Hi all,
I took a small case where the person was finding that her throat was literally closing up on her. She described it as
'it felt as if someone was strangling me". I've searched through Kent for strangulation in some form or other and cannot find.
Any suggetions? Should I just go with choking? or asphyxiation? The symbolism of strangulation is so SRP and profound a theme for her....
any help is appreciated.

Here are a few possibilities (all under Throat):
Choking, constricting
Compression, sensation of
Convulsions, spasms
Stricture, esophagus
Suffocative sensation

And some more distant possibilities:
Induration
Obstructed sensation
Tension
Thick sensation

Interesting--is this in response to anything, or is it chronic?

Hello Carol,
I see this very frequently, but have never used homeopathy to resolve the issue. In about 90% of the cases I have seen, it was an allergic reaction and with a bit of investigation we were able to find the cause. A very high percentage had a reaction to dairy or to allopathic medications. Strangely they could eat dairy comfortably if they started the meal with something else. There were a small number of cases where the problem seemed to be stress related. In those cases the cause and other reactions to stress were the most valuable in finding the right homeopathic remedy for the individual.

Is this sensation of strangulation in response to specific triggers, or is it general? If the latter, take a look at the snake remedies.

Hi Carol:

I have had personal experience with this sensation and each time it was
a symptom associated with an allergy. The most serious incident was a
drug allergy (codeine) many years ago which put me in the ER and
several days as an inpatient.

More recently throat symptoms have been associated with food, pollen or
insect bite allergies. I have used Lycopodium very successfully and
Apis, but it depended on what I thought my symptoms were at the time
and under what circumstances the reaction displayed itself. Lycopodium
got me out of a severe shellfish reaction and Apis cured reactions from
things like pollen, dust, dust mites, mosquito bites, etc. These two
remedies act very quickly -- I took 30c dry dose as I didn't have time
to make up an MS.

I consider the throat closing up an emergency as it can develop into
life threatening situations.

Hi Carol-
Whenever someone tells something is like as if something else-
consult sensations as if by H A Roberts or Ward.
In this instance-
sensation as if- strangled - Strych
she were being - Zinc
Strangling - Hyos

See if there is anything that is strangling her in life - is she
entangled with something?All of this choking, strangling etc. highly
"connote" certain experiences for patients.

There was this case where a 60 + woman had asthma with sensation of
choking and also burning in stomach. Both started 2 years back and
since asthma around 60 was unusual for a first attack, she was
questioned more deeply. It turns out her only son ( she is very
possessive) got married and is now not listening to her. She was
crying a lot at that time and I asked if grief and sorrow choked her
- and she said "yes". There is a saying in our local language -when
children go against the parents - "the abdomen which bore the child
burns with anger"

I asked her if the burning is like that- which it was. Later she
responded so very well to Pulsatilla- (sensation as if she would be
choked - Puls)

So apart from working out on the symptom see if you can go down to the
next level-
for starters - she is being strangled by what - when did she feel
strangled before the same way- what does strangling mean to her- is
there someone that she would like to strangle- etc...

of course be subtle with this- we also should not put words into their
mouth - there is this little thing called "self fulfilling prophecy" (
which is over-active in homeopathic community- like everything looks
like a Delusion of something or other and - all seminar participating
provers bring out symptoms that are so like the source of the proven
remedy- )
