Dosing animals

Post by Kerry »

This is a question for anyone who treats animals:
I am at present dealing with an animal with extreme fear problems (to
the point of near terror) but also advanced pathology; I don’t want to
give high potencies for fear of aggravating the advanced pathology but
physically handling the animal, or even getting close to it to medicate,
causes such distress that I need to avoid it as much as possible. The
animal is out grazing for most of the day and I have no guarantee that
it will eat or drink once it does come into shelter at night, also
putting the medication on the food or in drinking water gives me no
control over the dose. How do others go on for medicating an animal in
this sort of situation? I have given a test dose in the hope that it
would be long lasting but without success and the animal needs repeat
dosing. The advanced pathology is mainly joint problems, especially in
the hips with limited mobility, and I obviously don’t want to risk
making this situation worse.
I would be grateful if people could share their method of dosing in such
a situation.

Seems to me your only option is dosing in water, because you can't get close
enough to spray a dose on the animal (a technique I've used on a cat with a
broken jaw). Have you considered treating the joint problems with tissue
salts? Low potency, easily dissolved in water, can bear repeat dosing, etc.

first, i need to ask why limit yourself about potency? high potency can
often
be gentle with low potencies agg--in each individual case! and what about
LM's?

have you tried to spray some rescue rx on the animals nose before trying
to dose? it often has very immediate calming effects.
for that matter you might try spraying the remedy on its nose or mouth.

is this a large animal that cant be held?

Thank you to all those who have replied so far.

The animal concerned is a goat that appears to be from wild stock, who I
assume was stolen from the wild, probably as a kid (but don't know for
certain as she was found tangled in brambles). I have heard on quite a
few occasions of the kids being taken from the wild. She had a collar
on so had obviously at some stage been handled by humans. On first
bringing her here and putting her into a shippon she was so demented
that she threw herself repeatedly at the walls in an attempt to escape.
I had hoped that overnight she might calm down but she remained just as
demented and terror stricken. I decided to let her out with the rest of
the herd and hope that she would come round more quickly with contact
with them. After that I could not even manage to get near to her for
several weeks but she started to follow the herd into the yard at nights
and started to use a shed that I was leaving open for her. Upon hearing
me she would immediately run panic stricken from the shed and off into
the field. Fortunately as the weather started to turn, she decided that
shelter was better than running and would stay in the shed, but at the
back, poised for flight and ready to hurl herself forward if I moved
towards her. Her reaction goes beyond fear to terror, the terror of a
wild animal when cornered. I am used to dealing with both domestic and
wild and this is certainly no normal domestic animal that is scared.
She is the colouring and type of a wild goat.

With regards to potency, I had been under the understanding that with
advanced pathology we should stay away from the high C's and use either
the low C's or the LM scale. I was actually going to use the LM scale.
With regards to the Rescue Remedy, no I hadn't tried that as even moving
my arm towards her causes her to become frantic. If I just ignore her
she will stay put while I hay and water her up but even looking in her
direction for more than a few seconds can start panic. She has her set
routine and is happy as long as that is kept to, which I have found to
be the case with other wild animals that I have dealt with.

With regards to the radionics, I have no knowledge whatsoever of this
system but will do some reading on the net.

Many thanks for your input.

Hi Tanya

It could be a possibility. The person who found her suspected that she
had come from someone who was known for letting animals die of neglect;
they weren't certain but they knew that these people had a goat at one
stage though they had never seen it and then they no longer had one. I
feel that most of the terror though comes from the wildness in her.

Can you borrow a dart gun? Put the remedy in the syringe. Or, use a spray
bottle that sprays a stream instead of a mist. That should give you several
feet of distance. Or put the remedy in a bucket of water (small amount) and
toss the water on the animal when is goes past you, as long as you hit a nose,
eye, or ear the remedy will be absorbed. Getting the remedy on the hair
coat is iffy as it will roll off, better a mucus membrane. Or cut the critter
away from the others and put the remedy on some grain or a treat in a feeder
(use a enough that the treat is awash in remedy) and wait for it to eat. I've
used all the above and the remedy will work this way.

Hi Carol

No I don't have access to a dart gun. With all goats dislike of water,
I wouldn't be keen on throwing water on her as I feel that this would
just make her even more scared and difficult to deal with. Hopefully
the spraying will work.

Thanks for your suggestions.
