The incidence of deaths (and severe illness) in cats and dogs from acute
kidney disease is way higher than advertised, from nearly all the canned
food manufacturers (over 90 of them) who sell canned cat and dog food.

The toxin is confirmed to be aminopterin, a rat poison that is illegal
in the U.S., in the tainted food. (It is not known if this is the only
toxin - but this one has been confirmed today in Menu Foods from both
the Kansas and New Jersey plants of Menu Foods.) Menu Foods is the
supplier of a toxic ingredient used by all the more than 90 *Canned*
food manufacturers, as part of the "gravy".

Menu Foods suspects wheat gluten from China to contain the poison but
the quantity of rat poison is said to be too high for it to be just a
bit of accidental poison. It is found at 40ppm in the food!

Aminopterin is also used as a cancer drug! In USA!
Mechanism: It is a dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) inhibitor. DHFR
catalyzes the reduction of dihydrofolate (DHF) to tetrahydrofolate
(THF), an essential cofactor in the biosynthesis of thymidylate
monophosphate (dTMP). Inhibition of DHFR leads to a deficiency of dTMP
since DHF cannot be recycled, and thus causes inhibition of cell growth.

Since the above means that the drug will seriously deplete folate
supplies, will it help the poisoned animals to offer a high dose of
folic acid?

Unfortunately aminopterin is a patent drug still (though soon to be of
patent) and the USP is still seeing a drug monograph for it. So there is
no formal documentation as yet of its "side effects" - pity, it might be
helpful!

Aminopterin was also used as an abortifacient till 1952 but caused
severe defects in those that survived (unusual facies, skull anomalies,
and skeletal defects). So if pregnant animals have taken the toxic food
- we will be seeing more serious effects in the months to come:-(

Methotrexate is a very closely related drug with the same anti-cancer
mechanism. Per research "It is known to cause damage to the small
intestine, leading to its dysfunction.

This to me suggests we support the intestinal function of sick animals.
N-acetylcysteine should help protect the mucous membranes of the
intestines. To food I'd also add: Folate, bifidus bacteria,
Para-amino-benzoic-acid (a precursor of Folic acid made by intestinal
bacteria), rice bran, and cooked pumpkin - plus slippery elm syrup.
* Slippery elm syrup: Sprinkle 1 teasp slippery elm bark powder onto
half a cup of water. Heat with stirring till nearly boiling, and keep
the thickened syrup in the fridge. Dose 1 or 2 ml for cats, more for
dogs that are bigger than cats - about 20 minutes
before any main meal. It coats and soothes the intestines and has a few
good nutrients. It works well in cats and dogs. (Not all herbs do.)
[When looking for the herb powder (or capsules to use emptied out) look
for the grey/green colour powder, as it gels well - the red/orange does
not form syrup properly.]

We could also use these drug damage clues in repertorizing.
The initial symptoms are total refusal to eat, and acute kidney failure
with extremely high creatinine levels.
Not much to go on - but it's what I have currently.

I thought I'd share it in case it is helpful somewhere.

Folinic acid (leucovorin) doses are suggested at 1 mg/kg/day, orally on
a source on another list, sorry no name was specified for the
recommendation, but it's something to follow up.

The mechanism of kidney damage involves crystal formation.
