Glaucoma

Post by Ananda Ruchira »

Hi All,

This is a challenging case (umm, "person with a case") for me. Some insights and pointers to the right rubics would be helpful.

==============
Female 72 years. Intelligent, well spoken.

Glaucoma since about 4 years, now taking allopathic eyedrops. But since there's no allopathic cure, the patient knows this is only palliative. Eyesight is deteriorating. Dim sight & pain on and off as per disease sx. Not many individualizing sx. Slight cataract in R eye. Possible high blood pressure (forgot to take it, actually) involvement. Otherwise in fairly good health, overweight constitution.

Now when I asked her to "tell me something about yourself". She said that she first trained to be a librarian. After settling with her husband in Kenya she held a variety of jobs ie beautician, etc. Presently she owns a "health farm" and is interested in natural and nutritional healing.

Choosing to be a librarian for some reasons struck me as unusual so I asked. She said
"I was born to read. I couldn't imagine why anyone would pay someone to be a librarian" (meaning it is such a joy to her) I loved the job"

She told me she used to wear glasses, but prayed to be healed. She was. After that she didn't wear glasses for 20 years.

Later in the consultation she said that, in fact, she had an "allergy" (sic) for 5 years, occuring just before the glaucoma started. The "allergy" was a sharp pain in the eyes which felt "as if broken glass was in the eye" making her fearful to open her eyes. The pain was such that it would force her to go to bed. Burning pains. No nasal or other sx. She said that there was a great deal of fear of going blind. On more questioning, the real fear was that she might not be able to ever read again. She said, "Not reading is like the end of life"

She went to various doctors with no help, eventually a pharmacist declared it as an "allergy" (sic, again) and gave her some pill (unknown). It cleared the pains and over the next few years the fear was controlled/overcome and the allergy went away. During this period she felt a lot of insecurity about the fate of her unhappy marriage and possible insecure future. Eventually that passed too. Soon after the "allergy" cleared the glaucoma appeared.

Things that have helped her before seeing me: Prayer; grapeseed extract.

I've given Sulph 200 as the first prescription. I'll see her again in about 10 days.

==============

While I can draw a line thru the whole karmic string re: love of reading, fear of losing eyesight, possible suppression (first thru the earlier prayer to improve eyesight, then thru the "allergy" drugs) etc. I dont know exactly what to do with this homeopathically.

question 1 Any rubics to suggest? Remedies? Other directions I can explore

question 2 Does anyone have experience with treating glaucoma? Clarke claimed to cure glaucoma, modern science says its impossible.

Glaucoma
is the result of optic fluids not draining/flowing thru the normal ducts. Something blocks it. Pressure builds in the eye causing pain and distorted vision. The optic nerve eventually dies or is permanently damaged leading to blindness. No known cause that leads to the blockage. Bilberry and various herbs are known to palliate, nothing is known to actually cure.

Hi Didi,
This is the sort of disease where I would feel very unsure about
treating the eyes versus treating the whole--but since you haven't
found anything characterizing about the way she "does glaucoma",
perhaps your only choice is to do it in context of the "whole person".
With that in mind, a very off-the-cuff offering:

EYES; GLAUCOMA; general (62) : abel., acon., adren., aegle., allox.,
arec., arg-n., asar., atra-r., atro., aur., bell., berb., bry., camph.,
caust., cedr., cob-n., cocain., cocc., colch., coloc., com., cortico.,
croc., crot-h., dttab., esin., euphr., eys., gels., grin., hed., jab.,
kali-i., lac-c., lach., lyc., mag-c., mag-p., mez., nit-ac., nux-v.,
op., osm., Phos., phys., pipe., plb., pot-a., prun., puls., rhus-t.,
sapo., saroth., seneg., sil., spig., sulo-ac., sulph., supren., wies.

MIND; READING; desire for (16) : adam., agki-p., agn., alum., anth.,
calc., carc., chin., clem., cocc., kola., nux-v., oena., puls., staph.,
sulph.

Appearing in both, the only three remedies I show are Nux-v, Puls and
Sulph. Nothing in your summary suggests either nux or puls, but is
sulph a possibility? (Sigh, when is sulph *not* a possibility...! :-)
)

Best luck with this!!
Shannon

Glaucoma - like so many other "incurables" responds to homeopathy
sometimes at least arresting further deterioration etc. I have
treated a case of glaucoma where the vision improved after Calc.
carb based on non-eye symptoms and mental symptoms ...

Mental symptoms were the current mental symptoms ( anger with
ophthalmologist for something that happened 2 years back )etc. and
vertigo caused by anger- this had calc. and within 1 week his vision
improved to the extent that the person was able to pick flowers etc.

So just work on it as it is any other case. A homeopath should start
any case with the idea that it is curable - because we have not yet
fathomed the full power of this system and repertories do not have
all the cures achieved. Keep your faith....

In this case- I think Sulph is a good prescription. I would probably
wait for its action to start and continue..even if it is not the
correct prescription for the glaucoma it will bring out more
symptoms that might lead you to the remedy.

I would also offer the following. Since there was this "glass"
sensation in eye to start with - ( some of these sensations because
of their peculiar nature become equal to generalities- also eye is a
very important organ and so complaints of eye, severe enough, become
equal to general symptoms even though they are local complaints)

Glass, were in eye, piece of - Rhus.t
breaking on opening lids - Meph
eyeball rubbed against spiculae of - Sulph

Eyes burning in glaucoma - Phos
in glaucoma (iritis) - extending to head and around eye, firm pressure, in warm room - Colocy
Eyes, cutting - in glaucoma - Coloc

Mephitis has lots of eye symptoms -one symptom is Pain from
overexertion; given this patients job of librarian, overexertion is
a definite possibility. In the same vein, Rhus tox could also be
indicated. And in fact it is also there in Glaucoma.

For now I think Sulph looks fine. I would also suggest to have Phos,
Rhus.t and Mephitis in consideration.

In some works on therapeutics - Physostigma and Osmium are
considered specifics. Esp,Physostigma.

( Occupation, book worms - Coccul, Nux.vom)

I would try to get more information on eye deterioration- what does
that mean? how is it dim, letters not clear? Hazy? Get the exact
words..., how does it react to lighted surroundings, dim
surroundings, sunlight etc; any time variations, modalities of the
pain ( ?light wrote:

Dear Ananda,
The key to your case might lie in making an educated guess as to what that pharmacist gave her.

If I guess, I would place my bets on steroids group of drugs.

If this hypothesis were true you will get nowhere in this case unless you first clear the side effects of steroids(such as destruction of thymus, loss / distortion of immune function) which last more than 20 to 25 years.

Since I take only difficult cases given up by others, I get almost 70 percent of cases with steroid use history.

Initially there was great difficulty. Now I give ACTH 6C (or 6X for weak / old) water potency once daily for 7 to 10 days which brings out new symptoms (not always); thereafter the cases begin to respond quite well, at times clearing up in a matter of days, but mostly in a few weeks, one case took 2 years; no cases that did not respond and that is what sustains my belief in homeopathy.
Regards.

And diet can - should - play a major role in reversing it - and I'm sure
homeopathy as well - but in my view, homeopathy should never be expected
to correct dietary errors - it's a matter of removing a maintaining
cause to correct the diet.

I know this because my own eyes had pressure measurements of 28 and 30
and last week were down to pressures of 13 and 14.
I used mostly diet.

In my view, yes - but then I include diet in ALL cases:-)

Hi Didi

I had a recent very successful case - There was a lot going on the lady’s life of a staphysagric nature but the glaucoma manifested towards the end of all that and the main remedies were natrum mur and medorrhinum. I did start off with gelsemium which had helped with a milder case in someone else previously and with phos lm but the main improvement was when I gave the med and nat mur on the broader indications. In between she had silica and calc fluor as tissue salts so that might also be implicated in the success. Throughout she had a supplement with bilberry and antioxidants. It is marketed more for macular degeneration but the two can go hand in hand anyway. Readings went from 25 to 17 I think. (haven’t got the case to hand).

Hi All

I chose Sulph initally because it came up in Glaucoma (44) and also in

Mind; FEAR, general, phobias; blind, of becoming (3) : agre., nux-v., sulph.

and from the simple H formula to give sulph as an initial dose and when in doubts (the homeopath, not the patient).

======
yeah, true, nux-v is strong there in repertorization, but the lady didn't strike me as a "nux kinda guy".

======

I think Sarvadaman's suggestion that the "allergy" drug was probably a steroid and perhaps the direct suppressive cause to the glaucoma. This sounds very to the point. I will look into it when she returns.

I initially looked at osmium. There are strong peculiars with it re: coloured auras around objects, especially candles appear green. I even did a quicky "test" by lighting a candle for her to look at. No go. So I think i'd go for it only as a "last resort"

as a therapeutic, looks promising.

Hmmm. snakes sound interesting, esp since I've got this idea (from where?) that snakes can clear up blocked fallopian tubes - this may be parallel (ie blocked optic drainage). Lach & Crot h come up under Glaucoma.

She says she loves reading because of the knowledge it brings. When she used to work in the library she had only to think of something and there would be a book about it.

I'm grateful & taking in all comments & advice so far and waiting to hear from more contributors....

Hi Irene,

What diet do you use and how do you work out what the dietary errors
are?

Thanks, Gail.
