against clothes) agg, scratching temporarily relieves, it is
developing ulceration in the middle. Also severe headache and nausea.
I thought Tarent-c or Lach might help and LAch looked a better match
- Lach 200C helped very little and very slowly and not for long. After
dandelions and ginger for supper I felt a little better, thought "herbs"
and looked up "herbs spider" and found Rue - which is Ruta. Looking in
the repertory Ruta is nowhere to be found for spider bites or even
"wounds-bites", but I see it has some relevant rubrics:

HEAD - COMPLAINTS of head - accompanied by - nausea
HEAD - PAIN
SKIN - BURNING
SKIN - DISCOLORATION - red
SKIN - DISCOLORATION - red - scratching; after
SKIN - ERUPTIONS - discharging - scratching; after
SKIN - ERUPTIONS - inflamed
SKIN - ITCHING - burning
SKIN - ITCHING - corrosive
SKIN - ITCHING - scratching - amel. - transient
SKIN - ULCERS - hot
SKIN - ULCERS - undermined
GENERALS - RUBBING - agg.
GENERALS - WOUNDS
GENERALS - WOUNDS - heal; tendency to - slowly
GENERALS - WOUNDS - swelling of
Anyway one dose of Ruta 30C and 30 minutes later and the arm is warm
not burning hot, headache and nausea gone, no itching, not ulcerating,
swelling almost all gone.

Ruta is not listed (in Radar 9 repertory) under the rubric for spider
bites, or bites in general or bites of poisonous animals.

Irene

Ever though of Ledum, it is a brilliant remedy for venom and other types of
bites and stings.... and punctured wounds.

Thanks Sandra - I have used it yes. My cat had a black widow bite almost
ten years ago in Florida and I used Led 30C, Lach 200C and Hyper 200C in
rotation with success.
Scary time - she was crying with the painful bite and holding her leg
up.. But it did not help this one today.

I do not know what kind of spider it was - and I only assume it was
spider as I don't know what else it could be. There are lots of spiders
in the house at this time as the weather cools. Unlike the black widow
bite it was not painful. I also tried Apis due to the heat, itching,
redness and swelling - to no effect.

But this time Ruta has been the (surprising) winner:-))
The herb site I found says that Rue is used to detoxify spider bites -
it's why I even looked at Ruta. I've never considered it for this before.

I confess I'm a bit afraid of spider bites as I once nearly lost my leg
to a Brown Recluse bite (also called Violin Spider, which is the body
shape of it) - though I have that particular Violin spider to thank for
my into to homeopathy .. in 1984 :-)))

Dear Irene,
Please tell us more. What was used in that case?

Hi Rochelle,
Happy to tell the story, but it had to do with consequences of the bite
rather than immediate treatment, so is more story than spider-bite
treatment. Here's a bit of background to put it in context:

I was well prejudiced against homeopathy - snake oil my dad called
it - and so homeopathy was the last thing I'd have used when I got the
spider bite then. I only found out later that dad's dad was a homeopath
(from a long line of them) who had died of appendicitis when dad was 14
- a horrible age for a young lad to lose a father. But of course he
blamed it on homeopathy, as the guy did not cure himself.
So I was unaware that my dad's older brother age 21 at the time,
carried on the homeopathic tradition and passed it to his daughter, my
cousin Gwen. I never knew why we never visited that ("snake-oil") side
of the family, we just didn't.
However after a year of allopathic bungling from the spider bite
effects, I got worse and worse and had gangrene in my left thigh, the
bite being back of the thigh. My cousin lived near the hospital where I
was scheduled for amputation in Jo-burg (a long way from Cape Town where
I lived), and offered to put me up for the week before the surgery. I
was really sick from the bad leg.

Gwen soon persuaded me when I arrived, that I had nothing to lose by
letting her put "snake oil" remedies into my leg, as it would be gone
soon enough anyway if the remedy failed to help. She crushed Calendula
200c tablets, and sprinkled the powder into the open flesh back of the
leg twice a day where the leg was damaged with deep ulcerations almost
the entire area between knee and hip. She had me take the same remedy
aqueous by mouth as well.
By the time surgery day arrived I felt worlds better, no longer felt
ill, and the leg was responding in what seemed a miraculous way. The
edges of the ulcerated part had already healed at least an inch all
round. It was a truly stunning change after every allopathic
conventional (antibiotics) and unconventional (application of some sort
of tar type stuff) approach all did nothing for the leg for the prior
year ....(though the tar did a significant number on all my fancy
business clothing).

Anyway the leg healed spectacularly and there is almost no scar today.
The circulation is not the very best, but plenty good enough. I of
course suddenly became a snake-oil convert:-)) I was quite stunned to
see the accumulation of a library of books Gwen has inherited, handed
down through many generations of homeopaths - and was totally jealous of
her family's casual ability tio "speak homeopathy" the way I speak plain
English.
So Gwen gave me a crash course in homeopathy, drilled me in the
importance of repertorizing and how to use Rep and MM etc - I got myself
a pocket Boericke MM and Rep on which to cut my teeth (much dogeared at
this point as I still take it when I travel anywhere) - plus she typed a
wonderful little book just for me! and gave me a kit of 30 remedies.

By the way, typing the little book was very special as Gwen had never
typed. She hunted and pecked the entire thing out of love, gaining the
nickname "Quit" from the many times she tried to save the file and it
kept asking her "save or quit?" and as she did not understand saving
needed a file name and what that was - it never worked, so she felt like
quitting.
But eventually it was done, a lovely little gem of a book. I also got a
photocopy of an ancient cat homeopathy book - sadly no author or date -
just a price of 2s6d (a quarter) on the cover, from her extensive
library of homeopathy books. She helped me with many cases initially as
well - and later wrote a homeopathy column in the cat magazine I
published (PawPrint).

So that's how I got my start in homeopathy - in South Africa - before I
came back to USA and trained formally with BIH - on two legs but with
some ambivalence about spiders!

wonderful story irene. thanks.
fyi, i was watching an old 1950's movie with
loretta young early this a.m. the husband was
very sick (and crazed) and there was the dependency
on allopathic drugs/doctors. and here was this older
woman chatterbox going on and on winding up talking
about all these drugs, etc. and then she says something
to the effect, "when i was younger we just used these
little homeopathic remedies. i wonder what happened
to those homeopaths?"
i dont think i ever heard a reference to homeopathy
in a mainstream hollywood movie before.

Fascinating story, and great insight into Ruta, which I had never thought of
or used for this purpose. Thanks very much for sharing, Irene and Sandra.

Wonderful story Irene. I am just curious. Exactly how long did it take for the leg to heal completely?
