fear of poverty

Lets not forget that it might be entirely appropriate to have fear of
poverty...people losing their homes right and left. people losing their jobs
to the global economy. weaklings and cads, avaricious people and dopes running
the government, the medical industry, the insurance industry, schools,
churches, so on and so forth. What remedy do I need?

You've got a valid point, Carol. If s.o. was allowing themselves to go
deeper and deeper into debt w.out a realistic prospect of change in the
future, and endangering their own and their family's home and security -
without showing the slightest sign of anxiety around this - then that
would constitute a symptom in it's own right. When the economy gets
tough, people get psoric. When s.one fails to fall in with such trends,
I'd call that pathology (in this case most likely sycotic - spend when
you should save). As with all symptoms (someone who's dangling off a
cliff isn't suffering from a delusion they will die...) pathology
depends on the context.

Fear of poverty in a rich person becomes a symptom- then it is
irrational. Most of the time rational fears are not symptoms ( fear of
insects in a child as was posted in this group sometime back is an
acceptable reaction in a child but is a symptom in an adult).
Irrational reaction to a normal occurrence is a symptom - washing
hands a 100 times because of a speck in hand-

That's one of the challenges of analysis--working out which apparent
symptoms are really part of the "case"!
