A question about St. John's Wort

Hello Leslie -

it's because hypericin, the active substance in St. John's Wort,
supposedly causes photosensitivity. (The side effect being that the
skin absorbs more UV rays than usually.)

Some recent studies, however, suggest that its dangers may be grossly
exaggerated. (See e.g. Brockmoller et al., Hypericin and
pseudohypericin: pharmacokinetics and effects on photosensitivity in
humans, "Pharmacopsychiatry", 1997.)
