Good Use of Research

Same with the food manufacturers.
But it's not so easy as all that.
They FINANCE the studies - they do not do them. The studies are done at
university research departments in most cases, by scientists who value
their reputation.
The drug/food company will often have one representative on the
scientific team - but they are by no stretch involved in it apart from
providing a drug to test or a food to use etc.
One can (and must) see through the biased aspects and look at what
the research REALLY discovers.

This is why I feel so strongly that homeopaths NEED to know how to
interpret research papers.
An example (I'll use a food/kidney-health one to hopefully defuse
emotions from the principles involved):
In 1991, Hills Science diet food manufacturer did research to try to
show that feeding poor quality low protein from cheap soy, was a good
idea for those with kidney damage. To this day most kidney specialists,
endocrinologists and doctors recommend this for damaged kidneys!!!

However if one READS the 1991 research, which was done in cats, it
compares two foods, both of them 40% (or 44%?) fat, and the rest was a
mix of hi-carbohydrate cereal and soy protein. one food had higher
protein than the other, and the cats with intentionally damaged kidneys
did better on the lower protein food. Cats in both groups failed to eat
their quota of food (no wonder as there was sickening fat and no meat in
it! and some got ill on the fat included which was all saturated.
Since no human or cat eats a 40% saturated fat diet and lives very
long on it, the entire research was invalid. It also was invalid for
using soy protein for an obligate carnivore.
One researcher working for Hills Science diet back then was so
disgusted at having his good name involved (Dr Delmar Finco) he later
repeated the research on protein levels, using a proper food, ranging
from 18% protein up to 56% protein. (56% is what cats get in the wild) -
and used animal protein, not soy plant protein.
He also separated foods on calories to ensure his results were not
due to calorie differences rather than protein ones. The results of
course showed that damaged kidneys need a LOT of protein to be
repairable and the 56% protein diet won hands down.
Calorie-wise, the low calorie diet did better.
So the studies were reported as "controversial" because according to
food manufacturers (not scientists) one showed low protein a good idea
(cheap soy protein) and the other showed expensive meat protein a good
idea. Vets and doctors all learned the 1991 stuff in med/vet school, and
seldom change their minds after that regardless of evidence.

We homeopaths can do better!

So how to explain the Hills results?
Not hard: The soy plant protein is inappropriate for animal tissue
repair as it has amino acids in plant ratios not animal ratios - so the
leftovers of metabolic attempts to handle such off balance amino acids -
actually increase the kidney damage. So the more soy was eaten, the
more kidney damage occurred. That is why6 the lower protein in the Hills
study did LESS damage than eating more of the damaging soy protein.
The WRONG conclusion had been drawn - that "high proten damaged kidneys"
instead of that "high soy with high fat" damaged kidneys.

The research FACTS were still correct - even in the bad research.
Soy will do damage - and high saturated fat will also.

That is my point - that we need to look at the research facts - at what
the research REALLY shows - not at what some drug/food manufacturer
concludes from it.
And of course - if your own or your clients' kidneys are damaged - do
not put them on a low protein diet or a soy protein diet! Use a low
calorie high protein meat-/fish/egg based anti-oxidant,
anti-inflammatory diet.

This sort of ability to read a research paper and SEE the difference
between what was discovered and what was CLAIMED to be discovered - is
crucial in homeopathy: As Hahnemann explained, the environmental factors
and maintaining causes including diet, ARE our responsibility to check out.
The research *facts* are there - we need to use them.

So - even very biased research turns up good science if you read it
properly. The drug company person on a research team is by no means the
majority of the scientists - and the detailed scientific paper IS
available (and necessary) to read - not just the potentially faulty
conclusion, which is indeed a lazy (and dangerous) option:-)

This means we have to independently look at the research to see what
was discovered that may be of use.
It does NOT mean we should get on a high horse and throw the baby out
with the bathwater to mix metaphors.
:-)

Namaste,
IRene

Dear Irene,

I totally agree with you, except that I doubt that there is so much
unbiased research published. if you look at the link, its quite normal
that the industry has its fingers in the study and esp. the statistics
before publication.

Sorry, but they are beholden to those who pay them.

Honesty means losing your job in many cases - ie Duesberg and others.

You will not have a job long if you don't find what they want you to find

all one needs to do is pay attention the numerous legal cases against
various drug
companies for the damages incurred from their products. in each and every
one
of these cases bogus research, distorted and stilted reporting of data and
hidden
data always appear to be central to the medical damage created. heart
medications,
anti-depressants that cause suicide, and vaccines are only 3 of the
categories of
drugs that are put onto the market with insufficient and deceitful
'research.'
whistleblowers lose their jobs, their access to further research money and
their
reputations for speaking the truth.

such truthspeak may rattle the dearly held belief systems of some people.
however,
if these few cases hit the public press, one can only imagine all those
that have
not been picked up on by the mass media. when you look at the epidemic of
autism (1:166 children) it is unconscionable to me that the public is not
screeching
against the forced use of such a toxic protocol--a protocol that has never
been
proven effective!

about 2 yrs ago a friend of mine was given a medication for some suspected
kidney or sciatica problem (they never did dx her condition). i looked up
the
drug which had a red flag for damage to the heart as a number 1 side effect.
since she was still on disability, there was a need to play the allopathic
game.
so she called the dr and stated that she would not take this medication due
to
the side effects which she enumerated with a strong and clear voice. he
immediately altered his prescription to another with a slightly less
critical
list of side effects--which she also refused to take. the point being that
the medical profession is as uninvolved with researching the meds they
prescribe as is the drug company's lack of concern for what they push. the
drug companies are intentionally dishonest and the medical profession, by
putting themselves in the hands of the drug companies for their information,
becomes complicit. good research? it all depends on which side of the
dollar you sit. if it is different in other parts of the world, i would
certainly
be open to hear about it. but i seriously doubt that there is any
difference.
that is why the Codex Alimentarius was pushed through the EU, is
adopted by Canada which has been limiting the sale of homeopathic
rx, and was slipped into the CAFTA treaty in august, 2005 without any
of congress even being aware that they passed this obnoxious legislation.
it id due to go into practice in the usa by 2009 but the path is being set
in typical fashion with the passing of little bills that chip away at our
freedom
of health choice.

Hi Irene,

About that cats-and-soy "study"--wow...
Apparently a similar "study" is responsible for the still-popular idea
that eating too many eggs will raise your cholesterol levels. I read
that that study, done some 50(?) years ago by the Kellogg corporation
(you know, the breakfast cereal company?), and used *not* real eggs,
but freeze-dried powdered eggs, which were *already* known to disturb
the blood/body because of the damage caused to the fats in the
freeze-drying processes. The studies were later done using *real* eggs
(the sort that regular people would be using at home), and found that
eggs actually *benefit* the cholesterol levels, because of their
very-generous supply of lecithin and other nutrients.
years ago, yet in the "mainstream" (and in the understanding of most
doctors even today), eggs are still considered bad, because of that
(dishonest) study.
turn green when I remarked that my protein issues were much better
since a few months before I'd gone back to eating six (raw) eggs daily.
She: "Oh my, have you had your cholesterol levels checked?" Me:
"Nope, but you can do that if you want to." So we did, and a few days
later she announced that "everything that should be high is high;
everything that should be low is low--your blood lipid profile is
perfect, so I guess they're not hurting you!" :-)) )
Cheers,
Shannon

Depends just who *is* behind the study, and how "determined" their
agenda might be.
It certainly pays to know that when evaluating any study!

Sometimes it's not even bogus research, but people were directly "paid
off" to suppress or not consider the research. Sometimes the
*research* actually was fine, but was hidden. (E.g. as happened with
aspartame, Vioxx, and *numerous* others.)

In some of these cases what has finally brought (or may be bringing)
the bad news to light, was that somebody actually *read the research*,
and insisted on having it brought to light

Actually I'm familiar with a little of this...
Statins are horrible for reasons totally other than cholesterol, tho
(e.g. hugely deplete Co-Q1- levels, which is disastrous). The whole
"drug therapy" thing is awful--no one ever has suffered from a "drug
deficiency"...

I'll read some of this when I can--still, I thought it interesting that
*by her own measuring stick* (and she was looking at the overall lipid
profile, not only at cholesterol) the eggs had had either no effect and
I've got marvelous blood, or had had a good effect, counter to her
expectation...

Thanks for those links, I will read with interest.

and has anyone been paying attention to the bruhaha being drummed
up against raw milk/dairy products. there is an effort in congress to ban
its sale/use. however, milk is a highly tainted product due to its
processing.
the fat in milk is changed in the pasteurization process. it becomes
difficult
to digest and affects many with difficult-painful digestion. it also
becomes
a mucous forming product in the body. however, the powers that be
think they can control the public's thirst for health by creating another
scare mongering publicity venture. this not only attacks the idea about
raw milk, but also impunes the confidence in organic products. the
e-coli scare this past summer was also designed to scare the public
into submission for processed and drug laden foods. the reality of
the e-coli outbreak was from chemicalized cows upstream! now why
didnt that make the headlines as did the organic lettuce and spinach.
