neck or throat?

Hi List,

I always understood that the neck is the back of the part of body
between head and shoulders/chest and (external) throat is the front.

But now I read in an Indian Medical Dictionary that neck is the
total of this part.

This question came up on the German list and it is really quite
relevant sometimes for rertorizing and interpreting the MMs.

Which is correct?

The neck is the entire area between the head and the shoulders.
The throat is the anterior part of the neck

Same as the "neck" of a bottle - it is the narrow part at the top of the
bottle below the cap - all of it. And for example a "neck" band goes all
the way round the "neck" in a band as a preacher may wear - or a dog's
collar goes round the neck - all round it.
"Neck" is just a narrow area joining two wider areas.
It's same as external neck - like on the skin of the neck area (anywhere
between head and shoulders) as opposed to the glands inside. It covers a
melanoma on the skin of the neck or rash there etc - where you will look
for internal issues like glandular involvement internally.
