Generalities:

Feeling of total exhaustion.
Feeling like being knocked out after waking up.
Physically like being knocked out in the morning but mentally fit.
Strong chilly feeling in the evening.
Feeling chilly, attack of goose-pimples all over the body (right after taking the remedy).
More thirst than usually.
Constantly longing for clear water.

This is of course only a small section of the symptoms of the proving. The complete remedy proving with repertorisation is available in print, as well as a little brochure called 'Larus argentatus, a homeopathic way of loosing weight' in German.

Many patients have already taken advantage of the most significant symptom of the proving (the constant longing for food); I gave them the remedy in Q-potencies to help them to lose weight, with excellent results!

Of course it is never a remedy alone which changes our eating habits, so I wrote a little brochure to show some ways of changing one's attitude concerning eating in the long run (How do I use eating to avoid feelings? What are my alternatives to feel better?)

Cases: (from the author)

I had some good experiences in small cases of back and throat pain but the most beautiful case so far is of a female priest who got stuck in the frustrations of daily life concerning her vision about her profession.

Extreme exhaustion, difficulties in planning her family situation and pain between the shoulder-blades were the guiding symptoms to try Larus argentatus C30.

Shortly after taking the remedy she had a beautiful picture in a dream of how the spirit of God floated over the water like a bird and she got her energy back and her backache disappeared.

At the next celebration of the day of repentance and prayer she organised a real feast with gospel music in the church!

I just received a letter from her (she moved to an island in the North

Sea!) that she is fine, even nine months after taking the remedy, and she asked me to send her another dose of Larus argentatus because her energy is going down slightly and she is still in the process of working out her family situation. (Most of the time her husband, who is unemployed, takes care for their three year old boy.) I just sent her a dose of C200.

I am curious which of the symptoms will get verified in your clinical experiences.

To conclude this article I would like to share a picture of one of my own dreams at the time of the remedy proving:

Birds are the mediators between heaven and earth. Sometimes they are very close to the sun but they always have to return to earth. As far as 'child' care is concerned, they are a good example to us on how to share the duties equally between male and female. And there are a lot more things we can learn from the birds. Taking a look at life from a different perspective is useful for every one of us.

I was inspired to write a book that will have the title 'The joy of

Homeopathy' in which I will write down my full experiences with this remedy and with homeopathy (4) in general. It will also serve to give lay people an insight into how knowledge is gained in homeopathy.

My strongest intention is to motivate you, dear colleagues, to carry out provings of remedies of which you have the feeling that they may serve in some degree to solve some of the problems of our times and to document these provings.

1996 is the 200th anniversary celebration of Hahnemann's discovery of the Law of Similars.

For a long time I have felt that our range of homeopathic medicines is sadly lacking in remedies from the realm of birds. After some short dream provings of the remedies Eagle and Hawk during a homeopathic seminar I decided that it was the right moment to set up a systematic proving with the students of the advanced homeopathic seminar of the university of Kiel . I chose a remedy of a bird that I see every day, circling around my office in Eckernf×rde which lies directly at the Baltic sea : the sea-gull.

The most obvious characteristics of the sea-gulls are their constant hunger, their hoarse voice and their equal sharing of the child care between female and male birds. The fact that sea-gulls also have other abilities apart from 'eating, surviving and picking at one another' is very well documented in the visionary book and film of Richard Bach 'Jonathan Livingston Sea-gull'. So I was very curious which of these themes would show up in a homeopathic proving.

I scratched off a little bit of the wing-root of a feather of a sea-gull and potentised it myself up to C5. The C18, C30 and C200 potencies were made by a pharmacist in Hamburg , Mr. Wolfgang Courth. A group of 43 provers took 3 globuli of a C18 potency, up to three times, most of them without knowing what kind of remedy they were proving and they wrote down all the changes they were experiencing in a diary. A 'must' for all homeopaths who think about conducting a proving is Jeremy Sherr's book The Dynamics and Methodology of Homeopathic Provings (1).

I had my most exciting experiences right after potentising the C5. I was seeing a huge feather-like cloud in a blue sky and I had series of five lucid dreams while writing down the symptoms of the provers. (In a lucid dream (2) the dreamer is aware of his dreaming). During that time I took Larus argentatus Q9 1x3 globuli each day for one week.

Mind:

I am joyous and hum all the time which I usually do not.
A lot joy of life.
More lightness and happiness.
More energy and motivation.
More contentment and calmness.
Clarity of thoughts.
Feeling of overview.
I can see clearly now, I'm realising the meaning. The universe helps me to go my way.
New ideas that I want to put into action immediately.
Big changes of my mood.
Feeling like an eagle who fell down and broke his wings.

Vertigo:

Slight vertigo two minutes after taking the remedy.
Slight vertigo like being empty in the head (immediately after taking the remedy).
Vertigo with heavy sweat at night.
Vertigo when moving the head.

Eyes:

Oedema of the lower eyelids after waking up (remedy the evening before).
Eyes as if glued together after waking up.
Dryness of eyes, a little as if glued, amelioration outside.

Ears:

Fine perception, especially hearing. Good discrimination of various sounds.
Great acuteness of hearing; for a short moment I had the feeling of hearing, smelling and sensing everything in the room at the same time.

Throat:

Feeling of soreness in the throat.
Sore and dry feeling, like having a hoarse voice.
Sore throat like having screamed too much.

Stomach:

A lot of hunger.
Hunger, hunger, 'attacks of eating'.
Very hungry, especially in the evening. I could eat constantly.
Ravenous hunger, especially for sweets.
For some time I have no brakes concerning eating, I could eat constantly, regardless what kind of food.
Pain of the stomach, moving up into the oesophagus and taking my breath away.

Rectum:

Smeary stool.
Stool softer than before.

Urine:

Permanent urge to pass water, getting worse during the day.
Frequently going to the toilet just to pass a few drops of urine.

Male:

More sexual energy.
Better sexuality. More lust and activity from my part.
Lust to be sexually together with my husband. I enjoy the longing.
My body is full of sexual emotions.

Cough:

Dry cough with stitching in the lungs.

Chest:

Irregular palpitations of the heart, shortly after taking the remedy. Some seconds of congestion (organically healthy female prover).
Heart beating, I strongly feel my own heart beat.

Back:

Strong tensions between the shoulder-blades with twinging pain.
Pain between the shoulder-blades in the upper part of the back.
Strong pain in the lumbar region.

Extremities:

Stitching pain and pinching feeling in the left big toe shortly after taking the remedy.
Isolated feeling of shooting coldness between the 3rd and 4th toe right.
Ganglion at the right foot diminished by two thirds.
Extremely cold feet for some days.

Skin:

Dry skin.
Dry facial skin, especially forehead and cheeks.

Sleep :

Being awake late in the evening.
I can stay awake easily for a long time.
Before sleeping I lay awake in bed for one hour.
I don't know whether I sleep or dream or think I am dreaming.
I awake consciously from a dream-space. I feel a connection to the universe and to eternity by living in this space. I feel that I want to care and look for this space again.
