I have 2 patients with pernicious anaemia both of which are having Vit B12 injections. Both also are complaining of itching skin (no eruption) mainly in hands and feet. One at least have had blood tests recently which included liver function all of which were fine. Has anyone else come across the itching with pernicious anaemia and Vit 12 injections?

I had a client who presented with MS and she opted for these injections - they nearly killed her, her skin went a strange colour, I wouldn't say jaundiced but it was getting that way and itching (along with a lot of other nasty sx)

Personally I think her sx pointed to PA, even the tingling and numbness she experienced and the wobbly gait but the allopaths insisted it was MS and treated accordingly

Liver damage can be involved with PA and as I suggested before the itching could be due to bile secreting through the skin (dolichos)

As with any packaged product, these injections are not pure. They have preservatives, fillers, and a host of handling problems. You might suggest they try to obtain a product from a different supplier.
Some Dr.s are quick to give B12 when in fact other Bs are more necessary. As with everything else - it's a balancing act. Just because the liver function tests are OK does not mean they are not in need of appropriate supplementation - particularly if the anemia is persisting.

Dear Joy,

Yes that is why I asked about her blood tests and she said she has had a liver function test.
I have gone back to dry dose with her as one or 2 things have come up with the Ars 30 5th edition prescribing and she didn't phone to tell me despite what I said and didn't stop dosing!! She came today with an empty bottle telling me about the fact that she feels full up all the time (but common with many obese people, she is still eating because she doesn't think it is good for her not to eat!!). First it was full after eating but now it is all the time. The itching is now just hands and feet so there has been an improvement with this although she didn't think the Rx had done anything!! I have given her a dry dose of Phos 30 as it is complementary to Ars and is black type for the fullness appetite wanting!! It also covers other Sx of hers like incontinence at night (but she is a lively woman in her 80's)

Pernicious anaemia

I'm afraid that here in UK once they start with the injections they appear to be for life. I don't see much regular testing going on to see if they actually need the injections anymore!!

In neither cases has this been mentioned.

Any chance of allergic reaction to the preservative in the B12 injections?

Check the ingredients. The manufacturer has to list them all in the
package insert if not on the bottle.
If it's an allergic reaction I suggest it can be handled with high dose
pantothenic acid (like 1500 mg at a time), plus lots of ascorbic acid
(teaspoon of crystals) and Vit B6 (like 100mg).

When I was on insulin I used that trio to ward off reactions as ALL
brands of insulin use the same preservative (how bright is that!) to
which of course you-know-who had to have an allergy. I also reduced my
dose per shot to 4 units at a time - and that seemed to allow me to use
the stuff without too much hassle till I could get off it altogether.
I do something similar if I need dental anaesthetic as I have allergy
there too.

But if you do feel there is allergy here - I'd find another route
for healing. Most people with allergic reactions have other allergies
too - usually there is something more to suggest an atopic situation
exists - like past history of allergic reactions for example.

2) What can be done about it?

I see many cases in cats, of nonregenerative red cell anemia. I find
they respond well to simillimum (about 50% seem to need Plb, others
varied depending on cause of the pernicious anemia, incl Ars) plus a
specific good iron tonic such as Lixotinic or Pet-tinic. (Same product,
different volume, Lixotinic comes in gallon size).

Lixotinic does not help by itself in pernicious anemia - it needs
the simillimum to trigger the bone marrow's RBC factory back to life.
The Lixotinic was developed for horses, and if you want some high
powered work, look at horses as horse racing is for big bucks and
research is with the big bucks.
Lixotinic (which I have used myself for anaemia - people are not so
different from horses and cats though of course that was "off label"
use) is an iron tonic with copper for absorption plus other relevant
nutrients - the ratios in Lixotinic seem to work especially well.
I also am a great believer in an anti-inflammtory diet for ANY unwell
(or well) individual. (...meaning anti-inflamamtory at cell wall level.)

Again in cats (sorry but that's where I do most of my work) there is
an ill-cat food which they like and which is based on liver - nice and
high in B vits that absorb well. In people I'd use liver pate, liver and
onions, Liver added to lasagne, liver included in bobotie, liver added
in skillet mixes, liver mixed into taco beef, etc etc.
:-))

Does that help at all?
