Obsessed about disease

Post by myirishenergy »

Hi All,
I have this young man on Phos who fits the total picture.
He is so obsessed with fear of disease it's become obsessive.
He'll rub a spot on his back till it hurts trying to see if there's
something wrong with a tiny pain in his spine.
He thinks he's going to have a heart attack if he over exerts himself
and his heart is pounding fast. Or that he has a tumor somewhere. It's
constant all thru the day the obsessed fears of disease.
I know Phos is big on that but he seems way off.
I've tried Ars on him as well as Carc intermittently and he still is
this way.
He also has constant Vertigo. It NEVER goes away.
Any ideas for me to help him. I'd appreciate it.
thanks, Emily

The rest of the case would have been useful, to pinpoint this fear of
disease and even more so the vertigo. But have a look at Borax and
Psorinum - just 2 rx that have constant vertigo and and deep fear of
disease. Joy

Hi Emily,
What do you have for his "context", or bigger picture? It might help
to examine things like--how long has he been this way, any apparent
causation, and what was he like as a teen, child, infant?

He was hyper as a child.
He's tall, slim, active, has that Phos sparkle in his eye, outgoing,
wants to play, brags about all his friends, rather play than work
but he's not lazy towards work. Very friendly, heart palpitation at
times, sleeps on his right side,
Easily distracted, heartburn at times, gas, craves chocolate ice
cream, chews on ice, loves beer, hypochondriac to the hilt and needs
consolation constantly and if he doesn't get it from someone he'll
call someone else - that's how compulsive he is.
He's 32 and plays on a Hockey team then goes home and plays video
games or constantly chats with his friends on his cell phone.Always
needs to be surrounded by peopel and is very intuitive, has tingling
down his arm to fingers.
He's deffinately a Phos. I asked him questions and he answered yes
to all when I was referring to the mentals of Phos.
If you tell him you have a tumor, he swears he has it - he'll go to
the internet and look it up. He'll take his blood pressure which is
normal 100 times a day to make sure.
If anyone has Murphy's Keynotes, he is the identical picture of Phos.
It's just this thing with the Vertigo and fear of disease to the
point of obsessing over it that's not going away.
IS PHOS REALLY ALL LIKE THAT!!!
He's deffinately not balanced.
maybe he needs a stronger dose than the LM's I'm giving him.
I'd appreciate any input on anyone that uses LM's.
It's easier to give him LM's everyday because he drinks beeer. NOT
alot but he drinks it.
Like I said I tried Carc in between and even went to Ars and he's
NOT an Ars at all. His mentals are a Phos.
Trust me if you talked to him, you'd not forget it :o)
they are wonderful people BUT he can get veryyyyyy depressed which
is the dark side of Phos.
Shannon I think a couple of years ago you sent something over this
list about Phos and I copied it all down. have used it on various
occasions.
Thanks, Emily

Hi Emily,
There are other remedies that can "look like phos"... Med comes to
mind as a possibility? Med can be very like that too; or possibly just
as an "intercurrent"?
200 or 1M? Maybe a single dose in water, for gentleness? In what
you've written I don't see anything that would go against using a high
potency, and drinking a little beer shouldn't interfere in any way at
all; at least not that I've ever heard. If that doesn't do it either,
then you could consider other remedy ideas?
Best,
Shannon

I was interested in the 'bragging about his friends' - maybe Hydrogen
- when everything is out of balance, very spacy and lightheaded, hence
the vertigo, their identity is so confused that their life is in
jeopardy. Interestingly there is a feeling of being dirty (= illness,
scratching at a small spot, trying to rid the body of disease, also
part of the confusion). Hyper and speedy is often an overwhelming need,
very anxious and depressed to the point of paranoia and this can take
the form of being anxious about their health because this is on a par
with the validity of their existence.

Love cold things, very conscious of heart beat, palpitations, numbness
and tingling in arms.

Maybe a possibility? Best wishes, Joy

A few Remedy Ideas:

===
ARG-N
--Vithoulkas/Morrison used to say that a rx between Phos and Ars was Arg-n
(great fear of disease, big vertigo rx)

Cornelia Boedler -- Argentum nitricum is mentally overactive and impulsive,
tending to compulsive checking of unwanted impulses and developing fixed
ideas and superstitions. Impulses may even prompt to suicide or homicide,
while arousing anxiety and feelings of regret. There are phobic reactions in
regard to bridges, open spaces, small spaces, and heights; the patient is
haunted by hypochondriacal fears of diseases and of accidents. Physical
symptoms appear to worsen as attention is paid to them anxiously. Overall,
the patient appears sympathetic and is open to suggestion.

Hering-- Arg-n --Melancholic, constantly complains of vertigo.

Aurum m-n (see below)

BORAX (a natrium remedy)

CHIN-P (vivid imagination plus fear of disease)

COFF-- hyperactive, chews ice (facial neuralgia) (see below)
==
CYCL.
LINKS 95 Two women patients, however, presented a side of Cyclamen I was
not familiar with; hyperventilation, anxiety about health, fear of suddenly
dying. In neither case could I find the precise starting moment, such as a
trauma, or the death of someone before their eyes. Both were very concerned
about their health in general, and any mention of disease in another was
enough to panic: "maybe I have the same thing. Maybe I have cancer". One
woman had fear of heart attack, and was always counting her pulse. The other
had fear of apoplexy ("something clicks in my head.") Both women scarcely
dared to leave the house for fear of panic attacks, fear of fainting, or
worse falling down dead on the spot. During a panic attack they would both
become dizzy and the vision would blur. One woman complained of seeing
"shiny tadpoles", the other of seeing flashes, coloured spots. This often
(not always) ended in a headache. On walking outside "everything seemed to
wobble", and there was a desire to hold something for support. A slight
touch was enough for reassurance, for instance touching walls occasionally
while walking outside, causing them to circle a town square instead of going
across. Whereas dizziness and blurred vision could come on by walking
unsupported outside, it could be especially alleviated by the slight touch
of the partner walking beside them. It seemed as though this was enough to
"ground" them. Both described their marriages as "very stable", "a strong
bond". The husbands came to the consultations, although they had to miss
work for this. They both said that their first thought during a panic attack
was: "where is my husband?" One woman proudly reported that people often
commented on her relationship although she and her husband had been together
for nearly eight years, people thought them as lovely dovey as an infatuated
couple in the throes of new love. She beamed, and turned her head coyly on
saying "We do everything together, I can't live without him. If he died, I
would die too." She would be free of complaints when they were on vacation,
spending every moment together. The complaints would return when they both
went back to their jobs. Her husband often had to stay at home to keep her
calm.

--GAERTNER-- bowel nosode related to phos

--GELS -- worry about heart, nervous vertigo, hypchondriasis

--GRANATUM- if history of worm complaints

if he is med and clairvoyant; vertigo, phos doesnt work,):

Medorrhinum is poorly fleshed out in repertories. But usually is a hot pt

Med: Sankaran
The fear of being exposed in Medorrhinum is seen in its fears and anxieties.
The person is clairvoyant and fears misfortune, always anticipating that
something will happen. He has a presentiment of it, an internal feeling, an
inexplicable sensation inside. He prophesizes disagreeable events.

Ankle swelling. Rheumatism feet & ankles.

Psorinum Sankaran
Psorinum is a man who has tried to climb a mountain but, somewhere along the
way, is stuck and can neither go up nor down, both being too risky. He is
scared to move. Here an element of tremendous fear is involved. Fear with
despair. It is not only that he doubts his capacity but he is scared of the
mountain itself. It is rather the feeling of danger from outside than a
sense of incapacity inside. This fear comes out of a situation in which he
finds himself when he hasn't really assessed the risks involved. For
example, while Sulph is very optimistic and thinks he is great, he can do
anything, and Tub has a strong desire for travel and adventure, Psor will
get into adventures where he reaches a particular point from which it is
very difficult to move forward. Sulphur and Tub are complementary to Psor.
I remember an occasion where I had gone to the Himalayas with a friend.
We saw a mountain almost unclimbed and we were thirsty for an adventure. So
we started climbing. it was a steep mountain without a path. We reached a
particular point about half way up where it became almost impossible to
climb further.
When we looked back, there was no way, not even traces of our footsteps
to go down. That was a near death experience. I was almost hanging, holding
on to the branch of a tree, with the support of only one foot. At that
particular time in my life, I felt totally hopeless. I had a strong fear
that this was the last moment of my life and if that was so, why prolong it!
So on one side there was total despair, a feeling that it was better to
leave the branch and let go of life - a totally pessimistic approach - and
on the other hand, there was a great irresolution, anticipation and
foreboding. Although I had a friend with me, I felt totally abandoned. It
started raining and my restlessness increased. Finally, I found a way out by
trying very hard and moving inch by inch. I think I was in a Psor state at
that time. The rubrics are:
Despair
Fear of disaster
Fear of misfortune
Irresolution
Ailments from Anticipation
Anxiety, foreboding
Hopelessness
Pessimistic
Forsaken feeling
Estranged feeling
Restlessness agg. during storm
Anxiety riding downhill.
The idea of Psor is that he has reached a very risky point in life, in
health, in business, etc. There is nervous foreboding, despair and the fear
of disaster.
The rubric 'Despair of recovery during convalescence' means that there
is danger right up to the last step. He has suffered from such a dangerous
illness that he cannot afford to have even the slightest hope. So he has
despair until he recovers totally.

In plant remedies,COFFEA is an idea that does not show up in the rep but has
neuralgia better chewing ice, intense vertigo, hypochondriacal states. He
seems erethritic (nervous, in motion) (Zinc) -- coffea is very much that
way.

Sleep restless to insomnia with great excitement of fancy; vivacity of
the mind and body; vivid, long - continuing dreams; very profound, quiet
sleep.
Mental mood: inclined to sentimentality and ecstasis; irritable; angry,
sorrowful, anxious and fearful.

Coffea is venerative and could appear like a phos type.

M Justice.
"Natrum muriaticum switches the need for justice in Aurum to the

quickly form a definite opinion about somebody. With Natrum muriaticum, such
an opinion is usually correct, but not with this remedy." [Vrijlandt]
M Reserved.
"Similarity with Phos., a remedy that also has a tendency to the
formation of fibromas. However, where Phos. is open and warm, Aur-m-n. has
no trace of this characteristic. The similarity involves the refinement,
sensitivity, receptivity, and even the charisma, but that is where the
similarity ends, because the openness and the strong contactual qualities of
Phos. are lacking. On the contrary, Aur-m-n. is sooner reserved, diffident
and closed during initial contact." [Vithoulkas]

"Aurum muriaticum natronatum is very close to Aurum muriaticum, with the
difference being that Aurum-mur-natr. is harder and more aggressive on all
levels. Mentally it is not as open and sympathetic as Aurum muriaticum, it
is rather more introverted and the element of anger is more pronounced."

Re: Obsessed about disease

Post by muthu kumar »

In hypochondriasis you will rarely tackle the symptoms by chasing
each individual manifestation, at least that is my experience. You
think you knocked it down in one place before it sprouts in
another...Hypochondriasis is the symptom - all of the ones related
will go under it so do not individually consider them in your
analysis...

Lock it down to any definite, proven physical problems. See if
there are any strong modalities in any of the "real" problems of the
past. See if you can get any idea of past diseases of childhood -
before all of this started- and work from there.Otherwise it will be
just chasing a will-of-the-wisp....

Is there a particular time when all of this started?

Yes that's what I've been doing chasing a will of the wisp.

AH sent me some great rubrics - thank you very much -
I'll look over them and see.

Seems like right now as of yesterday he is nuts with the obsession
of things wrong with him from hemorrhoids to pressing on his back to
seeing if there's something there, you name it -- this guy hears
someone talk of how they have this pain or that and he swears he has
it and checks on the internet to see what it is then he has to call
people to find out if they've experience it so he can get relief in
his head that he does NOT have it.
He seems to be worse like I said so hopefully that's return of old
symptoms with the Phos and it's kicking some disease out.
I'll have to see how he is in a day or so IF this exaggeration
passes.
Nerves are his worse enemy. Stomach twitches, nervous cough, I feel
the vertigo is caused from nerves.
So I think NEVEROUS would be a big thing to focus on.
Nothing big on childhood diseases other than colds.
No headaches that are unusual.
It all started with the death of our Nephew that he was close to, he
drank allot and was depressed for a year. Since then all this.
Thanks for all your help
