precautions and advice for prescribing remedies during Pregnancy?
Dear Members,
A 35 year old woman in her 2nd month of pregnancy.
Very brief sx picture: She has constant nausea, no vomiting,
tiredness, intermittent severe migraines, mid-thoracic back pain,
thirsty for sips of icy cold water, and aversion to sweet foods and
red meat. Light craving for salty foods and salmon and cream cheese,
and whole milk. Eats little at a time, nausea worse from eating.
Also, has that sick feeling felt in epigastrium. Intermittent
constipation. Occipital and nape of neck pain/stiffness. Must have
head propped up. Light rubbing on epigastrium helps, as does light
rubbing on mid-back. Firm pressure on neck is desired. Aversion to
first son. Desires to lie next to husband. Mood and affect appear
to be normal (no weeping, sadness, fears)-- except moaning from the
nausea. Ability to work full-time is in jeopardy and employer is not
empathetic to working mothers. I guess this would be a fear that she
has, of losing or at very least strife with employer.
Pulsatilla 30C water dose did nothing. Puls 200c gets rid of migraine
within 1-2 hours - no headache for almost 2 weeks. Migraine appeared
again, repeated Puls 200C -- and remedied the migraine. Puls. helps
slightly with nausea but short relief.
Sepia, Bryonia and Nat. Mur are considerations.
Her greatest complaint is the severe nausea. Any suggestions?
What precautions or other considerations should one be aware of when
prescribing remedies during pregnancy? Any remedies too avoid?
Potency? Repetition? Other?
Any suggestions would be appreciated very much.
Kindly,
Preston Foell

Hi Preston, IMO it would be useful to find out which of her symptoms
came on with pregnancy.

"Aversion to her first son"??
How old is this son, and does she give any reason for the aversion?
That certainly brings sepia roaring to mind!

Re: precautions and advice for prescribing remedies during Pregnancy?
Hi Luise, thank you for your help.
Symptoms begun about a month following conception include:
nausea (she doesn't recall having that other than bad stomach bug
few years ago)
Very cold drinks (prior to she always asked for drinks w/NO ice
and even warmed up her ice cream! Now she has to have ice cold
drinks-sipped
Migraines - about every other month for few days w/menstrual
No back or neck pain prior to pregnancy.
She had slept with one or no pillows prior to (now 2-3)
Bowels - very regular, normal 1-2/day, now alternates between
loose and constipation
Son - 5 years old. Very close, absolutely loved being with him,
close to him, hugs, kisses, playing, cuddling, and even spent much of
night, still, sleeping with him. NOW, she talks about how annoying
and nauseated she gets when he's around, more so when he touches her.
Husband - Seems normal and relatively healthy, except signs of
conflict and arguments over how to raise son/kids. Prior to, in last
5 years, she had not felt like showing much physical affection, hugs,
kisses, etc. and not much desire to sleep next to him. NOW, she loves
being around him and loves lying next to him!
Food - Prior to salmon and most fish she did not eat due to
smelling too fishy, and she ate red meat, chicken, and spicy foods
most days, and very little dairy. NOW, she can't eat red meat,
chicken or spicy but craves/eats turkey, salmon, cream cheese,
crackers, and whole milk. She used to eat mainly 3 meals, and now can
only nibble.
Mood - prior to seems to have been relatively happy, except
for 'crazy' boss. She denies and I can't find signs of being weepy,
sad, depressed or related. NOW, she doesn't exhibit these moods but
yet the moaning and seeking closeness to husband and aversion to son.
Fatigue - prior to she managed fairly well to bike few miles
to/from work each way, work exhausting job, and immediately return
home to cook, play with son. She seemed to have good energy, slept
very well at night---NOW, she must lie down immediately after work and
wakes up several times in night.
Oh, she has 'pressure' pushing on her bladder, so goes to
restroom every 1/2-1 hour and yet little urine comes out. This is new
, too.
I'm wondering if Puls 200C (4 oz water, 1 tsp.) should be administered
more often than the 2 times in approx. 2 weeks, or look into changing
to Sepia or other.
A little too much info, huh?!
Thanks a lot for the help,
Preston

Re: precautions and advice for prescribing remedies during Pregnancy?
Hi Shannon and thank you for your help!,
Her son is 5 years old and spent most of her free time with him --
definitely a mother who did not want to be away from son, and wanted
to be a stay at home mother. She and son were very affectionate,
loving, and you can tell a very special, happy bond.
She had little desire for affection with husband. That dies 5 years
ago, she laughs! But still good relationship. Very few instances in
last 5 years of affection or desire to be close to him. NOW, she says
she feels much better when not only near him but lying next to him.
Quite a change!
Puls and Sepia seem to fit best, any ideas??
Thanks again for your help Shannon!

dear Prestofoell,
i deeply studied the case and uncommon symptoms indicates to SEPIA. ITS Potency to be used starting 30 , 3doses at an interval of 20 mintues .if improve within 3 days go to 200, 1000 ,10 m accordingly. try it .ihope results would be amazing.

Re: precautions and advice for prescribing remedies during Pregnancy?
Hi Preston,
I would definitely not call this "too much"--possibly some good clues!
Here's my thinking: Her aversion to her son I would call *very* SRP,
and gotta-rep. (Possibly it would be useful to ask her more about that
and her changed feelings about being close to her husband, but possibly
unnecessary.) Sepia of course leapt to (at least my) mind, but I also
looked at the rubrics "aversion to family members" and "aversion to
certain persons". I decided to combine these since they are similar
yet contain different remedies.
- "Touch" seems to be an issue for her, since prior she was very
cuddly with son, yet not with husband, whereas now she is irritated by
son, *esp. when he touches her* (and the noise), but wants to lie next
to (not cuddle with!) her husband. So I added "Mind, touched, aversion
to being"
Using the rubrics:
Aversion family members + aversion certain persons
Desires cold water, icy
Aversion to being touched
Bladder, urination, frequent, small quantities (two rx only, so likely
incomplete)
One remedy runs thru all of these, and that's Phosphorus.
Nat-m runs thru all except the (possibly too-small and possibly
irrelevant) urination rubric. So those would be my two top contenders;
possibly leaning more toward phos, but would try to confirm that by
looking more at the rest of her case.
I also looked to see which remedies have both aversion to fish
(previously) and desire (her present desire for salmon), and those are
phos, nat-m, and kali-i.
Her change in attitude toward her son and husband *could* be from
Phosphorus' pattern of being over-involved (very busy, and also very close with her son, *but* somewhat
distant from husband; not uncommon with mamas of small children!),
leading to burn-out (can't accommodate her son now) and withdrawal
(perhaps lying next to her husband gives the affection that phos
craves, plus the quiet haven that a collapsed/withdrawn phos needs).
Seeing phos as only one of two in the "urination frequent, small
quantities" rubric seems an encouraging "confirmatory", tho I am always
reluctant to put too much weight on such a small rubric, particularly
when it is somewhat normal to pregnancy, I think.
So--that would be my starting point, unless other things in the case
were to lead elsewhere. Nat-m definitely also worth a look, tho since
her issue seems more around touch/withdrawal rather than emotional
isolation or sadness, I'm not so taken with that idea.
Do remember that a "collapsed" phos does not "look like phos"...
My two cents for the moment!

Hi Shannon, Preston,
I would gibe high priority to the fact that it all started with the
pregnancy.
Kent is not very helpful in that - are there rubrics for that in the
softwares?
I do guess, however, that this would not take you away from the
remedies you listed beow.

Re: precautions and advice for prescribing remedies during Pregnancy?
Yes... But pregnancy in itself is neither acute nor trauma; what it
does do, is stress and/or accentuate the chronic state.
Sometimes the stressing might cause a shift into a different remedy
picture, but not necessarily... There's this:
FEMALE; PREGNANCY; complaints during (150) : acon., aesc., aeth.,
agar., Alet., alum., am-c., am-m., ambr., aml-n., ang., ant-c., Ant-t.,
apis, arg., arg-n., arist-cl., arn., ars., art-v., asaf., asar.,
bar-c., bell., bell-p., benz-ac., berb., bism., bor., bry., buni-o.,
calc., calc-p., Camph., canth., caps., Carb-ac., carb-v., cast., caul.,
caust., cedr., cham., chel., chin., chlol., cic., Cimic., cina, cinnb.,
cocc., coff., Coll., coloc., con., croc., cupr., cupr-ar., cycl., dig.,
dros., dulc., equis., ferr., ferr-p., gels., glon., goss., graph.,
ham., hell., helon., hep., hydr., hydr-ac., hyos., ign., iod., ip.,
jab., kali-bi., kali-br., kali-c., kali-chl., kali-fcy., kali-i.,
kalm., kreos., lac-ac., lach., lam., laur., lyc., lyss., mag-c.,
mag-m., mang., merc., merc-c., merc-d., mill., mosch., mur-ac., murx.,
nat-c., nat-m., nit-ac., nux-m., Nux-v., oena., op., petr., ph-ac.,
phos., piloc., pitu-p., plat., plb., podo., pop., psor., Puls., pyrog.,
rat., rhus-t., sabad., sabin., sec., sel., Sep., sil., sol-n., spig.,
spirae., stann., staph., stram., stry., sul-ac., sulph., tab., tarax.,
tarent., thyr., valer., Verat., verat-v., vib., viol-o., zinc.
And then there's Tub, which (I was taught) may tend to be *better*
during pregnancy--but I don't offhand see a rubric for that.
So--I agree that needs to be taken into account. Also we need to not
put much emphasis on those symptoms that are rather normal to (the
stage of) pregnancy.
