Part of the concern is that some 'professionals' push these products and try to sign up their clients as 'downline' salespeople. This has happened in the past, and I have known of two naturopaths that required their clients to purchase their line of products as part of their practice. I use a product from MLM which I purchase for my family, but do not 'sell' to others. I have a disclosure sheet for my clients so they know the situation.

A second part of the concern is that some of these ML companies organize their own 'education', teaching some very questionable practices which revolve around their product line.

I am bothered by the bias against ML marketing. I share much of that
myself and have to ask myself why. Actually one of the best products that
I have ever used is a ML product and several people on this list promote it
as an adjunct to their homeopathic practice. I have had this product
reviewed
by a local hospital nutritionist who gave it a big thumbs up. But
nonetheless
people are reluctant to embrace it due to its distribution process. All I
can
come up with is some sort of bias against the seemingly unique form of
commercialism involved in the selling process. But as long as we operate
under
a capitalist economic system, there is really no difference in what ML's do
and
what pharmacies or health food stores do. They work to sell products
and make money by any means which work and are considered legal--or maybe
not!

In my practice I sell all kinds of products, I have a resale certificate for
our business and give my customers a discount. I do offer some MLM products
but only if I have taken them or another client has used them and has been
helped. I don't care about the money one way or the other. I think it is a
person's character that defines whether or not they sell these products to
their clients just to make a buck. I buy many products and give them away
all the time. Not all ND's are like the two you mention, at least I am not.
If you purchase good products for your family, then you should share that
with your clients. I would suggest anyone that goes to a Alternative
Healer and has to buy one brand to get a second opinion, unless they have a
proprietary blend that they have made for them. I make my own massage oils
and sell them because it is less expensive for my clients that way. So to
get to the point sometimes you have to do MLM's to get certain products.

Yes, Kathy, I quite agree. I am also an ND and do not operate as those two individuals I mentioned. My response was not an indictment of any practice, and only directed to Tanya's specific question about WHY there appears to be a bias against ML marketing.

okay, i can appreciate where you are coming from. but as noted, the big

this big time. i think a code of ethics in the profession might address

sorry for the abortive post. my computer has a mind of its own! so let me
complete my thought:

pharma industry does
the abusive practices. in
their choice (read financial
gain) in allopathic practices as well as holistic ones that it may seem
like an acceptable thing to do.

the problem that we have is really part of the way people just do business.
if we, as a profession,
want to promote a different pattern of behavior, we need to realize we are
swimming against the
