darkness below eyes/dis-ease labels

Post by Leilanae »

I've always wondered about this "I have/you have" label which is
reinforced each time it is spoken. I seem to remember reading
something about people succumbing to the diagnosis/label.

Not arguing, just wondering why people have to "have something".

I agree Leilanae - but when one discusses a syndrome between client and
medical practitioner and the illness name is needed for clarity - it is
better to say "I *have* diabetes" than to say "I *am* diabetic".
Something one "has" can be discarded or cured or removed - but something
one "is" implies it is part of one or worse that one IS the disease.
Only used when it is necessary to discuss a diagnosis .... for example
towards understanding symptoms and repertorizing - not as a general label.

The short answer to why people have to "have something" is that a label gives an illusion of control. I've seen this so often in the kidney patients I've counseled over the years: the more precise the diagnosis, they feel, the more likely they'll get the "correct" treatment. This is the result of the mechanistic view of disease taken by modern medicine -- and patients buying into it.
It's a shock when they realize that the label matters little, because conventional medicine has so few tools to treat immunologically-mediated disorders. And they're almost all suppressive.
Peace,
Cinnabar
