Re: remedy before mammogram?

Post by Vera Resnick »

Hi,
One of my patients is planning to do a mammogram (I'm sure there will be comments on the pros and cons of the procedure itself!). Her breasts are very fibrotic, so the procedure is very painful, and it's painful for a while afterwards. She has asked me if there is a remedy she could take before the procedure which would lessen the pain during and after.
Any ideas?
Vera

Dear UK Homeopath !

As you know one of Minutus's primary roles is teaching and exchanging of
view on aspects of Homoeopathy.

If in a case exam you had just written the name of the remedy you thought
was indicated, you would get very few marks even if deemed correct.

Please therefore explain why Bellis is indicated in such cases so that we
all learn.

(Reason is an extremely good learning aid)

dear Soroush!

having given the same answer as UKHom, i found your remark schoolmasterly.

I thought this is is mainly a forum where professionals meet and not a teacher and pupil relationship. I hope nobody is getting marks here!

this is not a case exam, but a fellow homoeopath asking for suggestions. Vera did not present a case but just a clinical condition , bruising of breast, for which bellis is famous.
Would you also have asked why giving Canth for bullous burn?

Schoolmasterly? :-) Well good, we *are* here to learn from each
other!
It would be perhaps enough answer to just as--as you did--that the rx
is "famous" for bruising of the breast--but more interesting, IMO, if
one says more!

It seems to be a remedy worth knowing. Very similar to arnica, yet
with its own areas of specialty; one being affinity for "deeper
tissues" (e.g. abdominal, and also breast), but additionally--I recall
hearing--for situations such as bruising and sprain/strain where most
people will respond best to arnica, some apparently respond better to
bellis-p.

MORRISON's "Desktop Prescriber"-
Bellis is indicated in trauma, less often than Arnica but similar
in many respects. Sprains, bruises and lacerations or incisions may
require Bellis. In addition, this remedy has been used for abscess,
dysmenorrhea, rheumatism. Even cases of malignancy have been reported
benefitted in our literature.

General.
Sore bruised sensations. Extravasation.
TRAUMA, surgery and contusion of the trunk of the body.
TRAUMA FOLLOWED BY PROXIMAL LYMPH GLAND SWELLING AND COLDNESS OF
THE LIMB.
General aggravation after getting wet or taking cold drinks when
over-heated and perspiring.
Surgery - both for the pains and to speed recovery.
Abscess.
[...]

***Chest.
Breast cancer after injury to the breast [so before mammogram use
as preventative?].

Extremities.
Bruises, contusion and hematoma.
Sprains with ecchymosis, stiffness and coldness.
Rheumatism in "old laborers".
Abscess.

Relationship.
Comparisons.
Arn - Contusions and ecchymosis, aggravation from getting wet,
soreness.
Led. Sul-Ac. Ruta.

Cheers,
Shannon

Dear Peter
One of the beauties of CLASSICAL HOMOEOPATHY is that one works out the remedy and can justify it.
And this site is CLASSICAL Hahnemannian.
Therefore, it is essential in my view that we do not come up which prompted my remarks. (I had not read the previous exchanges about the breast symptoms etc, but in any case it was the way the remedy was suggested that pulled my strings. I always try to look for justification of the choice of the remedy.)
When Homoeopaths discuss cases and matters with each other, the educational aspects of Minutus is enforced.
Forget about 'schoolmasterly', I was making my point as a humble student! However, I think Shannon's reply is perfect.

Thanks very much for all responses. However - at the risk of sounding schoolmistressy/masterly/whatever - no-one seems to relate to the first part of the question! (or maybe I missed it in which case mea culpa) She wants something to take BEFORE the procedure - and this is something I know many listees are split on. I don't give anything before procedures as a rule, I prefer to prescribe on the symptoms AFTER rather than what has to be a "specific" before as it's not against symptom similarity, unless I just prescribe for the fear and not the bruising.
She's about to get Pulsatilla as a constitutional, hasn't booked the mammogram yet as she's so fearful of it. Bellis and Arnica both sound like strong suggestions for after the procedure, and I'll probably send her home with both (not together.. one or the other.. easy now..)
