Not 100% sure but I think symphytum might be unavailable because it
has been mistaken for foxglove which resulted in a poisoning and also
it has been implicated in, I think it was liver toxicity when used as
an edible herb - that might have been the same case, not two separate
ones. Again, not 100% sure of the details but it was something like
that that I read a few years ago when I was growing it in my own
garden in Australia.

The other thing that happens is that some species introduced to
Australia become feral and are classified as noxious weeds because of
the damage that they do to the native habitats. Horticulturalists
here seem to be approaching a sort of purist ideal with plants which
have been grown for many years as standby favorites now being
declared noxious weeds not to be sold in nurseries.

It is a bit odd about Symphytum because Hypericum - St John's Wort is
also a noxious weed in Western Australia - you can't buy it dried
herb form, but it is freely available as a liquid or tablets.
