low blood pressure questions

Post by lynnpax »

Dear list members,
For many years I cooked in iron pots but stopped after reading about the hazards of too much iron, particularly for non-menstruating women, on Dr. Mercola’s newsletter:

http://v.mercola.com/blogs/public_blog/ ... -9609.aspx

I have also read that one can lower their iron level by donating blood.
My first question is how safe is it to donate blood if you have low BP?
My second question is what causes LBP?
Quite the opposite from HBP, I have found frustratingly little info on LBP.

Best regards,

City shelters put to death 23,684 dogs and cats in 2004.
An estimated 4 to 6 million dogs and cats are euthanized in America's
animal shelters each year because they are not wanted. We used 5 million to be safe. (Reference: HSUS Pet Overpopulation)

Re: low blood pressure questions

Hi Lynn,
There is a limit where, if your blood pressure is "too low" they will
not take your blood--simply because "you can't afford it"! I *think*
that threshold might be 90/50 (90/60?), but I'm not certain. It's
around there, tho.

Many years ago, on my first blood donation, the nurse who was taking my
bp remarked, "Wow, I'm not sure I can take your blood--hang on a
minute" and ran off to check. Apparently I was just barely above the
threshold, so she went ahead. I had no problem or discomfort, tho I
suppose there's a greater risk of fainting?
Adrenal exhaustion is the cause that I'm familiar with; possibly there
are others, but I *think* this would be by far the main one.
Yep. And ditto on the subject of adrenal exhaustion, tho this has
*finally* begun to change (just barely begun). In general, the "hypo"
states are harder to treat than the "hyper" states, which is probably
the reason why there is less information available. Let me know if you
want me to send the info I have re nutritional adrenal support. But
some really easy helps are simply: eat more protein and good diet in
general; eat more salt (preferably *good* quality unrefined salt, *not*
the regular commercial variety); regular schedule with plenty of sleep,
exercise, etc.

Dear list members,
My second question is what causes LBP?
Quite the opposite from HBP, I have found frustratingly little info on LBP.

Tetany (anxiety neurosis)

Anxiety Neurosis is a frequent disorder that has physical manifestations characterized by a localized spasm surrounded by a general constricting sensation with feeling of death.

Oppression, suffocation, palpitations, hypotension, fainting attacks, cramps, numbness, pins and needles are the symptoms.

The patient has the anxious feeling that they cannot control their enormous energy unless they faint or they die.

The symptoms are recurrent, like seasons, menses, lunar cycles, and are always related to a manic-depressive anxiety.

The reactive mode is tuberculino-luetic, with a tendency to sycosis when the attacks are chronic.

It is a perfect field of action for homeopathic remedies.

Blood pressure low. (l.b. p- hypotension)

Low blood pressure, is also named as hypotension- means pressure of blood below its normal measure. The blood pressure is said to be low when systolic pressure is below 110 m.m. volume of mercury.

CAUSES

1. Shocks, grief, anxiety, frustration, worry, sudden fear or fright.

2. Gastric derangements- nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea -acute or chronic gastro- enteritis, poor digestion, poor assimilation of digested foodcausing excessive flatulence.

3. Diminution on of blood volume in the body with marked anaemia, muscular weakness, atrophy of muscles, progressive emaciation.

4. Low vitality, slow weak action of the heart.

5. Excessive vital discharges from the body i.e. , loss of blood as menstrual haemorrhago, lcucorrhoea, loss of watery contents, or salts from the body through diarrhoea and vomiting.

7. Frequent fasting, or frequent suffering from acute diseases, fevers, typhoid fevers, jaundice, and after surgical operations.

8. Weak heart, organic defect in heart, hypertrophy of heart or functional disorders in the heart action. Neurasthenia- nerves weakness, mental depression, sinking and fainting of heart.

SYMPTOMS

Great weakness, debility and prostration- i.e. , patient wants to lie down on bed or ground- due to extremely low B.P. Great pressure, heaviness and pain at the vertex (top of the head), pain in eye-balls pressing inside of the sockets, numbness and crawling, sensation head, limbs and extremities, sluggish circulation, slow, weak, feeble imperceptible pulse. Numbness and coldness of limbs, hands and feet. Great vertigo, when moving, dryness of the mouth, great exhaustion of the body after little exertion, feels chilliness and wanted to sleep every time. Sometimes, there is fainting, collaps of heart and fall while walking with cold sweat over head and body.

Cures

1. FP6X, CP6X, KP3X, NM3X, MP3X- in hot water, during L.B. P, with, excessive wind and gastric headache.

2. CP6X, KP3X, NM3X, MP3X, Sil. 12X-in hot water during L.B. P, with lack of vital heat in body.

3. CP6X, NM6X, KP6X, -In hot water during L.B. P, with extreme debility, vertigo, chiliness with numbness and coldness of hands and feet.

The above said biochemic combinations may be given with any indicated homoeo medicines as under:

4. Adonis.V. Q IX 3x. 6. In L.B. P. due to weak heart with pain in eyesoccipital headache, slow weak pulse, low vitality, or in L.B. P, due to cardiac asthma with vertigo, precordial pain, palpitation, dropsical swelling, dyspnoea and scanty urine, Adonis.V. Q, 5 drops dose may be give, or alternated with biochemic salts at S. No. 3. for better results.

5. Cactus-Q + Crataegus.Q. (1:3) 10-15 drops dose is a best combination to cure. Extremely L.B. P. due to any cause- stated above. It never failed to raise up the L.B. P, as 1 have seen it in my 20 years homoeo practice.

6. Cactus Q + CrataegusQ+Camphora. IX, (1 : 1 : 1) 10-15 drops dose may be used in extremely L.B. P, after cholera vomiting and diarrhoea.

The cure No. 5, should be kept ready in your pocket to be given in the emergency hours. This combination could be use, ' with any indicated homoeo medicine but the cures No. 6 cannot be used as it contains camphorwhich is an antidote to almost all the homoeo medicines.

7. Alfalfa Q + Aletris. Q-8-10 drops dose 1 in equal ratio, from separate bottlesas they precipitate after 3 days if mixed together in one bottle. Be used before meals and with any indicated homoeo medicine after meals -is a very good combination in the cure of L.B. P. due to gastric derangemerits, excessive flatulence, nervous dyspepsia, nerves weakness and prostration - also in L.B. P. due to excessive leucorrhoea with great tireness and exhaustion in body.

8. Aletris Q + Alstonia Q in equal ration 8-10 drops dose before meals and with any indicated homoeo medicine like Carbo. v, China, Ign, Kali. P. Lyc, Nux.V. etc. be used to loss of bodily fluids i.e. , after copious watery stools, dysentric stools, exhasting diseases- like watery menses, profuse leucorrhoea with feeling of tireness, weariness, sleepiness, drowsiness and nervous depression. In L.B. P, with great anaemia, feeble digestion, simplest food causes distress in stomach Le, flatulency, loose stool immediately after eating.

9. Carbo vegetablis. 6-30.200. In cases of L.B. P. with subnormal temperature, feeling of chills due to lack of vital heat in body, great debility, prostration, from imperfect oxygenation of blood. Vital heat in body is nearly exhausted-causing coldness of lower legs, feet, cold breathing, pulse intermittent, thready with cold sweat on head and body, but even then wants cool fanning. In L.B. P. due to nervous dyspepsia, nervous depression, after great wind in stoamch- belching gives slight relief. Great eructations, heaviness, fulness of stomach, abdomen after meals. Simplest food causes a great distress in the stomach due to slow digestion, food putrefies before it digest. Fulness, distension and distress in the upper abdomen. L.B. P. during profuse menses.

10. China-30. In L.B. P, with sub-normal temperature of the body, after malarial fever, from loss of animal fluids or after exhausting diseases, inability to undergo a least fatigue or exertion- as the patient is having excessive debility and weakness in body. Now with dangling (to swing) of bright golden spots before eyes- whenever standing after little exertion, or after sitting continuously on feet- with numbness and crawling in feet. L.B. P, due to profuse leueorrhoea, copious menses, cold body with cold sweat, chronic diarrhoea with offensive smell containing undigested food particles. Pain in legs, with great weakness after walking or little standing works.

11. Digitalis. 6.30. In cases of extremely L.B. P. due to weak heart, dilated heart with dropsical swelling, great weakness, debility, vertigo when walking or standing from a seat with dark spots like flies dangling before eyes then tendency to fall backward. Great fainting and weakness in the stomach, fainting of heart after little motion, gastric upset, tenderness of epigastrium, nausea after the smell of food, white ashy, pasty loose stools during hepatic troubles- or in L.B. P due to jaundice, hypertrophy of the liver with pain and soreness in the liver region. L.B. P. with very slow weak feeble pulse, quickened by least motion, even talking is felt a great fatigue. Digitalis raises the lowered systolic and diastolic pressures to their normal level quickly when it is alternated with Cactus Q + Crataegus Q. (1 : 3) 10 drops dose after every 2-4 hours.

12. Gelsemium-30. L.B. P, especially in old persons, with dulness drowsiness, dizziness, trembling and weakness of legs, loss of muscular power with great fatigue after little exertion, pains all over the body, pulse slow weak feeble and almost imperceptible with no thirst, pain in head and in eye-balls.

13. Kali. Phos. 30. In L.B. P, with subnormal temperature of the body, great weakness, debility and extreme prostration. Patient is very nervous, having neurasthenia (nerves weakness) worse after mental and physical exertion with extreme lassitude and depression, great dryness of mouth, occipital headache, vertigo when lying on bed or standing up from bed, or when looking upward. Patient is also having anaemic headache, nervous dyspepsia and empty gone feeling in stomach- better by eating- especially noted during nervous dyspepsia or in cases of L.B. P.

14. Kalmia Latifolia 6, 30. In the cases of L.B. P, with slow, weak, pulse, anxiety, fluttering of heart, palpitation worse leaning forward neuralgic shooting pain in the heart region- extends to back upto shoulder blade left side. Shooting and rheumatic joints' pains in the body with numbness in the limbs especially in nervous persons pains in body, or in the back i.e. , lumbar pains of nervous origin. Neuralgic pains shooting down wards with numbless. Great heat in the epigastrium, nausea, vomiting or pain in the pit of stomach worse bending forward better by sitting erect. L.B. Tingling, numbness of left arm and pain along ulnar nerve upto index finger.

15. Lycopodium-30, 200, in cases of L.B. P. due to nervous dyspepsia (see dyspepsia) with palpitation of heart in those cases who are having dry withered, thin slim constitutions full of gas, who lack in vital heat, have poor digestion, poor circulation of blood and poor weak memory with cold extremities. Such persons are worse from 4 to 8 PM due to excessive wind, from farinaceous, starchy and fermentable food- cabbage, beans, onions etc. Little eating causes great distress and fulness in the stomach patient likes more sweets, hot food and drinks.

16. Lycopus-Virginicus-6, 30. In L.B. P, during cardiac asthma, diabetes, after frequent and profuse urination with pre-cordial pain, oppression and constriction in the chest. 17. Silicea. 30, 200. In cases of L.B. P, due to to imperfect or poor assimilation of food- which further produces neurasthenic condition in the body. Patient lacks in vital heat, feels chills in the body, icy cold extremities more in winter, sits near the fire or in the sun to warm up the body. Hot sweating head in summer with offensive foot sweat. L.B. P, after fasting or when avoiding salts in the food. (Nat.m. ) especially in ladies who possess yielding mood- with headache worse after fasting, better by wrapping the head. Very sensitive to cold weather and takes cold easily with sneezing. P. after profuse vomiting, watery stools with cramps in extremities. Great thirst, but the water is vomitted out soon after drinking it. In weakness and L.B. P. after cholera vomiting with headache and icy coldness over the vertex. L.B. P. with dark ring around eyes, profuse menses, patient feels fainted after little exertion. It is a best heart stimulent and helps in raising the lowered systolic and diastolic blood pressures.

19. Viscum. alb. Q IX, 3X, 6, 30. In L.B. P. with great palpitation of heart, pulse slow, feeble and weak, difficulty in breathing when lying on left side. L.B. P. in gouty and rheumatic subjects. Low blood tension, (L.B. P.) due to dialated heart, blood vessels with rheumatic tearing pains in thighs and legs worse in cold weather.

Blood pressure low in pregnancy

Case no. 148

12.8.1980A lady aged 26 years had L.B. P, In pregnancy. She was pregnant for the last 3 months but had already three issues and due to frequent deliveries she had great weakness, debility, slow weak feeble pulse and extremely L.B. P. that was recorded as 100/58 m m volume of mercury. She had great vertigo when standing and walking with great anaemia, pale face and decline in health. She had great heaviness, drowsiness, sleepiness or sleeping. sickness and wanted to sleep all the time- due to low B. P, with lack of vital heat in body, headache, great weakness, debility and sinking of strength, heaviness of legs, felt great tireness after little exertion. Fainting, collapsing and palpitation of heart during motion, crawling pain with coldness and numbness of legs, arms feet better by pressure and rubbing.

Cactus Q + Crataegus Q (1:3). 10 drops dose in alternation with CP6X, KP3X, NM3X, MP3X, Sil. 12X-4 grains dose in hot water every 2-4 hours.

On 13.8.1980, B.P. was recorded as 118/76 with great relief and cure in other troubles. Same medicines were repeated for two days more and B. P was recorded as 120/80 m m volume of mercury.

Case no. 149

27.4.1984 A lady of 42, was suffering from extremely L.B. P. which was, recorded as 88/50 with great heaviness of head, weakness, drowsiness, pulse was very weak and low. She had severe pain in eye balls and frontal headache due to gastric upset and excessive wind in stomach.

Spoon hot water, 2 doses were repeated after every one hour. AT 12 PM. again 15 drops dose of mother tinctures was given and further was repeated in alternation with said salts after every 2 hours, with the result, blood pressure of the patient was raised upto normal i.e. , 114/80 m m of mercury at 8 PM. night. This treatment shows that how biochemic salts and homoeo medicines acted promptly in normalising the blood pressure.

Blood pressure low after diarrhoea

Case no. 150

16.8.1984 One of my friends aged 55 had acute diarrhoea in the morning with L.B. P, recorded as 110170. He had great weakness, debility with sinking of strength, vertigo, cold sweat on head, fainting feeling during motion. It was hot summer season, patient suffered from dyspepsia, and diarrhoea with nervous prostration, chilliness and coldness of extremities. Giddiness, with weak pulse, and vertigo when walking. Cactus Q + Crataefy- Q. (1 : 3) 10 drops dose in cold water after every 2-4 hours and patient became normal within two days.

Case no. 151

Great pressure and weight on head, better by sitting erect and pressing the head. Patient had red hot face, burning feet, with great thirst,

Cactus Q + Crataegus Q (1:3) 10 drops dose in 3 T. Spoon cold water in alternation with Kaliphos-30. after every one hour, 2 doses of each gave relief in the headache upto 6 PM. But after taking meals at night, she had again violent headache on the vertex-chamomilla. Q, one drop dose, 2 doses were given in 3 T Spoon cold water, after every 30 minutes. Patient felt great relief, in the headache. Patient was feeling great restless, sleeplessness at night:

Cactus Q + Crataegus Q + Passiflora Q (1 A A) 15 drops dose, in cold water induced sound sleep at night.

On 6.12.1986. Patient had no headache in the morning, except heaviness of head. Kaliphos-30 in alternation with Cactus Q + Crataegus Q - 10 drops dose after every 4 hours made the blood pressure normal- ie. 126/80 m m volume of mercury- within two days.

Blood pressure low with chills and yawning

Case no. 152

28.11.1986 My wife aged 44, had L.B. P, with frequent attacks of chills, yawning and stretching, always worse in the evening, during sleep at night. She tried to cover the body with heavy blankets warmed the body with hot bottles, wrapped her head warmly as she was feeling headache in cold.

CP6X, KP6X, NM6X-, 4 grains dose in hot water at 7 PM, and patient felt relief in the creeping chills and slept normally at night.

On 29.11.1986, Silicea-200 one dose at 8 A.M. and CP6X, KP6X, NM6X, -4 grains dose after every 4 hours. Such treatment was repeated for 3 days and patient's B. P was raised upto 116/80.

L.b. p. and gastric headache

Case no. 153

29.6.1984 A lady of 42, had lowered blood pressure- 98160 m m volume of mercury with violent pain in the temporal region, heaviness of head, throbbing pains in eyes, shooting pain at the vertex, which was extending to forehead and occiput. She had great dryness of mouth, fainting feeling, heaviness of left shoulder down left arm due to excessive flatulence and gastric upset in the whole of abdomen.

Alfalfa Q + Avena Q, 10 drops dose in 3 T. Spoon cold water gave some relief in the headache. After one hour -Cactus Q Crataegus Q (1 : 3) 10 drops at 5 PM. and 5.30 PM. Lycopus. V. 6, one dose at 6 PM. with the result, headache was completely cured within one and half hours. B.P. was raised upto 106/76. AT 8 PM. Lycopus.V. 30, one dose only.

On 30.6.1984. B.P. was raised up as 120/80 m m volume of mercury.

L.b. p. after abortion

Blood pressure lowered -a tendency

Case no. 155

9.6.1986 Smt. X-aged 30 years used to have low blood pressure 96/60m m volume of mercury with crawling sensation - as if ants were running in all limbs of the body, hands and feet when sitting, heaviness of head, headache at the vertex. She used to have chronic diarrhoea, frequent stools) containing undigested food particles-3 to 4 loose stools daily- caused great weakness, debility, worse in the morning and after every loose stool. Loose stools worse after eating food. She had great flatulence, rumbling of gas in the bowels, loss of appetite, but every thing eaten turned into gas with great distention of abdomen, worse after drinking cold water, tea. or eating of flatulent food- all such ailments and troubles as stated above, were responsible to have a tendency of L.B. P. in the patient.

China. 30. One dose daily for 7 days. CP6X, KP6X, NM6X, -4 grains dose after every 4 hours.

On 16.4.1986. Patient was completely cured of diarrhoea, with great relief in excessive wind, and distension of abdomen. B.P. was raised upto 110/76 m m of mercury. Now china-200, one every week and above bio-salts, morning and evening cured the patient completely within 3 weeks more.

B.p. lowered after fasting

Case no. 156

1.3.1988 Smt. Ch. Jain of 38, had extremely low blood pressure 90/60 m m volumeof mercury, with drawing pains in eyes, pain in eyes over supra-orbital areas, vertigo when seeing above. She was feeling great chills. Wanted to sleep every time, great drowsiness, sleepiness, weakness, debility and prostration, great thirst, dryness of mouth, avoided talking as she felt exhausted. She had slow weak pulse, fluttering of heart with numbness of limbs hands and feet. Pain In the pit of stomach with pains in the joints of the body. She used to have fast I rig daily, ate less to avoid obesity.

Kalmia. 30, Kaliphos. 30

Cactus Q + Crataegus Q (1 : 3), 10 drops dose. All the three medicines were repeated after every 1-2 hours and patient became normal within 3 days.

L.b. p. after cholera

Case no. 157

A Young man of 20, was suffering from Cholera since morning 8 A.M. He had profuse vomiting, copious rice, watery diarrhoea, worse after drinking cold water. He had great thirst, and icy cold extremities- especially fingers, both hands and feet, nose cars and vertex with crampy pains in calves of legs and thighs. He was too weak to walk or to get up for further evacuation of the bowels. Pulse was very slow, feeble with extreme dehydration and greatly lowered B.P. upto 96/60.

Camphora-3x, 5 drops dose, Cactus Q + Crataegus Q. (1 : 3) 10 drops dose both were repeated after every 10-15 minutes, and two doses of each gave good strength in body. After this veratrum alb. 3 every 10 minutes and patient was well by 60% upto 10 A.M. He had no vomiting and watery stools after this Veratrum alb. 6, was repeated after 2- 4 hours and patient became quite normal within next two days.

Blood pressure lowered during dream

Case no. 158

23.9.1979 This case has been copied from my first book, "Unique combinations with clinical cases in Homoeopathy-which reads as under:

My mother aged 72, started crying suddenly during sleep at night due to seeing of a fearful dream. She cried and woke up with great sinking and fainting of heart, slow, weak imperceptible pulse, cold sweat on head body and B. P. was greatly lowered down along with fear of death. She had chronic deafness, dry cough, constipation. She had gouty stiffness of joints shoulders.

Viscum alb. Q-10 drops dose in 3T. Spoon cold water and my mother became normal within 10 minutes, and slept again at night.

Vertigo

Tall, thin children frequently complain of orthostatic hypotension—low blood pressure upon arising—that causes vertigo. When they rise quickly from a reclining position, especially when they are hot, they feel light-headed and dizzy, as if their feet do not touch the ground.

Older girls may also feel this way when they menstruate heavily.
Pulsatilla pratensis

Vertigo

The closest these children approach vertigo is orthostatic hypotension, which commonly occurs in closed rooms where the air is still. When they bend over and reach down for a book on a low shelf in the library, for instance, dizziness can occur.
Sulphur

Vertigo

Adolescent boys who grow tall quickly may sometimes have symptoms of orthostatic hypotension in conjunction with vertigo, visual loss, and tinnitus. This is especially noted if they are in a warm place. They may be bothered by dizziness when they arise, sit up quickly, or stand for a long time.

Homoeopathic medication in heart disease (G.W. Boericke)

Plumbum metallicum--presents a picture of general arterio- sclerosis, often with paresis of single muscles such as those of the extremities and legs. Patient is apt to be definitely anemia and mentally exhibits slow perception and cerebral anemic. Essential hypotension in the early decompensated stage with marked frequency of urination especially at night. The cardiac field is one of degeneration with slow pulse, poor myocardial tone, and a high degree of constipation is usually seen in these patients.

Arterial hypertension

Arterial hypertension (F. Cartier)

St. Petersburg, Florida.

Hypertension, ateriosclerosis

Synonym: Full, hard pulse.

Terminology: English: High blood pressure. German: Cross spanning.

Spanish. Hypertension, Italian: Hypertension.

The inequality of the blood pressure does not constitute a special disease, but a pathological condition which is met in a great number of diseases and which plays a more and more important role in modern therapeutics. It is important then, to keep an eye on it, and it is not exaggeration to say that it is wise to examine ones blood pressure from time to time for the enjoyment of long life.

In a number of disease the measurement of the pressure facilitates the choice of the remedy. At the very onset we will group some medicaments together, and eliminate others that are similar, but absolutely useless, if not harmful.

In conserving the ordinary symptomatology of the remedy, one also adds a characteristic symptom which dissipates the uncertainty, and then proceeds more surely and directly to the suitable medicine. Thus, a remedy is not prescribed for a fever. There are fevers with hypertension and fevers with hypotension. there is a group of remedies for sthenic fevers and a group of remedies for adynamic fevers: and even if the remedy suits all the symptoms, one tends to be mistaken if the remedy aggravates the blood pressure already charged. For example, ACONITE is a remedy for hypertension; it is useless and harmful to employ ACONITE in diseases with hypotension, even the other symptoms indicate ACONITE.

In disease of the heart and blood vessels, in some conditions of the lungs, without taking into account a number of other diseases, the study of the blood pressure becomes the key to the therapeutics. It is important that the homoeopathic school of practice should not remain behind in this modern research, and in the face of the practice of contraries by the dominant school. For the regulation of the blood pressure, we are able to offer the action of similars, that is to say, the cure of hypertension by hypertensors, and of hypotension by hypotensors. How do we arrive at such opposite conclusion? By the modification of the doses. A substance which is hypertensive in strong doses becomes hypotensive in feeble doses or vice versa. One can almost be sure that not a single agent exist which changes the pressure that does not show opposed phenomena during various phases of its action.

This confirmation of physiological law is admitted by all physiologists and therapeutics who use the contrary action a poison according to its degree of intoxication. This fundamental law if found again in therapeutics: the same remedy which is hypotensive in large doses becomes hypertensive in small (homoeopathic) doses and vice versa.

Let us then consider a certain number of substances having an action on the blood pressure, and study their degree of homoeopathicity according to three points: 1st. their action as modifiers of the pressure in the category of hypertensors or of hypotensors; 2nd. their affinity for certain organs-kidneys, lungs, brain, uterus, etc; 3rd. their mode of action: nerve poisons, muscle poisons, of the myocardium, or of the muscular walls of the arteries, vaso-constrictor or vaso-dilators of the arterioles, etc.

This is not all: a system of glands having internal secretions (the suprarenal capsules, pituitary gland, thyroid gland) play a role in this regulation.

There are even external secretions which modify the tension in the vessels: bile for example, and spermine. It is then an ensemble of phenomena which contributes in the regulation of this tension, and the last word is not yet said on his subject.

We will consider substances having a hypertensive action and consequently homoeopathic to this condition.

ACONITUM NAPELLUS stands at the top, perhaps the principal medicament in the present condition of homoeopathic science for acting quickly in cases of acute hypertension. In always remains useful in the acute phases of chronic hypertension or at the beginning of treatment. Clinical experience confirms it every day, and there are numerous cases where the blood pressure has fallen as measured by the sphygmomanometer.

POUCHET in his PHARMACODYNAMICS say "ACONITE, and especially ACONITE, have an influence on the peripheral circulation through nervous system which is shown by its effects on the heart and circulation. The contractility of the myocardium is conserved during the whole duration of the action of Aconitine. At the beginning, the pulse is full, vibrant, with more or less marked rhythmic contractions to such a degree that there is a persistence of the contractility of the myocardium even at a late period. In nearly all sphygmographic tracings reported, an increase of the force and number of contractions have even doubled the primary rhythm. At the beginning, under the influence of very small doses, the blood pressure increases and later it still increases. It is only in the last phase of its action that one observes a circulatory depression.".

In our homoeopathic school, Hahnemann, in 1796, spoke of it in Hufelands Journal, and later, i 1811, in his Materia Medica mentions a group of drug that would produce alternate chills and heat, at the head of which he placed ACONITE.

At that time we were far from the modern science of today, but Hahnemann in his time had some idea of it.

He clearly indicated the circulatory action of ACONITE. Since Hahnemann, all homoeopaths have prescribed Aconite, being guided by the indications of a full, bounding, vibrating pulse: so when bleeding was done for almost everything, Aconite was called the homoeopathic lancet.

This action of ACONITE has not failed for a century and it is astonishing that most physicians hardly ever use the hypertensive action of Aconite.

It may by summed up by this expression: for acting quickly and rapidly in a case of acute hypertension, nothing equals it. Aconite is then suitable for acute cases which still have no profound lesions; for in its intoxication the changes in the tissues are not very evident if at all. Its power is entirely functional; it poisons the cerebro-spinal nervous system. Congestion of the endocardium and pericardium may be found, but it has not produced arterial lesions like the chloride of barium, adrenaline, lead, tobacco, etc.

As Dr. Richard Hughes said, the predominating condition for the use of Aconite is one of tension: tension of the pulse, tension of the arteries, tension of the pulse, tension of the arteries, tension of the arterioles, which causes the characteristic tingling of the extremities, of the fingers and of the tongue caused by excitation of the sensibility of the peripheral organs. Its points of election, outside of the peripheral organs are the brain and nervous centers. Aconites mental characteristics are great anxiety, restlessness, fear, and fear of death.

This subject of hypertension shows in a remarkable way the excellent properties of Aconite in the first stage of fever, in the sthenic period, congestive, with the skin hot and burning, the pulse full, tense, bounding and frequent, the real period of febrile hypertension. I would emphasize also the premonitory period of chills; where vaso-constriction of capillaries raises the tension in the larger vessels.

ACONITE always remains the first remedy for reducing blood pressure, and it prevents subsequent congestion.

Thanks also to the study of blood pressure, we are warned of the uselessness of Aconite in adynamic fevers where hypotension is marked: Aconite becomes then a danger. For examples, Aconite must be listed as always contraindicated in typhoid fever, because it is a fever with hypotension.

I would always recommend Aconite for the sthenic heart which is overworked and which lead to hypertrophy, and even in the clearly confirmed hypertrophy of youth. Nothing equals. Aconite in these forms of cardiopathies where the heart still has not undergone degeneration.

The impulse of the blood waves is felt throughout the arterial system; beating of the carotid arteries, pulse bounding, dilatation and elongation of the arteries; the patient complains of palpitation, constriction, suffocation, precordial anxiety, attacks of dyspnoea.

It remained for the sphygmomanometer to verify the action of Aconite in homoeopathic doses. Examples of the reduction of a blood pressure form 180mm- 200mm. to normal, and others lowered somewhat, but not to normal. These observations have been confirmed many times. How long does the action of Aconite last? That is difficult to say. The duration of the action of a remedy varies according to the disease.

A hypertension without lesions can be cured in an illimitable way. In arteriosclerotic individuals we can lower the blood pressure for several days or weeks, perhaps some months in certain cases, but the arteries bring a return of the hypertension.

I would also like to mention the remarkable action of Aconite in the strained heart or asystole without lesion. Nothing is more illuminating than the comparison of the overworked heart with the proving of Aconite. We can help runners, athletes, fliers, and all persons who overwork their hearts with this remedy given in potentized form. "These sportsmen have early or confirmed hypertension and gradually develop asystole and a dangerous hypotension. Without suffering the consequences like some of the Marathon runners, numerous young persons strain and overwork their hearts in milder sports or in betting matches which may become dangerous. This prepares the way for cardiac hypertrophy. In these cases I know of no better remedy than Aconite for quick action in calming a tumultuous heart with a rapid pulse and bringing it back to normal, and also arresting the consequences of the overworked heart. The law of similars is again verified here. The symptoms of the strained heart appear rapidly, and the action of Aconite is rapid in its effect.

The nearest, similar to Aconite in these cases is perhaps ARNICA; but Arnica acts much slower.

We have spoken of hypertension without lesions. We should remember that Aconite is most efficacious in the beginning of endocarditis, pericarditis with hypertension. Aconite will always remain the remedy for the beginning of these affections, and it is useful even in the acute exacerbations of subacute or chronic disease.

In arteriosclerosis, a very high blood pressure can be reduced from time to time by the use of Aconite for a few days to a week and repeated at intervals as required.

It is the remedy for plethoric individuals and their various diseases, as colds, at the beginning of many inflammatory troubles, early respiratory ailments especially. Also for cerebral hypertension and vertigo of plethoric patients. It is the remedy for cerebral haemorrhages where one has noted symptoms of hypertension.

In conclusion, ACONITE is one of our great remedies for acute rapid hypertension as confirmed clinically and by the sphygmomanometer.

Some members of the solanaceae family resemble Aconite. Delphinine, the active principal of the Delphinium staphysagria, has great similarity, both approaching Veratrine (Pouchet).

In what doses should Aconite be given for hypertension? Certainly not in the mother tincture which would only end by fatiguing the heart muscles. It is the Hahnemannian dose that it is necessary to prescribe, the 6 centesimal, 12. centesimal or the 30 centesimal. We usually prescribed the 6. or the 30. centesimal dilution on disks or diskettes.

BELLADONNA, or rather its alkaloid atropine, may cause lowering of the blood pressure (very brief and only occasionally demonstrated), followed by an extraordinary rapid pulse with a great increase of the arterial pressure. After a certain time, if the dose has been sufficient, there is noted a progressive lowering of the pressure until death. The rapidity of the pulse lasts until the end. In atropining animals the pulse is not modified, neither by section nor by galvanism. According to the best authorities, Atropine increases the vascular tension, dilates the arteries and capillaries and increases the energy of ventricular contractions. Luchsinger attributes the enormous increase of the pulsations to paralysis of the intra-cardiac ends of the pneumogastric nerve.

Von Renterghem attributes the redness of the face and upper parts of the body to rapidity of the pulse and increase of he blood pressure. Belladonna resembles Aconite quite a little in some ways, so why is Belladonna less suitable than Aconite to human hypertension? The reason is that Aconite is a more general hypertensor than Belladonna. Belladonna has a special localization, its characteristic is hypertension of the upper part of the body-the head, the brain, the neck, the eyes, etc., shown clearly by physiological and clinical evidence. In acute hypertension of the brain, with delirium, agitation, encephalitis or congestion, Belladonna is really more homoeopathic than Aconite, but it does not possess the general action of Aconite on the heart, blood vessels and capillaries of the entire body. both remedies suit acute cases, and act on nerves rapidly. Both remedies cause death in poisonous doses before there is any evidence of tissue changes, except congestion.

Atropine is the antagonist of Morphine. Muscarine is also an antagonist to Atropine.

BARYTA CARBONICA and BARYTA MURIATICA, are hypertensors and consequently are homoeopathic to hypertension which I will discuss further in detail in my article on "Arteriosclerosis.".

These drugs are of great important, not only for hypertension, but for arterial lesions as well. Clinical observations are multiplied and verified from day to day.

ADRENALINE, Sajous, in his remarkable work and study, has shown the connection among three glands of internal secretion (the suprarenal capsules, the pituitary glands and thyroid gland) and their importance in vascular tension. Everyone knows that in Addisons disease where the glandular secretion is lessened and vitiated one notes extreme hypotensive phenomena; and when adrenaline solution is injected into a vein a great increase in blood pressure followed promptly.

Similar phenomena are seen with an extract taken from the posterior body of the pituitary gland. This extract given in infinitesimal doses, recording to the law of similars, has been recommended in the treatment of arteriosclerosis.

Cholesterin in the blood increases vascular tension, and note, also the association of hypertension with Cholesteremia.

The laboratory has shown clearly that Cinchona products increase Cholesterin in the blood, and acting on the principle of similars, CHINA in potency has proved one of the first remedies in Cholesteremia.

CHOLESTERINUM in homoeopathic dilution, should play a role as an isotherapeutic agent.

OPIUM 3. trituration has a slight increase in the pulse rate, followed by a slow, full pulse which is characteristics, as well as drowsiness and cerebral torpor. It becomes homoeopathic to these cerebral phenomena due to exaggeration of the blood pressure.

GLONOINE 3. centesimal is one of the principal remedies for acute exacerbations during the course of chronic hypertension, as in patients with chronic aortitis or chronic nephritis.

ARNICA 12. and 30. centesimal has a full, tense pulse. It is a a remedy having a slow action, acting on the muscles, on the myocardium and muscular walls of the vessels. It is especially and especially recommended after Aconite for subacute or chronic hypertension due to cardiac strain or overwork. The action of the Arnica extends to the blood capillaries causing venous stasis secondarily, and considerable peripheral resistance in the arterial circulation, thus provoking sudden hypertensive attacks, often ending in extravasation of blood.

CAFFEINE, Coffea, is a remarkable example of the contrary effects of the same medicament according to the doses employed. Whereas Caffeine is an energetic drug for increasing the pulse rate and raising the blood pressure, Coffea given in homoeopathic doses, is a valuable remedy for cardiac irritability often a forerunner of hypertension.

PULSATILLA. The active principle of Pulsatilla, Anemoxine, acts on the circulation. It is to be regretted that physiological research has not been specially directed to the blood pressure of the genital organs of the female.

SECALE CORNUTUM possesses a characteristic action on the striated muscular fibers of the uterus causing arterial hypertension in the large vessels.

Lastly, all the tonics of the heart used by the Old School are hypertensors and should be employed regularly by homoeopaths in infinitesimal doses against hypertension. Strophanthus, Crataegus, Adonis, Convallaria, etc., and animal products, such as those of the salamander, serum danguille, etc.

Have we constitutional remedies to combat hypertension? This is precisely what we are endeavoring to demonstrate.

The Nux Vomica patient is frequently the type of person who is a subject for hypertension. Further, the action of its alkaloid, Strychnine, is distinctly hypertensive. The Nux temperament is that of the business man, the sedentary intellectual, those who do not take time to eat, and who constantly in a nervous state are preparing themselves for permanent hypertension. Every physician knows that intellectual and physical over-work are factors in the production of hypertension and arteriosclerosis.

Then there is the LYCOPODIUM patient, the arthritic, who does not metabolize certain proteins properly and develops uric acid, which poisons him slowly, and who ends with arteriosclerosis.

The Sulphur patient is another type of the arthritic diathesis with cutaneous manifestations and internal metastases. Also eczematous patients, who from time to time have attacks of asthma or gravel, and end with arterial hypertension.

AURUM and AURUM IODATUM are especially indicated when there is a history of syphilis, a syphilitic background.

LACHESIS and SANGUINARIA canadensis should be studied at the time of the menopause in women, who develop a compensatory hypertension.

Sanguinaria has a longer duration than Lachesis. It acts more surely.

Lachesis has as its characteristic, cutaneous hyperesthesia, where the patient finds it impossible to have anything touch the neck, so that it must be kept uncovered.

Lastly, a hypertensive individual should exercise moderately in the open air. If he is old, he should exercise according to his age; if he is young, he should exercise according to his strength-this is one of the best means to improve the circulation in the capillaries.

Hot or warm baths favor dilatation of the capillaries and are hypotensors; cold baths contract the capillaries and are hypertensors.

Pardon me for not mentioning diets and physical agents which are in most books on the practice of medicine. A milk diet is known as a hypotensor.

Alcohol, tobacco and coffee should be used very sparingly, if at all. All these are more or less toxic to most persons and it is better to abstain from their use entirely.

A case of arthritis

Nitin samant, bombay

Arthritis

Case

Mrs. S. R. 42 year old housewife, stays with her husband, 3 sons, one daughter, and 3 daughters-in-law; she consulted me in Feb. 94 with the following complaints:

1) Severe pain and swelling of right wrist joint since six yrs. Recently got worse. Occasionally pains shift to finger joints. Modalities:

agg. evening

agg. winter

agg. rain

agg. open air, cold winds

amel. after menses for a few days.

2) Insomnia for one year. When sleepless she becomes restless, anxious, thirsty, perspires a lot..

3) Small eruptions and boils on right leg since one year, itching agg. draft of air.

4) Hypotension. Occasionally faint feeling, weakness. Irritability increases when B.P. is low.

5) Eructations, flatulence, pain in abdomen since six months, agg. stools, agg. bending double.

6) Constipation since 2 days.

Cravings: Vegetables, dal (lentils).

Aversion: sweets.

Will not eat any food outside.

Thermal state: Sometimes not and at times chilly. Generally symptoms are agg. cold and damp weather.

Urine: Hot urine with burning at times. Presently no complaint.

Menses - Delayed; every two months. Profuse, feels she will faint. Generally feels better for a few days after her period.

Mentals: Recently has become irritable. Irritability agg. touch, noise. Noise leads to palpitations.

If children make too much noise in the house, she sits outside. Prefers silence. Anxiety and restlessness is much worse when B.P. is low. When not well, she will just lie down in her room. Prefers to be alone.

"I don't weep easily. I am the eldest in the family, so how can I cry?"

She has tremendous anxiety about her health. Because of her wrist problem, she cannot do any work. Therefore wants quick relief.

At home, her daughters-in-law and servants do all the work. She only does minor things. When she is occupied with something, she feels better. She is very anxious and restless and at times feels that she will never be all right.

Very particular about neatness and cleanliness, but not obstinate. "I listen to everyone. Only I can't tolerate if someone says something to me, I shout back at them".

I like to be alone. I even go to the village alone. I have no fears

I never quarrel with anyone, as I feel it is below my dignity to do so. I can mix with people easily. Whenever I don't get sleep, I become very restless, but I try to lie down in bed and do not like to disturb anyone. Throughout the day, I don't talk about my problems to anyone, and at night I keep thinking about them.

I often think about the past when I was in good health and did everything myself. I am worried as to what will happen now, but don't feel like troubling others with my problems.

I don't go out much. I prefer to be at home even when others are out.

Impression:

Throughout the interview the patient spoke only about herself. She did not mention anything about her family members, their nature, any family problems and not even a word about her husband. Though I tried to enquire about it, she used to come back to herself. I found this involvement in her own self very peculiar.

One word that struck me was 'self-centred':

The medicine given was Senecio amens.

In Phatak's Repertory under 'Self Centred' is only Senecio.

Other rubrics from Synthetic Repertory:

Aversion to members of family.

Cheerful alternating with sadness.

Ecstasy alternating with sadness.

Hysteria, night.

Homesickness (doesn't like to go out).

Concentration difficult (Restless).

Restlessness at night.

Sadness in evening.

Thoughts of future.

Changeable mood.

Inability to fix mind upon any one subject (Restless).

Physical symptoms (From Phatak's M.M. ):

Nervous, pale, weak and sleepless hysterical women.

Haemorrhagic tendency.

Dropsy after haemorrhage.

Complaints from suppressed or delayed menses.

Generally:

amel. menstruation.

agg. dampness, cold open air, sitting.

amel. moving about (mind).

Menorrhagia, copious flow continues till she becomes anaemic.

Aversion sweets.

Wandering rheumatic pains.

Sleepless women with uterine troubles.

DD: Self-centred - A person who concentrates on oneself but doesn't cause harm to others.

Selfish - This person can cause harm to others for his own benefit.

Treatment - 9th Feb '94 - Senecio 200, four doses.

Follow up 16th Feb. '94:

Generally amel.. Sleep improved. Joint pains amel. 25%. Fever on 16th with slight chills.

Placebo given.

9th March '94: Not much improvement. Sleepless 2-3 days.

Senecio 200 four doses.

13th May '94: for two months patient had greatly improved. Sleep good. Eruptions on legs disappeared. No hypotensive episodes anymore. Wrist joint still painful.

Senecio M - 2 doses; again repeated on 7th Sept. '94. Last follow up - 25th Nov. '94.

No major complaints. Sleep is sound. Generally much amel.. No weakness. Occasionally wrist joint pain, but can do all work.

Situation of senecio

A woman at pre menopausal age. Her children are grown up and are busy with their own lives. The Senecio lady is very sensitive and knows that she no longer has control over them therefore, instead of confrontations, she prefers to be aloof. She doesn't want any troubles in the house. So she hands over all the charge to her sons and concentrates the rest of her life on her own self (self-centred). She doesn't want to trouble others with her sufferings, thus throughout the day she appears to be happy and at night when alone becomes sleepless, restless, anxious with thoughts about the future.

Differentiation from Sepia:

Senecio being a plant remedy has marked sensitivity and therefore there is no interference with others. Sepia is an animal remedy, therefore has a quarrelsome nature and an attitude to fight back which is missing in Senecio.

Also Senecio has a smooth family life while Sepia has a miserable existence.

Editorial comments

Dr. Nitin Samant often prescribes uncommon remedies and tries to evolve a possible situational materia medica for those remedies. Situational materia medica is an imaginary situation in which the symptoms of a particular remedy can be seen as a survival response. Such a study while being useful, can also limit our vision, unless we can see that there can be other situations true for the same set of symptoms.

Sore nates

Bleeding piles and anus fissure.

Lacticum is a remedy for girlish people.

They like to play with dolls and dress like girls with ribbons and ponytails.

- childish: dependent, not fully grown: every change in life to more independence and responsibility is a possible problem (college, job). They want support and compliments. Of course the opposite is also possible: then they don't want to be treated as a little girl.

- feminine: woman are allowed to behave in a more childish manner in our society, and in sexual abuse there is often a stagnation of the emotional development. So it is understandable that woman need lacticums more often then men. They also have a more lactic acid physiologically (in the breast feeding and the vagina).

Mind

Patients needing this remedy are childish and immature. They would like to stay a child, a girl all their life.

They can behave in a childish manner with a high pitched voice. In children you see a desire to play with dolls, playing 'mother', clothing, feeding and putting their dolls to bed. They are attached to their mother. They weep easily, are "sweet", childish but can also be sharp. Affection (add in the rubric).

As an adult they have no desire for responsibility, yes even avoid it. If supported and told what to do, they can achieve results, especially if they are praised. But on their own they prefer to avoid tasks and criticism. They are afraid to make mistakes.

Bambusa arundinacea

An important remedy for 'ailments after parturition'

Bernd schuster, germany

Case 2

Metrorrhagia while nursing.

In January 1995 a 31 year old woman consulted me because she had become nervous and irritable after the birth of her third child one month earlier.

She tends to get extremely angry, she shouts at her children and cannot stand any contradiction. She easily feels attacked and hurt. Not long ago she had repeated quarrels and differences of opinion with her husband, which still worries her. The husband used bad language and she could not retaliate.

She felt very hurt and did not talk to him for days.

Her whole life situation is very strained (weeps) because her husband has set up his own business and has to work very hard for his living. She always has a bad conscience regarding the children because of the quarrels. She realises that the children are afraid that their parents might divorce.

She is very sensitive and cannot watch creepy or frightening films, especially films with 'aliens'.

There is no space for the nicer side of life, no space for relaxation. She often feels a retching sensation in the stomach, and has a craving for sharp spices.

She has a sharp nose and can smell what the children have been eating by the smell of their clothes. Repeated stitching backaches in the lumbar region and the sensation as if her back is breaking.

The pregnancy, which was not planned, the childbirth and the care for the baby created an additional burden. Standing up after sitting causes dizziness from hypotension. She would never drink so much alcohol that she would lose control.

Cannot vomit when she feels sick. Complaints from haemorrhoids since the last pregnancy. The mother of the patient suffers from severe psoriasis, she also has a renal insufficiency and needs dialysis.

As a baby she suffered from eczema. One of her daughters has this disease too. The patient has a troublesome relationship with her mother, there is also an incompatibility of milk. She moved away from home when she was 18.

Prescription:

Nux vomica LM6 for a period of four weeks (once a day dil. 1) with good results. She became steady and well-balanced again and was more able to cope with the tense situation at home.

When she was breast feeding her little daughter she developed mastitis. The milk was thick and viscid. In March 1995 I prescribed Phytolacca C200 which cured her immediately.

In August 1995 the patient consulted me again. She reported that six months after parturition, when she was still breast feeding the little girl at night, she had her first menstruation. It did not stop, however, but continued spotting over a period of more than two months. Before menstruation she noted the growth of some nodes in the mammae. Because of the breast feeding the gynaecologist did not want to treat her allopathically and was of the opinion that the bleeding would stop on its own, which unfortunately did not happen.

Apart from this problem the irritability, the feeling of being overstrained and forsaken, and the feeling that 'it is all too much for her' is still very prevalent. During the consultation the patient constantly massaged her neck which was extremely tense.

Stitching pains in hands and feet. A hallux valgus is inflamed and aching. Sensation as if the vertebral column were made of glass and could break. Hungry at night. She cannot stand clothes around her neck.

She has a problem with possessive closeness or too much intimacy in a relationship, which was discussed in earlier consultations.

Repertorisation

• Mind; Forsaken feeling

• Mind; Overstrained, overburdened, feeling as if (!)

• Female; Metrorrhagia; nursing the child

• Mind; Quarrelsomeness, scolding; trifles about (!)

• Mind; Laughing; never

• Back; Pain; General; Cervical region.

I gave her Bamboo C6, which comes up in all rubrics, with the instruction to dissolve three globuli in some water every day and to drink it in three little sips.

Follow-up

Bamboo stopped the bleeding within one day. The patient felt very well! The irritability and fear of being unable to manage things disappeared. More stable feeling in the vertebral column. The C6 was stopped after three days.

Ten weeks later the patient came to me again. She had a minor metrorrhagia during the days around ovulation. She had to wear a sanitary towel and was very unhappy about the menstrual disorder. The irritability, dissatisfaction and overstrain became obvious again in the course of our conversation.

Basically the above rubrics were still applicable.

I prescribed Bamboo C200 dissolved in water, five times one tea-spoonful.

After a short time there was an amelioration of the mental symptoms and during the following months she had regular menstruation and no spotting during ovulation.

Eleven months after the first dose of Bamboo the symptoms returned, more or less the same as before. There were also two new symptoms, a stiffness of the right hand in the morning and an eruption on the eyelids. She is feeling dissatisfied again and is scolding about trifles.

Prescription: Bamboo Q6 dil. 1.

After that, she felt fine again.

Especially interesting in this case history is the rubric 'Female genitalia; metrorrhagia while nursing' which only shows Silica in the original Kent. (Additions: calc., phos., rhus-t.) This is a further indication of the similarity between Bamboo and Silica.

Lysimachia nummularia (M. Italiano)

PRINCIPLE SUBSTANCES: Saponins, mucilages, tannins, leukocyanidins, and flavonoids.

This plant contains two saponins in its roots and stems, the primaverasi enzyme and a remarkable amount of silica (26,8:100).

The so-called 'primrose wine', obtained by putting the flowers in a bottle of white wine, helps to improve blood circulation.
Little reminder

A few notes to remind us about saponins:

Saponins are glycosides, substances that by acid or enzymatic hydrolysis, produce one or more molecules of sugar equal or different, often glucose and one or more molecules of non-sacchariferous and non-protein substances called aglycones. Saponins have no basic reactions in a water solution. They do not contain nitrogen, and being surface-active agents, they easily originate foams. They enhance the cell membrane permeability and thus many saponins are haemolytic, expectorant (polygala), and emetic. Some of them are the precursors of sexual and cortisone hormones. The Aglycone changes its name into sapogenin while the sugar is varied. Other saponins produce erythrocytolysis as a reaction to plasmalemma cholesterol. They can pass the intestinal mucous membrane provided that it is injured (enteritis). The aglycone of some glycosides is made up of essential oils or often by isothiocynates capable of causing serious disorders through milk such as diarrhoea and gastroenteric symptoms, or hypotension.

They are commonly divided into steroids and terpenic plants (liquorice, ginseng, ivy, pokeweed and lucerne). Their function appears to be mainly allelochemical, a term indicating the function that some substances produced by the plant have on the surrounding environment, as if they settle the relationships with surrounding living elements. In fact, there is a positive allelochemical function and a negative one, depending on the allowance or inhibition of the presence of particular living forms around the plant itself. About the possibility of an analogy between the plant 'behavior' and relationships and those of the patient to be treated with it, I believe an important chapter of evaluation and comparison could be opened, which I would call 'signature dynamic'. This new way of reading the plant behavior habits from the biochemistry point of view could enable us to reduce possible analogies that fatally become metaphors, and thus are useless for science and knowledge purposes. Nevertheless metaphors and myths can guide us in finding out the real analogic connection. That is knowledge, indeed!

Metaphors and Myths

The term Lysimachia derives from the name of the city founded as the Thrace satrapy capital by Lysimachus, a general of Alexander the Great who gave it to him as a reward.

Historical research about late Medieval and Renaissance tradition report:

- 'against this blood profluvium, Lysimachia juice is used to bring relief.' Ser Zucchero Bencivenni (Crusca Academy) 1300, taken from the Trattato di medicina di maestro Aldobrandino da Siena.

- 'Lysimachia heals fresh wounds.' Cristoforo Landino Fiorentino, taken from the Commentario sopra la Divina Commedia di Dante Alighieri. Venice 1520.

- 'reptiles escape from Lysimachia smell.' Plinio, taken from Historia Naturale.

We should also notice the morphology and action analogies and relationships with the mineral kingdom:

- Lysimachus is the black Diaspore with yellow veins. (The color refers to the flower.)

- 'Lysimachus among the marbles, is that stone with veins, that is to say golden drops' by Dolce Lodovico, taken from Dalle Gemme, Venice 1549.

- ' the stone called diaspore taken and placed onto where the blood flows, restrains it.' A vulgarisation of a Medicine text entitled Tesoro dei Poveri, Biblioteca Laurentiana of Florence (Crusca Academy).

Analyzing the metaphorical and allegorical tradition, a remarkable source of useful elements for a scientific and analogical evaluation, I found it interesting to collect historical evidences coming from different traditions. First of all two quotations on primroses in general must be cited:

'The key to my sky is in your pure angel heart', a message in the symbolic language of flowers.

And:

'Pale primroses dying unmarried', taken from The Winter's Tale by Shakespeare.

Not only has the second quotation an artistic meaning, but it also contains a reference to the natural cycle of primroses: the plant blossoms when there are still few insects and its flowers are not often pollinated. The name itself reflects their quite precocious birth, which in the flower language inspired the symbol of Youth.

A further interesting element is represented by the nutritional traditions still present in the United Kingdom and in some territories of the former USSR; primroses are eaten with salad for their lovely taste, without any medical purpose.

Another important source of information consists in the magic and mythological traditions. That information must be examined in the light of the current knowledge and diffusion of myths and above all, the mystic and allegoric rituals. In this connection we can analyze the following factors:

- In tales, primroses blossom, brighten grasses, emanate perfumes and attractions. They even possess a great power. If appropriately used, they can make visible what is invisible.

- He who touches a fairies' rock with a bunch of primroses, the number of which is a secret, will see the way to their reign; grace and gifts opening before him. He who uses a bunch with the wrong number of flowers, will see opening the way to his misfortune.

It could be supposed that primroses (amongst which Lysimachia for its golden color) were used in rituals or holy ceremonies. They are likely to have been assumed alone or with other substances to 'stimulate' or 'enhance' sensorial perceptions 'making visible what was invisible' or 'opening the way to fairies reign'. It could be likewise supposed that such an effect was connected with the amount of substance taken: 'appropriately used' or rather 'he who uses a bunch with the wrong number of flowers, will see opening the way to his misfortune'. It is undeniable that saponins contain aglycones producing a neurotropic effect and other substances with a psychotropic effect still unstudied. On the grounds of another important observation, primroses could have been used in rituals as a substitute substance. The original ritual made use of a different substance with specific psychotropic effects, however the migrations of peoples led to the use of other substances reminiscent of the original substance, even only for their morphologic similarity. Agaricus muscarius alias Soma and the way its use has been handed down in the various migration areas of Aryan tribes, is an example of such a phenomenon.

I would like to end with a further quotation about primroses:

The legend narrates that when St. Peter knew that also the Lord owned heaven's keys, he threw away his own bunch. The keys fell down on a north European region, and there appeared the first Primula veris. According to a popular belief, that yellow flower, with its hanging heads, was similar to St. Peter's keys, and nowadays in Somerset, England, the flower is also called Bunch of Keys.

Cyclamen

I wanted to add something about the cyclamens, as their action on the body is similar to that of Lysimachia. I believe this similarity cannot be extended to the psychic field, unless further studies are carried out. Indeed the mental effects of Lysimachia and Cyclamen have not been proven to be equivalent. In my opinion, from the point of view of homeopathy, Lysimachia is a typical example of an element belonging to a transversal family. The analogies between these Primulaceae are also limited by tradition, as cyclamens are classified in a different manner from the other elements of the same botanical family due to their high toxicity.

Pliny the Elder suggested growing cyclamens in gardens and vegetable gardens around houses because, according to a popular belief 'where cyclamens are grown, malefic filters are ineffective. That is why they are called an amulet.' He also told pregnant women not to step on their roots, or they would miscarry.

The belief about their role as an amulet originated the conviction that they were a powerful antidote against snake poison.

Cyclamens are divided into fifteen species of tuberose herbaceous plants, which grow wild in the Mediterranean basin. Their leaves are decorative, rounded, ovate-cordate or reniform, petioled, and rise straight from the tubers. Long pedicels originating from the tubers too support their flowers. They are turned downward and show a tubiform corolla ending with five lanceolate lobes. Their smell is delicate and their mauve-pink color is indeed called cyclamen.

According to Theophrastus, cyclamens were used to excite the senses and to favor conception. That was likely to be due to their shape, which is similar to that of a uterus, or to the fact that the pedicel, after blossoming, twines and pushes the capsule towards the ground.

Besides, the term cyclamen derives from the Greek kiklos, circle, with reference to circular twining.

Cyclamens are also called 'sowbread' as pigs eat their tuberose roots, being immune to their poison, which symbolized negative feelings such as Distrust and Discouragement. The only slightly positive message they bring to the loved one is not really gratifying: Amiability without expectations.

Their essence, recommended to those born in the third Sagittarius decade, is reported to help people who are attracted to each other to get together.

Hypotension homoeopathic treatment (E. Wright Hubbard)

[Read before the Bureau of Materia Medica, I.H.A., June 21, 1951.].

Hypotension

Why is it that the world is to the chilly? If one person in a room minds the draft the other ninety-nine must swelter. Similarly what a dither there is about H and how few really pay attention to the low blood pressure cases.

What are the symptoms of low blood pressure? Exhaustion, easy fatiguability, fainting, dizziness, feeling of being weak in the knees, numbness, pallor, chilliness, inability to concentrate.

What does usual medicine offer for this oft-neglected complaint? Vitamins, tonics, liver in various forms, salt, coffee and stimulants, food, especially meat. Even strychnine, or adrenal extract.

Differential diagnosis including laboratory work is essential. Has the patient Addisons disease, is he anaemic, has the heart trouble, is he diabetic, has she directed herself into a decline, is the pre-tubercular, has she thyroid or liver disturbance? is some psychic or human relations factor at the bottom of it? Has she been depleted by long loss of vital fluids?.

Common sense and wholesome regimen will solve a certain per cent of such difficulties. Rest, hydrotherapy, diet, exercise, you all use.

The most powerful stimulation to the human body, however, is that exact but puissant imponderable the similimum. Take the hypotensives "chronic case" and give him the indicated constitutional remedy. Unfortunately many of these patients show few distinctive symptoms, but mainly common ones. However, the persistent use of the two most valuable words in homoeopathy "what else?" will elicit some salient trifles.

A few grand remedies will deal with many of these cases: Lycopodium when the patient is irritable; of a uric acid diathesis; with a liverish hue or discolored brownish patches on the skin; with craving for sweets; rumbling flatulence; four to six p.m. or a. m aggravation; relief from motion; a mental giant who is slipping into innocuous desuetude. Natrum muriaticum: if she eats salt out of the salt-cellar; faints in the hot sun; keeps everything in; weeps in secret; has headaches at 10 a.m. China; where there are dizziness; fainting; skipping heart; everything eaten turns to gas which will not go up or down; finicky appetite; noises in the ears; history of loss of vital fluids. Sepia; when there is a yellowish tint with dark circles under the eyes; general dragged down feeling; pulsation throughout the body; desire for sours; relief from violent exercise to their own surprise; empty, all-gone feeling in the epigastrium before lunch; liver spots; indifference to life and loved ones.

Of the nosodes. Tuberculinum and Psorinum are the most helpful. Calcarea phos. in exhausted, fast-growing young people, or Kali phos. in neurotic older women. Picric acid, or indeed many of the acids when indicated. Stannum, if there be catarrh and neuralgias with midday aggravation. Even our frequent friend Gelsemium or its rival Cocculus, or Causticum, despite being an ammonium, may serve.

Study the blood chemistry of your low tension patients. Often their chlorides will be out, their cholesterols low, their nitrogen metabolism may be disturbed, country to what one might have supposed.

At all events, in a field where little is known or done, the homoeopathic remedy can vitalize the patient to a remarkable degree and fit him to lose, more or less joyously, another button in lifes wringer!

NEW YORK, NEW YORK.

Discussion

DR. A.H. GRIMMER [Chicago, III.]: This is a most excellent paper. Dr. Hubbard has a way of making homoeopathy so easy. You can see the remedy right there, and that is why we should picture our remedies as living entities of sick people. There is one to add to the magnificent list she gave, one she did not mention, Carbo veg. That not only has lowered pressure and depleted vitality in the extreme, but it is one of the great remedies for its antidotal power over the coal tar drugs.

I may be a crank on that, but I have seen so many people who were sick, whose reactive forces were almost destroyed by excessive use of coal tar drugs, not necessarily given by old school doctors, but taken by the patients themselves. They can go to any drugstore or any place, almost, that you might mention, and get a supply of some one of these numerous things that we hear about over the radio twenty-four hours a day-about their virtues and what they will do for a little pain or a little headache, and then, if you dont get relief, they pass the back and tell you to go and see the doctor.

The question is: What is it doing to the race?.

Carbo veg. will help you out lots of times if you can find out-and always find out-what they have taken and how much they have taken of it. You will be surprised what it will do for you.

DR. ARTHUR WELLER [Orange, N.J.]: We have heard something about a disease that doesnt exist, in my opinion. Hypotension is not a disease; it is only a symptom. For many years I have studied these cases and I have found that it is the worst thing you can do to tell the patient he has hypertension or he has hypotension, because there is no such disease.

Some years ago I was talking to our Medical Society, and some agreed and some did not, but I find that they are not carrying it out because patients come to my office whom I have never seen before, and they say, "I hypotension. My doctor in Brooklyn told me so".

"And what did he say you would have to do?".

"Build myself up. I am run down. I have to be stimulated".

Now, two years ago, if you men noticed, in the Lahey Clinic Bulletin, Rut-ledge made this statement: "The worst thing you can do is tell a patient he has hypotension, because there is no such thing as a disease entity".

I have found that to be true. Hypotension simply depends on something else, and to tell a patient you are treating him for hypotension and giving him stimulating drugs, is the worst possible thing you can do. Many of our good clinicians will say not to tell your patients they have hypertension or hypotension. They worry about it too much.

I think hypotension should be mentioned only to be forgotten. It is nothing, and it is a disease entity I depends entirely upon other conditions, and I think we should remember that.

DR. WILLIAM P. MOWRY [Detroit, Mich.]: I should like to ask Dr. Hubbard one question: In these cases have you found they had a low blood sugar?.

DR. F.K. BELLOKOSSY [Detroit, Mich.]: A proof that hypotension is not a disease is the fact that some of such cases are not exhausted or weak at all; they can be very energetic and work all day long, physically or mentally; therefore, those who are exhausted are exhausted not on account of the hypotension but on account of some other symptoms they may have.

DR. ELIZABETH WRIGHT HUBBARD [New York, N.Y.]: That last remark of Dr. Bellokossys interested me because I am supposed to have too much pep for the worlds good, and I carry 110 right along always.

DR. BELLOKOSSY: One hundred and ten is normal.

DR. HUBBARD: It seems to be creeping down, because I used to be told it was 100 plus your age.

DR. BELLOKOSSY: Well, 115/80, and most of my patients have 110/80, and I consider that completely normal, and if I treat a hypertension case, it goes down to 115/80, and the statement that the blood pressure should be as many millimeters above a hundred as your age, is completely wrong in every case, without exception. It is 115/80, in my observation, if it is normal.

DR. HARRY R. SACKETT [St. Petersburg. Fla.]: Where do you get it?.

DR. BELLOKOSSY: Every case I treat is 115/80.

DR. GRIMMER: Does that hold for age?.

DR. BELLOKOSSY: Unless you are not too young. Some homoeopath in Africa found that in the African woods they have 115/80, and he says, "When I cure a case, it always goes down to 115/80. ".

DR. WELLER: What instrument are you using, Doctor?.

DR. BELLOKOSSY: The same thing as you are.

DR. WELLER: Mercury?.

DR. BELLOKOSSY: It is.

DR. SACKETT: I should like to know how many of those here have it as low as 115. I take 100 per cent exception. You cant tell me 115 is normal in a man of seventy-five or eighty.

DR. BELLOKOSSY: I watch these cases year in and year out and, if you can keep a reasonable balance between your high and low, and keep your low as high as 80, you are in a reasonable position.

DR. SACKETT: But I was under strain last winter, and my pressure stool at 165/80.

DR. HUBBARD (closing): While these gentlemen park their guns, I want to answer Dr. Mowrys question because he has asked a very pertinent as well as a polite question. He asked what about their blood sugars. I purposely did not mention it because I have been somewhat surprised that their blood sugars are not by any means or even preponderantly low, when their blood pressure is. I have had some very low blood sugars in connection with dieting, where they have attained almost pre-insulin shockage, and I have taken the blood pressure and they were not down, and blood sugars were 67, or something like that, and low blood pressure people with systolic pressure from 60 to 85, and their blood sugars were not low; so that is all I know.

Conium maculatum to nux moschata - a clear progression (G. Kokelenberg)

I have rarely prescribed Conium maculatum as a constitutional remedy. I usually find it needed to address an important transition state between other remedies as illustrated in the following case.

Grief, menopause

Dd con., nux-m.

Case

V.G. , a 49 year old woman, presents with the following complaints:

1. Lack of concentration, forgetful - forgets what she just read, cannot remember what was explained to her, does not recognize well known streets.

2. Flushes of heat with profuse perspiration. While this is worse since menopause, she also had it when she was taking oral contraceptives which she was forced to discontinue due to pain in the mammae. She has dryness in her mouth without thirst.

3. She wakes after 2-3 hours of sleep soaked from perspiration and cannot fall back to sleep. She feels exhausted and experiences orthostatic hypotension.

4. Over the past year her weight has increased from 55 to 65 kilograms. She has swollen breasts which are tender to touch and from jarring.

Personal History:

V.G. divorced in 1987 after her husband had an extramarital affair. He wanted to have a triangle relationship. When she refused, he left. Lots of grief but no tears; her life was meaningless afterwards for a while. She blamed herself for the breakup, she refused to go out from fear that people would criticize her. She felt stigmatized.

In 1990 she began a new relationship with a man. He turned out to be an alcoholic, lost his job because of the drinking and gradually became more aggressive towards V.G. He suffered from premature ejaculation and most recently had two myocardial infarctions.

Analysis and repertorisation:

Mind: Ailments from; grief

Female Genitalia: Menopause

Sleep; Waking; perspiration, from

Generalities: Heat; flushes of; perspiration; with Chest: Swelling; Mammae

Mind: Ailments from; love; disappointed, unhappy

Although Belladonna, Lachesis and Sulphur were represented in the corresponding rubrics, several of these symptoms were keynotes for Conium maculatum. Waking from perspiration in a menopausal woman, sore and swollen breasts during menopause - a time when breast tenderness usually diminishes, along with sexual abstinence or inability to have intercourse because of her lovers impotence or premature ejaculation, are all very important indications for Conium maculatum.

Prescription:

August 20, 1996 - Conium maculatum 200C. One dose.

Follow-up September 19, 1996

V.G. feels much better, can sleep the whole night now. There are no more hot flashes or sweats. No vertigo on rising.

Breasts feel normal now. Forgetfulness is not better. Dryness of mucosa is not better. Weight 63 Kg.

Plan: No remedy, wait.

Follow-up November 19, 1996

The mental symptoms are worse. V.G. describes the feelings of sleepiness and absentminded as if under tranquilizers. She cannot concentrate for one minute, doesn't remember where she parked her car nor can she recognize the streets of her (small) town. She is able to perform her normal work, but panics when something new is asked of her. V.G. still has a dry mouth and tongue and while she must drink to moisten them, she is not really thirsty. Her eyes and vagina are also dry.

She now weighs 61 kg., but she only seems to lose weight in her breasts, which feel flabby.

Analysis and repertorisation:

V.G. 's mental symptoms predominated at this point. I repertorized the mental characteristics as well as the etiologic symptoms.

MIND; AILMENTS from; grief

MIND; AILMENTS from; love; disappointed

MIND; MEMORY; weakness, loss of; heard, for what has

MIND; MEMORY; weakness, loss of; read, for what he has

MIND; CONCENTRATION; difficult

NOSE; DRYNESS; inside

MIND; UNCONSCIOUSNESS, coma, stupor; conduct, automatic

MOUTH; DRYNESS; thirstlessness, with MIND; RECOGNIZE; does not; streets, well known

SLEEP; SLEEPINESS; sleeplessness, during

CHEST; FLABBY mammae

FEMALE; MENOPAUSE

In this analysis, Nux moschata alone covers all of V.G. 's symptoms. On November 19th, 1996, I prescribed Nux moschata 200C. One month later, V.G. returns much improved: Sleepiness is now gone, feels awake and alert. The dryness of the mouth and eyes is better. Her vaginal dryness, however persists. She is sleeping well, the hot flashes did not return.

Conclusion:

Clearly V.G. 's mental condition worsened after taking Conium maculatum and only improved after taking Nux moschata. The fact that these mental symptoms were also present in the initial case lead one to question whether the Conium maculatum prescription was suppressive. The following observations lead me to believe that it removed an important layer of V.G. 's case.

Three of the symptoms used in the initial analysis, "waking from perspiration, flushes of heat with perspiration and breast swelling," were covered by Conium maculatum and not Nux moschata. The fact that these symptoms were removed by the Conium and did not return after Nux moschata, indicates different remedy layers.

The hierarchical value of mental symptoms covered by Nux moschata versus the physical general symptoms covered by Conium maculatum , would ordinarily lead to a preference for Nux moschata. However, the presence of Conium keynotes, especially during menopause can be a sign of a precancerous state which necessitates Conium 's prescription over other remedies.
PALSULE S. G., Asthma and Blood Pressure (pss1)

Low blood pressure

Low blood pressure is also known as hypotension. In an adult, is indicated by a systolic blood pressure persistently below 90-100 m.m. The pulse wave comes up rapidly and declines rapidly. It is ascertained by a peculiar method that is when the patient is in the erect position. The pulse rate is rapid and the rate falls 30 or 40 beats. When the patient lies down, symptoms may be absent but when present the symptoms are: -headache giddiness and sometimes syncope (transient loss of consciousness due to anemia of brain) may be complained of by the patient especially when rising from a recumbent posture. Depression, lassitude and undue fatigue are usual symptoms. In cases of “postural low blood pressure” the systolic blood pressure is 20-30 m.m. less when the patient is standing than when lying down.

Causative factors of low blood pressure

In health it is rare to get persistent low blood pressure due to hereditary condition. It is found after meals, a warm bath or moist heat. In a disease, the chief causes of low blood pressure are: - heart disease, weakness of the left ventricle such as occurs in coronary thrombosis and toxic myocarditis with diphtheria. Suprarenal atrophy or tuberculosis (Addison’s disease), cachexia and deficient food. Shock, collapse, bleeding or dehydration. Mental and physical overexertion. Sometimes with advanced renal (kidney) disease and with arteriosclerosis.

General suggestions while treating the cases of low blood pressure

Special attention should be given to the muscle of the heart known as myocardium. The diet should be nutritive digestible and rich in vitamins. Avoid frequent taking of purgatives. Hot baths should be avoided. Mental and physical activities should be restricted. Graduated exercise and use of abdominal belt is advisable. Cod Liver Oil is useful. In severe cases rest in bed is essential.

Homeopathic treatment

Viscum album

Should be used in rheumatic and gouty constitution in cases of low blood pressure. Patient may be suffering from sciatica, epilepsy or chorea. There is vulvular insufficiency. Pulse small and weak. Patient is unable to sit in reclining position. There is palpitation while taking sexual intercourse. The patient is worse during winter, cold and stormy weather.

Secale cornutum

Is useful especially in old people and women having the history continuous bleeding (hemorrhage). There is great difficulty, exhaustion, and emaciation though the appetite and thirst is good or excessive. The fingers and feet are bluish, shivered with icy-coldness. Still the patient is better by cold.

Camphora officinalis

Is very useful in cases of collapse when the temperature is subnormal, low blood pressure, useful in cholera when there are cramps in calves and coldness of the body with great weakness Tongue and mouth cold.

Phosphorus

Is prescribed in run down cases. Patients of tuberculous diathesis with narrow chest and thin in physique. There is great nervous debility with symptoms of neurasthenia, sexual debility etc. There is vertigo with faintness. Vertigo of old people, vertigo after rising.

Other medicines

Coffea, Canabis Indica, Veratrum Album, Veratrum Viride, Digitalis, Adonis.
POIRIER J., Homeopathic Treatment of the Diseases of Heart (prj1)

Habitual treatment of tachycardia

In simple tachycardias the treatment is aimed at the primitive affection : Basedow's disease, tuberculosis. With it is added the different sedative means against the palpitation : Adrenalin in hypotension, Digitalin in small doses if there is a subjacent lesion, Geneserine to inhibit the sympathetic system.

The weakness and cardiac insufficiency : crataegus, digitalis, strophantus

Crataegus oxyacantha

Tachycardia "by the least exercise". The heart becomes irregular and the patient is oppressed. The pulse is rapid and irregular. It is the fatigued heart by the least effort.

Sometimes the patient feels cramping pains in the praecordial region. The dominating symptom is the cardiac asthma. Crataegus is indicated in all acute affections with the danger of heart failure, in all the convalescences of acute diseases where the heart has become weak. But it is specially an admirable remedy of all tuberculinic conditions with hypotension and unstability of the heart, in which, associated with Pulsatilla and helped by the ground remedies and isotherapic remedies, it does wonder by heightening the tension and giving to the cardiac muscles the normal tonus.
ROWE T., Urolophus Halleri a proving of Round Stingray (rwt3)

Venom

Stingray venom is a protein (molecular weight greater than 100,000) which is water soluble. Low concentrations cause EKG changes of increased PR intervals associated with bradycardia. First degree AV block may occur with mild hypotension. Larger doses produce vasoconstriction, second and third degree AV block and signs of cardiac ischemia. Most cardiac changes are reversible within 24 hours. Some degree of respiratory depression is also noted and convulsions may also occur.

Effects of venom

A. Localized effects: The pain is immediate and severe, increasing over 1-2 hours and easing after 6-10 hours. Secondary infection may occur. Pain is constant, pulsating or lancinating. Bleeding may be profuse. The area is quite swollen and pale with a bluish rim, centimeters in width, spreading around the wound after an hour. Local necrosis, ulceration and secondary infection are common. Osteomyelitis can occur and amputation has been known to be necessary.

B. Generalized Effects: The venom is associated with anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, frequent urination and salivation. There may be extension of pain to the area of lymphatic drainage. Muscular cramps, tremors, paralysis of the affected limb, fainting, palpitations, hypotension, heart rate irregularities, difficulty breathing, cough, pain on inspiration; fever at night with copious sweating, nervousness, confusion or delirium are also known to occur. Symptoms may persist for weeks to months after an injury including a dull ache and swelling which is better on elevation. Fatalities occur either immediately or within two weeks if the spine perforates important body cavities.

Low blood pressure (hypotension)

In hypotension the systolic pressure is consistently low around 100 mm Hg. or less and diastolic pressure around 60 mm Hg. or less. Common causes for low blood pressure are genetic, individual traits, after effects of severe forms of illness like malaria, typhoid and excessive loss of vital fluids as can be seen in cholera, diarrhoea, menorrhagia, bleeding injuries etc. Another group consists of people above the middle age suffering from postural hypotension causing dizziness, irregular heart beats, etc. Low blood pressure can occur because of improper use of crude drugs. Grave situation exists when blood pressure is difficult to be recorded and pulse remains weak. Urine output diminishes. This is a near collapse condition.

Common symptoms associated with hypotension are constriction and oppression with stitching pain as of an iron band, imperfect oxygenation leading to cyanosis, breathlessness on movement, palpitation, weak digestion with acidity, dropsy and irregular heart beat.

Nourishing and easily digestible food, rest, cleanliness and cheerful surroundings are as essential as indicated remedies to establish a cure. (Arsenic Album, Arnica, Cactus, Carbo Veg., China, Crataegus Ox., Iris. v.).

CONSTITUENTS Steroid saponins, e.g. diosgenin, characterize Liliales to a remarkable degree. The steroid portion of diosgenin is used in the preparation of hormones, i.e. progesterone and birth control pills. Diosgenin has various biological activities, such as anti-fatigue, anti-inflammatory, antistress, and oestrogenic; in addition it lowers cholesterol levels in blood and decreases mastopathy. This phytohormonal substance is present in such Liliales as Dioscorea, Trillium, Paris, Agave, Aletris, Asparagus and Smilax. Some Liliales contain poisonous compounds, mainly cardiac glycosides, i.e. Veratrum, Sabadilla, Lilium, Galanthus, Convallaria, Colchicum, Squilla, and Ornithogalum. [Cardiac glycosides, however, are not exclusive for Liliales; they occur in many plants, most notably in Digitalis, Selenicereus grandiflorus - Cactus grandiflorus -, Apocynum, Nerium oleander, Strophanthus, Helleborus, and Adonis vernalis. The venom of the toad, Bufo, also contains cardiac glycosides.] Veratrum album, Veratrum viride, Sabadilla, Allium sativum, and other members of the Liliales contain potent hypotensive agents. In terms of affinities Liliales therefore seem to affect chiefly hormonal processes and the cardiovascular system.

Chapter 10 Excessive hypersensitivity and over irritability

Chamomilla Case

George: So Kali-ar. is again a very close remedy. It is cold - usually cold. Kali-ar. is a person who is quite composed in spite of the fears. They are quite closed up. I would not expect this kind of irritability to be expressed. She says, "I am too nervous and I have high blood pressure." I would expect Kali-ar. to have low blood pressure. Indeed I have found it in hypotensive individuals. These people are somewhat conservative. They are like Calc. people in that they are "proper". They are the kind that you will find in the CIA. (Laughter)

Question: Why would they be low blood pressure people if they are so proper?

George: I don't know, but this is what I found. I cannot explain it. You will see coldness in general and extreme coldness in the extremities. They have a kind of introverted attitude which we associate with low blood pressure. The extroverts are much more easily having brain strokes by high blood pressure.

Chapter 22

Acetanilidum

Depresses heart. Depresses respirations and blood pressure. Lowers temperature. Cyanosis and collapse. Increased susceptibility to cold. Destroys red blood corpuscles. Enlarged sensation. Fainting. Moral depravity. Pallor of optic discs. Contracted visual fields and shrinking of retinal vessels. Mydriasis. Oedema of feet and ankles. Heart weak, irregular with blue mucous membranes. It is a remedy worth remembering and what will you remember? You MUST remember these remedies. You see: depressed heart, respiration, blood pressure, and lower temperature, and you are having a condition which is nearing death. You see the coldness - the lowering of temperature, blood pressure, respirations - everything has been reduced.

Question: Is that a Carbo-v. state?

George: It is a kind of state like that except that it is more severe - more deep. This is a state which I believe will be similar to what we were talking about with Sep. Sep. tends to be hypotensive, and tends to have a low pulse. A Sep. patient will come and sit before the doctor and will sit like that on the table. She may not be doing it if it is the first time she is coming to you. She is low, dragging down, and this is the same idea in Acetan. You can remember the depression of the blood pressure, respirations, heart rate, and temperature. It is not a normal temperature. So you may remember it in severe cases where they are approaching death. I have used it once or twice and it worked.

Question: How do you differentiate between this and Carb-v.?

George: You will give Carb-v. and it does not work.

Tuberculinum bovinum kent

General indications for tuberculinum

Superficial disturbances of the circulation are seen; there is a bluish pallor of the skin, a purple condition of the extremities and chilblains are usual. Circulatory derangements are characteristic. Hypotension is usual, though arterial tension is often raised temporarily by taking coffee. Palpitation often occurs on waking, but the cardiac symptoms in general are usually relieved by the taking of gentle exercise.

Leaving aside any questions of why you would worry about elevated iron levels based on the advice of a newsletter (the quote you gave jumps from cholesterol, to organ damage to cancer and coronary event with no indication of what is an 'elevated' level), have you had your blood iron levels tested? Were you high? By how much and for how long? There is a condition where individuals have dangerously high hematocrit (red blood cell volume) levels and must donate blood on a regular schedule. It is a relatively rare condition but very easily identified by blood tests.

Thanks Shannon.
Yes, adrenal exhaustion has been diagnosed for me at least since 1982
I have quite a good diet, based on fresh organic foods (w/very little
meat) for the last 30 yrs.
I recently gave up all purine foods AND salt as they agg my sx.
There is not much left for me to eat!
(I have been eating sprouts for protein.)

I wonder if I took B12 and foliate if it would help my body digest
purine.
It is almost as if I have gout but w/o the swelling.
Possibly my using the cell salts keeps the swelling & most of the
pain down but not the stiffness.
I wonder how the salts affect blood tests.
My RBC are slightly low, MCH slightly high, urea nitrogen is at the
top level, sed rate high (58), immunoglobulin E very high (163). I
wanted the doc to do an iron test but he would not.
Thanks again for your input.
Best regards,
Lynn, NYC

PS. Giving blood in order to reduce blood iron level shows the blood-
letting of the past in a different light.
